Starved as we are for celebrity sightings that don't involve Mark Zuckerberg or Robin Williams, we bring your attention this a.m. to the very important news that Ryan Gosling was in San Francisco last night. In fact he may not have checked out of his hotel yet, or he may be here for more than one day.

Gosling has been keeping a very low profile lately, but he was at the Tuesday night screening of a movie he's producing, White Shadow, which first premiered at Sundance this year and got a Grand Jury Prize nomination. It's directed by Noaz Deshe and it's the story of an albino boy in Tanzania, not quite a teenager, who's being hunted by witch doctors who want to chop him up for his prized albino body parts.

After the screening, which was at the Sundance Kabuki, he managed to score a table at State Bird Provisions because celebs can do that, and it looks like he may have been dining there with director Deshe.

The photo comes via the cellphone of the uncle of Twitterer Camille Ruvalcaba. But somehow Beth Spotswood heard the news last night, because she's that tied to the pulse, ladies and gentlemen.

Here's the red carpet photo of a scruffy, under-dressed Gosling. Because, after all, it's just the San Francisco Int'l Film Festival.

Well, unfortunately, it's because Muni isn't actually running its own list. Why not? Who knows. In fact, when we asked Muni for comment, they weren't aware that they even a mailing list.

But they do. And they've farmed it out to a Canadian Internet-mountebank company calling itself "Bravenet" that gives free online tools to gullible businesses like Muni -- tools that any junior-college programmer could create -- in exchange for customers' sweet precious delicious email addresses. And then, once Muni's supplied your email address to Bravenet, they send out ads, often directing you to sleazy sites that promise to send you a dinky laptop as soon as you sign up for huge amounts of affiliate-commissions. Lame!

So how hard would it be for Muni to avoid this slimy taint by just administering its own mailing list? In fact, it wouldn't be very hard at all. All that it requires are a little cash and competence.

Just weeks after colliding with a 90-year-old woman on the corner of 9th Avenue and Irving Street, an inbound N Judah stuck a man at 31st Avenue, dragging him to 28th, killing him in the process. Overhead news helicopters, a Judah Street closure, and a police investigation followed suit. What's more, according to the Gate:

The incident was the second Muni accident of the night. About an hour earlier, a streetcar struck a car at 44th Avenue and Taraval Street, injuring several people who were transported to San Francisco General Hospital, a Muni spokeswoman said.

The number of people hurt and the extent of their injuries had not yet been determined, she said.

Charming.

The N Judah death, which occurred a little after 9 p.m last night, "stretched several blocks and...was very bloody." Of course, this raises many questions. For example, <del>who was the victim?</del> What was he doing at the time? How in the hell did the streetcar operator not know that they had just hit someone? Did any passengers know? He was dragged? Will the N Judah please stop its current campaign of perambulator terror?

We will update you with more info as it comes to us.

Update: The Municide (TM SFist tipster) victim has been identified as 40-year-old Mark Callaghan. And--get this--it seems that the San Francisco resident was attempting to board the N-Judah train at 31st Avenue "when the doors closed...Callaghan tripped and fell...then was dragged underneath the streetcar." Jesus.

Day Around the Bay

Best SF locales for a hot beef injection. OMG! It's the Nicole Ritchie of laptops! (Ritchie before she got fat and pregnant, that is.)

It seems that the new MacBook Air, just unveiled a few hours ago, features multi-touch ability on its oversized trackpad, similar to that of the iPhone; some sort of crazy wirelessness; recyclable aluminum case; a mercury and lead free display; and you can buy the thing in two weeks, starting at around $1799. Read more about it here.

Dede, will you buy us one? Oh, come on!

Actual weather in San Francisco, complete with an omninous-looking Storm Warning flag flying above the Great Highway. That's an advisory for Beaufort wind force scale numbers of 10 or 11. Do you have any idea what that means!?

We don't either. We think it's something like "park your car near an aging Eucalyptus tree and you might regret it." Otherwise, you should be all right.

And with good reason. According to the Chronicle, it seems that "the vote count included at least one discarded ballot and improper supervision of the hand recount. The recount showed Davis finishing with 5,718 votes to Cloutier's 5,716." And CBS 5 bring up Patrick Farrell, a Vallejo resident and recount witness, who claims that during the recount "[b]allots were all over the place, on the floor, on tables, people were grabbing them from each other."

And both sides seem to be get more heated and frustrated by the day. ("He ain't nothing but a sore loser," a heckler cried out during Cloutier's news conference.) We did. For a few minutes. It seems the Gavin went on for over 100 minutes, as SFist Jim already pointed out. (Pretty people have a habit of droning on. We waste more time feigning interest in what attractive people have to say than we do standing in line or waiting at red lights.) He also thanked Carole Migden and Mark Leno for coming to hear him speak...in that order! (OMG! Read between the lines there, folks. Or not. (Oh, Gav. You so Gorey.) The address focused less on the future, and more on all of the glorious achievements we have now (biotech companies, etc.), a brief whisper of our problems (an inexcusable murder rate, etc.), and Gavin's continued fondness for icy-blue neckwear.

North Beach One of the Top Places To Call Home

It really is all about the other side of Market Street now.

SF News

Austin

Brooklyn

city life

coffee

coffee shop

Eastern Market

Market Street

neighborhoods

Old West

OMG

Park Slope

Pike Place

Pittsburgh

San Diego

Seattle

Washington

West Austin

Brock Keeling

It really is all about the other side of Market Street now.

Firings! Lies! Non-lies! It's so fucking exciting!

A few hours after our post last week about Jeff's cameras in the THC's Seneca Hotel, we caught word of some firings. OMG did we get someone canned? Well, no. As it turns out, two folks were terminated at a different property (here's the job posting for their replacements), but it wasn't related to the cameras. Whatever the real reasons are for the firings, they cannot possibly live up the wildly salacious rumors floating around about them. Alas, we can't verify any of the SHOCKING gossip, so we'll have to leave it to your fevered imaginations to speculate wildly in the comments. If there's a lesson here, it's probably that when so many of your staffers are former clients, the rumors about them are bound to have a messy foundation.

So what's going on with the cameras? When last we checked in, the THC said that the city attorney told them the cameras were illegal; and then the city attorney said, "no we didn't." OMGZ! The THC are such LIARS!

Well, actually, no. It was just a case of different city lawyers giving different advice without consulting with each other. Jeff told us that the city's latest story is that his cameras ARE illegal: they are revealing the identity of welfare recipients, which is apparently against the law because God forbid taxpayers see all the drug dealing that they're paying for.

But wait. Is Jeff revealing the identity of welfare recipients? Jeff doesn't know for sure who's getting public assistance and who isn't. Only the city and the THC staff know for sure which residents are on welfare; so if anyone's revealing identities, isn't it them? What is Jeff revealing that you couldn't see from just glancing in the windows? We can point at a girl on the bus and say "I bet she's got the clap," but unless we're her doctor (we're not), the accusation is only credible if you're the kind of Gullible Gus who believes everything he hears.

Oh and PS, the THC has security cameras of their own. Of course, they don't put the footage up on YouTube ... which we think is a damn shame.

SFist Tonight

-- Wing: With album titles like Wing Sings Elvis, Wing Sings AC/DC, Dancing Queen by Wing, and Beatles Classics by Wing, i...

Arts & Entertainment

Bottom of the Hill

Cafe du Nord

Canada

City

City Hall

Du Nord

SF Events

maps

Matt Stone

Oakland

OMG

Orange County

Queen

rock band

Sanchez Streets

South Park

The Cliks

tonight

Trey Parker

USA

Brock Keeling

-- Wing: With album titles like Wing Sings Elvis, Wing Sings AC/DC, Dancing Queen by Wing, and Beatles Classics by Wing, it's easy to see why she shot to cult-icon status and became a favorite of Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who ended up using her in South Park.
