Over the weekend we learned of a West Oakland man who attempted to join ISIS, and was indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly creating social media accounts for the terrorist organization and meeting with undercover agents to plot an attack. Now prosecutors have released audio and text messages from the suspect, 22-year-old Amer Sinan Al Haggagi, that they say show he was planning several attacks here in the Bay Area — some of which hit close to home in more ways than one.

According to KQED, Al Haggagi is alleged to have planned to set brush fires in the Berkeley Hills, sell cocaine laced with strychnine in SF clubs, and plot Pulse nightclub-style attacks in which he’d intended to plant packs of explosives at local gay bars.

“I live close to San Francisco. That’s like the gay capitol [sic] of the world. I’m going to handle them right. LOL,” Al Haggagi allegedly to texted to an undercover federal agent, thinking he was communicating with domestic ISIS terrorists. “‘I’m going to place a bomb in a gay club. … I’m going to tear up the city. … The whole Bay Area is going to be up in flames. My ideas are genius. LMAO.”

Al Haggagi originally caught the attention of federal agents with the far less drastic crime of stealing $5,000 in clothing via credit card fraud. But prosecutors say the fraud and the terrorism are linked, as Al Haggagi allegedly told FBI agents he had the means “to make the cards and checks,” and that “I’m trying to make bombs. I’m going to need funds.”

“He wanted to plan to start a huge fire in an area near where he lived and he specifically mentioned the Berkeley hills as a potential target,” assistant U.S. attorney Waqar Hasib said at recently revealed hearing in December. “That was our first indication that we were dealing with someone in the Bay Area.”

Al Haggagi is also alleged to have planned to sell cocaine laced with the rodent poison strychnine, and had applied to work at the Oakland Police Department with the goal of stealing their weapons.

His defenders argue that the then-21-year-old Al Haggagi was just being a deplorable teen with a big mouth, and had no concrete intention of ever doing any of this. “There is a bit of a disconnect between Mr. Al Haggagi’s words and his actions,” his previous attorney Hanni Fakhoury said in recently disclosed court arguments. Fakhoury did not dispute the validity of the messages, but referred to them as simply “very stupid and very inappropriate and very disturbing puffery.”

Al Haggagi’s current attorney Mary McNamara also points out that her client dropped all communications with the undercover agents, and months passed without him following through on any of these plans.

“What is clear from that hearing is that Mr. Al Haggagi ran away when he believed that things had gone beyond talk with the undercover agent,” she told KQED. “Mr. Al Haggagi never re-engaged with him and never took any steps to commit any violent act. Unlike most of the cases charged under this statute, Mr. Al Haggagi is not radicalized, is not a supporter of ISIS or any terrorist network. He is a peaceful, sociable and well-liked person. He is also young and naïve. It appears that he allowed himself to be drawn into conversations that he should have been far more suspicious of.”

One day following the Republicans' scary shoutfest in Cleveland, Democratic Party nominee Hillary Clinton made an unannounced visit to Orlando for a private meeting with the families of victims of the June 12 shooting there, and made a trip Friday to Pulse nightclub where it took place to speak with first responders and pay her respects. The mass shooting was the deadliest in modern US history, and the largest massacre of LGBT people here as well.

The New Civil Rights movement reported on the solemn meeting with the families and select journalists Friday morning, which those invited were asked not to publicize ahead of time. The meeting also included a roundtable discussion with Orlando community leaders, and according to Tamara Keith of NPR it had Clinton doing "lots of listening."

Clinton then proceeded this afternoon to the site of the shooting itself, which claimed the lives of 49 people, many of them gay men who frequented the Latin-themed dance club on Saturday nights. The club and the fencing that now surrounds it have become a large memorial to the victims, and Clinton laid a bouquet of white roses there.

While not trying to politicize the tragedy, the move can certainly be seen as Clinton showing her support for and sympathy with the LGBT community in the wake of the close of the RNC and the virulently anti-equality platform the GOP decided to adopt this election year.

Coincidentally, Clinton was in Orlando just as another deadly mass shooting was taking place in Munich, Germany, about which Clinton tweeted as she was boarding her jet for an event in Tampa.

Clinton is also expected to announce her running mate today or tomorrow, and the top contender right now appears to be Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia.

I guess some ISIS supporters are ignoring credible reports that Orlando shooter Omar Mateen was probably gay and mentally ill and wasn't really religious at all and are trying to claim him as one of their own. In a new, essentially empty threat video from ISIS/ISIL recruiters, partly in Arabic but featuring other languages as well, including French, images of the aftermath of the shooting and of Mateen are juxtaposed with images of soft targets like the Las Vegas strip, and random cell phone video that tourists took on the Golden Gate Bridge and on the Powell Street cable car. (Fast forward all the way to the last minute of the video above.)

As CBS 5 translates, part of the footage is accompanied by one of the armed men in the video saying, "Arise, o Muslims and kill the unbelievers in their own homes."

The station speaks with its own "security analyst" who tries to draw some connection between the video's release and this past weekend's Pride celebrations, but that doesn't appear to supported in the video itself.

Also, as the Chronicle reports, the French-speaking man in the video refers to Mateen as one of "my brothers," and says, "You have pleased our hearts, you have pleased the hearts of Muslims," adding something about ignoring all "hate from the hypocrites of the Muslim community."

The SFPD and the FBI say that there are no credible threats against the Bay Area, but of course as we've learned over the last eight months, law enforcement is not likely to have any warning of lone-wolf type attacks like the one in San Bernardino, or coordinated suicide attacks like the ones in Paris. Still, FBI spokesperson Prentice Danner tells the paper, "We are aware of the video. We can’t confirm its validity. We’re not aware of any credible threat."

Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, who sits on the U.S. Homeland Security Committee and who is running against CA Attorney General Kamala Harris for Barbara Boxer's Senate seat in the fall, reminds us that threats against the Bay Area have basically come on the regular since September 11. "Let me tell you something about the Bay Area and California: we’ve never been spared," she tells CBS 5. "We’ve had just really good intelligence and people working every day to keep us safe."

Not sure that that's any comfort...

Hopefully some more graphic gay sex stories like this one will emerge about Mateen so these ISIS fools will stop wanting to claim him as their own and hold him up as a hero.

The most disturbing aspect of tonight’s Frameline documentary about “ the largest gay mass murder in US history” is that it’s no longer about the largest gay mass murder in US history. The documentary Upstairs Inferno, the gut-wrenching tale of a brutal 1973 New Orleans gay bar attack that took the lives of 32 people and screening at the Victoria tonight, gives horrible, powerful and poignant insights into what it’s like to be stuck in the middle of the a homicidal massacre of an LGBT nightclub.

The survivors of this month’s grisly Pulse nightclub shooting are not yet ready to write their tell-all books, or appear in documentaries. Ostensibly, some of them someday will. But many of the survivors of the UpStairs Lounge arson attack do appear in Upstairs Inferno to share the harrowing, tiny details of being trapped inside a gay safe space that’s under siege specifically because it is a gay safe space: the sounds of the screams, the jumping out of second story windows, the heroic (and often fatal) attempts to go back and save lovers or friends. And in an awful Orlando parallel, the attack was committed by closeted gay man struggling with his own identity.

“The term ‘hate crime’ did not exist at the time of the fire,” the film’s director Robert L. Camina told SFist. “Some people say that self-hatred was a contributing motive. Others look back at the way the gay community was treated in the wake of the fire and the deafening silence of religious and government leaders was the real hate crime.”

Image: 'Upstairs Inferno'

Indeed, the New Orleans police chief put out a statement at the time calling the victims “thieves, murderers and queers” according to one person interviewed in the film. This is not exactly the kind of outpouring of support we saw for the Orlando victims. Many of the UpStairs victims’ families flatly refused to claim their bodies or hold funerals.

“Communities across the country and world are holding vigils and standing in solidarity with Orlando,” Camina said. “That didn't happen in 1973. Over $5.6 million dollars have been raised for Pulse victims through a GoFundMe account. In the aftermath of the UpStairs Lounge arson, only $17,900 was raised through the National New Orleans Memorial Fund. Adjusted for inflation, that equals $96,951.90. That's a huge difference.”

Image: 'Upstairs Inferno'

Tonight’s Frameline screening is on the eve of the 43-year anniversary of the arson, and some of the victims’ families will be on hand for the Q&A. The film is also screening tomorrow at New Orleans Pride, as it did last year on the 42-year anniversary.

UPSTAIRS INFERNO - Trailer 1 [HD] (www.UpstairsInferno.com) from Camina Entertainment on Vimeo.

“The audience was full of survivors, friends, family members of victims and witnesses,” Camina said. “Many traveled across the country to attend the screening. Never before, have so many people affected by the fire been in the same room.”

That was significant, but that was before the Pulse massacre replaced the UpStairs massacre as the US’ deadliest gay mass murder. “No one wanted to pass that moniker on and see a horror of this nature again,” Camina admitted. “Whether bullets or arson, this is a nightmarish deja vu. It's a stark reminder that while the LGBTQ community has achieved a lot in its fight for equality, there are many people who still feel that LGBTQ lives are expendable.”

'Upstairs Inferno' plays tonight at the Victoria Theatre at 9:30 p.m., with the director and victims’ family members in attendance. Get tickets here.

The Mission's an interesting place to screen a movie about gentrification, filmed from the eyes of the gentrifier -- so there was certainly no shortage of things to think about at last night's showing of for DocFest at the Roxie.

New Urban Cowboy is a documentary about Michael Arth, a kind of hippie-dippie former resident of Santa Barbara who moves to the small town of Deland, Florida, near Orlando, and more or less single-handedly beautifies a decrepit drug-laden area formerly known as "Cracktown" into "the Historic DeLand Garden District," in accordance with his philosophies on urban planning and home design.

Arth, though sweet, is kind of a weird dude, he seems extremely difficult to live with, and we must admit the house designs weren't really quite our cup of tea (they seemed kind of twee). But there's no denying that Arth did a great thing for the town of DeLand -- after he moved in and painstakingly bought and renovated what ultimately totaled around 20 plots of land in Cracktown, the crime rate in town dropped by 10 percent, property values skyrocketed, and civic pride bloomed.

But, as Arth himself admits, the drug dealers just moved to other parts of town and the homelessness problem near the neighborhood continued. We found ourselves wondering, despite ourselves, about what the rest of DeLand looked like, and not just the ye olde quainte historic village of the Garden District, and what their social services system looked like. Hey, you show a movie in San Francisco District 6, this is what we're going to think about!

Week 02
The Battle Of Overcoming

STL has been hit hard by the injury bug. Their players've been dropping by the wayside as quickly as our government's rationales for the Iraq war! The Rams already lost their best player, all-world offensive line cornerstone Orlando Pace, for the year with a shoulder injury. WR Torry Holt's knee is bothering him, OLB Pisa Tinoisamoa's ankle is tweaked, WR Issac Bruce is old, and CB Tye Hill just broke a bone in his back during practice. Broke his back. Yiii.

Needless to say, this is a team that the even the sluggish 49er team from the first three-quarters of the week 1 game against Arizona might match up favorable against. The Rams will only be dressing three cornerbacks for this game fer-pete's-sake!

But here's where things become even darker for the Rams' chances: RB Frank Gore's mother Liz passed away this week. She was the guiding light in his life, and the strong matriarch of his family. Knowing Frank's ferocious drive to do his best on the field for sake of his team and his family and those who believe in him, we fear for those who dare to stand in his path this Sunday.

Next up on your American Football Spectacular: The Oakland Raiders go to the mile-high city of Denver where a most-evil blocking scheme lurks, built to break men's hearts, knees, and fantasy teams...

Baby Bull Busted

Beloved Giant Orlanda Cepeda got busted today for drugs...

SF News

baby

baseball

crime

dogs

drugs

Marijuana

News+Sports

Orlando

police

Bay Area Sports

T Park

the police

Jon

The Baby Bull and the man who gave us AT&T Park's ChaCha Bowl has had drug problems throughout his career, even spending some time in the slammer in 1975 for trafficking marijuana.
According to society scribe Catherine Bigelow (who's BLOGGING!!! now -- yay!), Orlando Bloom gave a very moving keynote address about saving power in small ways (unplugging your cell phone charger, for instance).

And -- for those of you who prefer the provincial nature of our Swells celebrity set to the big-time glam of Hollywood, fret not: your usual C-Big crowd was there as well: Summer Tompkins Walker, Vanessa Getty, and Mayor G-New himself. No word on whether Vanessa Getty spoke to Gavin or not. (We're guessing not.) Week 12
The Battle Of Momentum

Wow, after beating the Seahawks last weekend, the Niners are riding a wave of hope unseen in these parts since the surprises of the Mooch era. Three game winning streak! Wow. The defense has simplified and held together. The offense has minimized mistakes and they hit the opposition directly in the mouth with power running.

Head Coach Nolan II's master plan to turn the 49ers into the West Coast Ravens appears to be a year ahead of schedule. The Niners are beating teams with more talent then themselves, and are no longer laughingstocks. Fans are upbeat, and despite the stadium crap, right now it feels pretty good to be among the 49er Faithful.

This week to St. Louis go the Niners, where the Rams have come apart as thoroughly as succulent turkey falls off the bone.

Despite a bunch of impressive "skill players" preexisting on their offense, the Rams can't get it together with their regime change. Their new offensive scheme is sputtering behind a dinged-up o-line. STL LT Orlando Pace, one of the NFL's best, is lost for the season with a triceps injury.
By SFist Christopher Rogers for "American Football Spectacular," contributing

Bay Area Blog Round-Up

We were going to blame our missed post on <strike>Hurricane</strike>, <strike>Tropical Storm</strike>, Summer Shower ...

Arts & Entertainment

blogs

convention

convention center

hurricane

Orlando

poverty

Santa

Santa Cruz

sf

Storm

strike

Summer

this week

jacob

We were going to blame our missed post on <strike>Hurricane</strike>, <strike>Tropical Storm</strike>, Summer Shower Albert, but you see how that went, so we have to level with you. We were in Orlando last week on business, holed up in another convention center, this time without a laptop. We were supposed to be sharing one with someone from work, but if you've ever had to do that, or if you've ever had siblings, you know how well the sharing thing goes with something as valuable as that. ˙In any event, this absence meant that when we went to visit all our lovely SF blogs, well. . . there were quite a few. So, in the spirit of misanthropy towards all of blogdom and its never-ending torrent of text, our first link this week will be to le blog exuberance. Then, after we've ended poverty, we'll need somewhere to go to unwind. May we suggest the Santa Cruz mountains? And then, rested and refreshed, we're back into blogging.

Make a birthday cake for Elvis! Decorate the best gingerbread house! Who can make the tallest ice/pastry sculpture? So we can't wait for Food Network's coverage of the mothership of food contesting -- the biennial $1,000,000 Pillsbury Bake-Off.

So Pillsbury picks 100 contestants every two years, to compete in categories like "Wake Up To Breakfast," and "Brand New You" (healthful recipes), and "Dinner Made Simple," among others. The recipes must include at least two designated Pillsbury products, such as Yoplait, El Paso salsa, and Pop-Secret popcorn, among many others. One lucky winner walks away with a million dollars; and other $10,000 prizes will be awarded, including most dairy, and best Latino-influenced.

The Bay Area has traditionally done pretty well in the bake-off -- the most famous bake-off winner was the Tunnel of Fudge chocolate bundt cake, made by a San Franciscan, and the first male winner of the contest was from Redwood City (with a macadamia torte). This year, the Bay Area's sending six representatives, including a very pregnant Mountain View cook (making spinach wonton crisps), a 48-year-old San Francisco male painter who's been entering the bakeoff since he was 10 (deviled crab and cheese rolls), and acclaimed food contestor Roxanne Chan from Albany, with a tomato-corn recipe.
The bakeoff takes place from March 19-22 in Orlando, Florida. Go Bay Area cooks! - Have the best record of any California basketball team since the All-Star break (and yep, that includes the LA Kobe's)
In another blow to an already failed relationship, Disney has begun ramping up production for Toy Story 3 at their new digital production facilities in Glendale -- meaning that it isn't likely Pixar will ever work with them again after their distribution deal expires next year. As Defamer so diplomatically puts it: "That's right, Steve Jobs, Eisner doesn't need you and your hit-making studio, so feel free to sign up with a rival and make huge piles of cash."

Pixar, located on Hollis Avenue in Emeryville, has been on a rather fantastic run of hits, from the first Toy Story through the current king of the box office, The Incredibles. Disney, on the other hand, hasn't had a hit animated feature since The Lion King, and in fact Disney's Orlando animation studios have been shuttered. Andrew Millstein, who headed those facilities, is now out trying to poach artists from other studios to stock the new Glendale facilities while Michael Eisner is in a court in Delaware. Pixar, on the other hand, is seeing its stock rise based on the success of their latest effort, and also won approval from Emeryville voters to expand their facilities.
