ART: Hayes Valley Art Coalition is celebrating the installation of Adaptations, a site specific sculpture created by San Francisco artist Mark Baugh-Sasaki, which is constructed of a steel skeleton filled with locally-sourced salvaged tree limbs. There will be food served by Marino Mexican and Seafood Restaurant and music by local Gypsy jazz trio Gaucho.
SFist Tonight
Vote and/or Buy This Lovely Property Today
The kids over at Curbed SF have the word on one polling place that's also an open house. Gross. Over in the enchanted Excelsior District, early morning voters have also been getting the hardcore sales pitch for a 6BR polling station that's going for $888,888. Not a bad price, btw, but still. Anyway, check it: "Went to vote this morning at 900 Persia Street in the lovely Excelsior District. Not only is it a...
Listing of the Week: 401 Marietta Drive (Miraloma Park)
We were out for a leisurely weekend walk up to Tower Market from our abode in the Sunnyside. Instead of heading straight up Teresita, we decided to do something a little different and detour onto Marietta Drive. ‘Tis true, we live life on the edge.
Like Tamagotchi For Wine Enthusiasts
Have you heard of Crushpad? It's a relatively new company whose product is akin to an adult version of one of those tamagotchi pets -- except that when you're done, instead of a weird digital monster, you have a bunch of your very own custom wine. Crushpad operates out of a 34,000-square foot facility in the Dogpatch--a facility that you can see on Saturday, as the company is holding an open house from 2 p.m.-6 p.m.
There Ain't No Party Like a Pelosi Party
If the sun is shining a bit brighter and the birds are chirping a bit chirpier it could only be because today is a big day-- as of this posting, our little Nancy is officially now the Queen. In fact, her little "First 100 Hours" plan is now on the clock. How excited is she? She's been throwing herself four days of parties in celebration of it, all to be later shown in an episode of C-Span's "My Sweet Inauguration Party." In a stab at snarkiness, the NY Times even refered to it all as a "Pelosi-Palooza." And the fact some of those parties could raise a little money for her and her party, well, that's just a happy little coincidence.
Across The -Ist Network
Gothamist posts on the capture of a NYC perv thanks to Little Brother and a camera phone. They also scour the city for vodka martinis and Shamrock shakes and spot the friend from the Wonder Years at a city law firm. New York police think that Littlejohn is their man.
Wednesdays, The New Wednesdays
Wednesdays -- you're on notice! Go check out a free concert at that church across the street from the Metreon at 12:30 p.m. -- Bach cantatas by Jonathan Dimmick on the organ. Or celebrate the life of Nobel Laureate Saul Bellow (1915-2005) at a literary conversation at the Jewish Community Center at 8 p.m, hosted by Michael Krasny.
Thursday: Feeling a little sniffly as you gallivant up and down Valencia Street? Well, stop by the Scarlet Sage Herb Co. on Valencia between 22nd and 23rd on Thursday night at 7 p.m. and learn how to treat common ailments with aromatherapy. $10 prepayment to reserve your spot; call 821-0997.
and Friday: Our favorite Southern Exposure is hosting an opening reception for Mayhem, its annual exhibition of local contemporary artists. The "Mayhem" theme was chosen to encourage artists to respond to our current socio-political climate, so you know it's gonna be provocative! Reception starts at 7, at 401 Alabama Street. Or if SoEX inspires to create your own art, get across town and check out the Craft Gym open house -- come celebrate Craft Gym's first year of public crafting space at a Craft Corner Deathmatch-style Craft-Off contest. 6-9 at 1452 Bush (cross Van Ness).
Last Week in SFist
Ah, Muni. How you offend us, let us count the ways. There's your misguided ideas on how to crack down on face evasion. There's the service delays. And who can forget Gavin's nomination of a completely inexpereinced guy to the MTA board? But it's not all bad -- there's the kinda cute Dockers ad and the streetcar open house. Our verdict: Streetcars rule, and the rest of Muni blows.
Stuff To Do If You're Bored
Saturday, there's the Canvas Gallery 5th Anniversary Party. $10 gets you in any time between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. for food and drink specials, live music, and the chance to rub shoulders with real live artists.
Greetings!
Hello friends! There has been a little brouhaha today about some changing of the guard and you can see the proof is in the pudding. Jackson has outed himself on SF.Metblogs as the money grubbing corporate whore he is and in all honesty, that's why we love him so much. He's also well armed so give a wide berth until all this has a chance to settle down. I just wanted to let you all know that we'll be taking good care of things in the future and as soon as we get moved into our new offices, yes bloggers can have offices, we'll be having a huge open house to ring in the new era of local blogging and brotherhood. More on you ex-sister site LAist.
First Third Friday At Ross's Office
We're a little jealous of District Five. How come they get cool supervisors that open up their offices to the public, put art on the walls, and dispense wine and snacks? We'd like to suggest to Sophie Maxwell that maybe an occassional open house could do wonders for her public image in District Ten. Either that, or maybe start a blog that allows comments. At least the light in her office was on past five -- Elsbernd and McGoldrick's doors were dark. We just hope they weren't off hanging out with downtown business interests.
Namaste
You might think that SFist sits in front of the computer all day long, and you wouldn't be too far from the truth. But you'd be a little far. Any look at our staff photos will make it clear to you that we're all more than a bunch of Comic Book Guys hunched in front of out glowing monitors. We all get out there and get some kind of exercise - and since we live in Northern California, that exercise frequently involves yoga.
