Hey -- more free ice cream! This one's not left to chance, like that whole "Dreyer's" thing. Anyone and everyone that shows up at Haagen-Dazs on May 15 between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. gets a free cone. The only caveat? It must be one of the company's special new flavors, "cinnamon dulce de leche," or "sticky toffee pudding."

Shoppers trying to enjoy the a/c at the Oakridge Mall in San Jose on Sunday afternoon got less cool air than they were hoping for when the straining mall transformer outside the movie theater blew up. Witnesses reported seeing the lights flicker, hearing a huge boom, and then seeing sparks. In light of the panic and lack of power for the mall, Oakridge threw up its hands and decided just to close for the rest of the day.
Your Commute: Bad Day
A lot going on today:
*A pedestrian by the US Mint was hit and killed by a 26 Valencia bus shortly after 9 a.m. today. Footage from the scene here. The police are looking into whether the pedestrian deliberately placed himself behind the read wheels of the bus, and the driver of the bus has been put on administrative leave.
*Two lanes of 101 S near Mountain View were closed down after four cars collided and started a vehicle fire around 8 a.m. this morning. No one was injured, but the "flames shooting from the vehicle hood" sound very dramatic. Making matters worse, a truck stalled on the San Mateo bridge around that time too.
*A senior citizen attempting suicide by lying on the train tracks was hit but not killed by a VTA train in San Jose near the Oakridge Mall at around 6 a.m. this morning. The man survived, but suffered severe head injuries.
*A 13 year old boy was accidentally struck and killed by a Caltrain yesterday afternoon, near the Broadway stop. He and his friends would often cross the tracks by Burlingame, but they weren't paying attention (possibly because a number of them were listening to music at the time) and misjudged the speed of the oncoming train. His family is lobbying for better fencing to be installed along the tracks; the conductor said he blew his horn but no one noticed.
How's your commute been today? (We feel vaguely guilty that ours was relatively uneventful.)
