But despite the win, Calamia discovered they were ineligible for the $5,000 prize money that accompanied the prestigious title, per KRON4.

The New York City Marathon became the first major marathon to offer prize money to non-binary runners in 2022. However, after competing and securing the first-place medal, Calamia never received the $5,000 prize money. They reached out to the New York Road Runners (NYRR), the marathon organizers, who said there was a rule that hadn't been followed: runners were supposed to compete in six NYRR races in the year leading up to the New York City Marathon. That stipulation had quietly posted on the marathon's website three months after their registration, according to KRON4.

Calamia said they never saw it, and couldn't have complied if they did. That "would obviously require me to live in NYC,” Calamia told KRON4. “I can't fly out there six times to go do races, so I was really surprised by this being added and really disappointed.”

Then, NYRR issued a statement in response: "Cal was not eligible for the NYRR member division, non-binary prize money as they did not complete the six fully scored races required. The prize money and eligibility requirements for the non-binary category were published on our website at the same time as all the other categories, six months before the race."

As Outsports reported, NYRR also got defensive and said that it has "supported Cal on multiple fronts for nearly a half a year in their fight for inclusion — including assisting them with acquiring pro-bono legal representation in their successful therapeutic use exemption battle. We are saddened by their inaccurate portrayal of this matter." (Calamia had to petition the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency to make sure they could compete while on masculinizing hormone therapy, per Outsports.)

Calamia was reportedly unsatisfied with the response and wanted more accountability. ”They didn't say, 'hey, it was our mistake, we should have communicated better,'" Calamia reportedly recounted.

Calamia poses after a running workout. Last time they offered these beauties, expressed overnight from the city that never sleeps, lines went around the block. Be sure to get there early. Very early. Unless you enjoy waiting in line (which you probably already do).

Anyway, the menu:

Even the rain couldn't dent people's appetite for authentic NYC bagels. Wes Rowe, who, along with his partner, Sonya Haines, overnight-expressed New York City bagels (from Russ and Daughters) for their Eastside Bagels pop-up at Dear Mom, had this say, "There has never been a pop-up here with a line like today. Next time we know what to expect and will be ready. This was the line at 11:30 when we started. It was almost to Folsom Street."

And that was just the second line. The following image shows the first line that formed prior to opening. Because people in San Francisco enjoy waiting in long lines. Behold:

In a new installment in the eternal New York City versus San Francisco comparisons, the folks behind a new app have compiled some interesting data on the habits of our fair city. The info comes from Chronos, an app that runs in the background on your phone and keeps tabs on everything you're doing so that you can make snazzy infographics about your life (nope, not creepy at all, move along folks).

In a blog post by Business Insider, Chronos compared San Franciscans and New Yorkers on sleep habits and dining and drinking practices, and found that San Franciscans are generally, weirdly just better than New Yorkers. Just kidding! But they did find that SF denizens who used their app get up earlier and head directly to the bars on weekend mornings, which we think shows a remarkable sense of poise.

In terms of sleep, San Franciscans get up and about, on the whole, earlier than New Yorkers (10% of whom don't get up on weekends until after 11am). This could be due to the portion of SF's workforce that lives by East Coast hours, or we could just be more eager to get to yoga class on time. Observe:

San Franciscans tend to spend their nights out, dive bars, "latin" places and their friend's houses figured big, while New Yorkers defaulted more to cocktail lounges and Italian food. And when it comes to weekends, we head directly to coffeeshops, bars and parks, while New Yorkers universally seem to hit restaurants hard. Maybe they don't have to wait as long for brunch as their compatriots out West.

Ever wonder what this website would look like if it were written in the 1860s? Well, first of all, it'd probably only be a weekly, and when we complained about the cost of mass transit, we'd be talking pennies a ride! Anyway, back then, more than 814,000 people were living in New York City's Manhattan, many in the slums of Five Points, with communities starting to emerge in the wilderness above 42nd Street.
Cyclists, if you've ever been harassed for riding your bike on the sidewalks -- which is forbidden, by the way -- take a moment to bathe in the warm glow of this footage that captured NYPD arresting a man for "ridiculing" a cyclist getting a ticket. Although the heckler walked away after spouting a comment toward the biker (i.e., "You're a grown man, you know better than that!"), several cops pour out of the police van "to teach the man a lesson in manners."

Makes SFPD look downright tame by comparison, doesn't it?

In the end, the passerby was reportedly charged with harassment, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Some buildings were evacuated while others told employees they were staying put—and then the FAA explained "the Defense Department is conducting a photo op that involves deploying two F-16s and escorting a Boeing 747 in the vicinity of Lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty... the maneuver was not an emergency and was coordinated in advance with the FAA and state and local officials." (The Boening 747 was one of the planes that the President uses, but President Obama was not on board.) Of course, the warning from NYC government came right at the same time as the maneuver, not in advance, because the feds apparently didn't want the flight to be disclosed.
In yet another close call with pederasty (thanks, Joel!), KGO sees tragedy befall another radio hosts. If you recall, news reporter George Weber was found dead in his NYC apartment with a stab wound to his neck. According to NY Daily News and NY Post, a 16-year-old male confessed to killing former WABC reporter. It seems the teen (who is certifiably insane and down with Satan) answered a sex ad on Craigslist posted by Weber. A police source claims, "He saw the victim's ad looking for violent sex and said 'I can smother somebody for $60' but it got out of hand."

Gothamist posts on the final, graphic encounter between the boy and Weber.

"The two met in Brooklyn early Friday evening and then returned to the newsman's Carroll Gardens brownstone apartment under the premise of engaging in sadomasochistic acts." The teen couldn't remember how many times he stabbed Weber (whose legs and hands were bound with duct tape) because he had been on drugs. The Post says it was grisly—he apparently stabbed Weber so many times "it was difficult to get an accurate count by the time the body was discovered two days ago."

The teen was since been taken into custody.

New Yorkers Protest Prop 8, Connecticut Begins Gay Marriage

Last night, hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people gathered for a protest outside the Church of Latter Day Saints'...

SF News

gay

lesbian

marriage

New York

New York City

NYC

prop 8

proposition 8

same sex

Brock Keeling

Last night, hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people gathered for a protest outside the Church of Latter Day Saints' Manhattan Mormon Temple and march down Broadway to Columbus Circle.

The planned and peaceful event shut down many streets, drew many cops to the area as the march winded through streets with spirited chants.

Earlier on Wednesday and not too far from New York City, gay marriage legally began in Connecticut to which one Gothamist commenter asked "Shouldn't New Yorkers be celebrating what happened in Connecticut today rather than protesting something in a state we have nothing to do with? Not only that, but NY itself will likely legalize gay marriage soon."

Earlier this summer, New York Governor Paterson issued a memo telling all state agencies to recognize legally performed, out-of-state same-sex marriages as valid marriages even though the state does not license or perform said marriages. The memo was based on a February 2008 Appellate Court ruling that said gay marriages "should be afforded the same recognition as any other legally performed union."

Our parent site, Gothamist, tells us that "WNBC reports that the letters, which arrived today, included a photo of the Army recruiting center 'before it was bombed and...the words 'We did it.'" Which group is claiming responsibility, exactly, remains to be known.

According to the AP, Senator Dianne Feinstein's office sent the following email to other lawmakers:

"A few offices on the House side have received a letter today addressed to 'Members of Congress' with a picture of a man standing in front of the Times Square recruiting station that was bombed in New York today with the statement 'We did it.' He is standing in front of it with his arms spread out and he's attached his political manifesto."

The email, according to Gothamist, also advised people not to open the letters and contact the police.

Today's Times Square attack caused minimal damage to a "New York military recruiting station before dawn Thursday and police were searching for a hooded bicyclist seen on a surveillance video pedaling away," according to CBS. Although the blast was minor, it could have caused "injury and even death."

Week Around the -Ists

Phillyist explored an impending implosion and lived to tell the tale.

Gothamist marveled at the city's new NYC-branded condom campaign - especially the use of a Toronto landmark in the advertising. (Also, fun fact: Gothamist turned five years old yesterday.)

Tired of the worldwide Scientology protests? Torontoist totally isn't: they covered the big downtown protest the day it happened, and followed up with an examination of all of the protests' legality, according to hate crime laws, a few days later.

LAist also got into the fray outside the "Anonymous" Scientology protests, netting a killer photo essay and some on-site video of the vociferous crew in their masks.

And would you look at that: SFist covered last Sunday's thetan hatefest too.

According to Seattlest, area travel author Rick Steves and the Washington state ACLU want to talk to you about legalizing pot.

DCist took a good look at the results of the "Potomac Primary" and put together an interactive map that shows the breakdown of exactly why Washington, D.C. is Obama Country.

Speaking of which, Austinist reported on Mayor Will Wynn (heh) endorsing Barack Obama.

Chicagoist continues to be obsessed with all odd Obama accessories,
like these
fly one-of-a-kind, hand-painted kicks.

And in non-Obama/Scientology-free news, Bostonist met with one of the wine world's biggest renegades, Gary Vaynerchuk, host of the Wine Library TV podcast.

Obviously, at first, they got lost in the mix, but promised themselves that if they didn't have a record deal by June, then they would forget about their rock star dreams. Lucky for them, just as time was about to run out, they got their golden ticket and officially became, Until June.

Matt White, from New York via New Jersey, is ready to be a household name. Several of his songs have been featured on TV shows, most notably "One Tree Hill." He has a dream of collaborating with Bruce Springsteen and earned a Political Science degree. He couldn't give up his passion for music so he continued playing as a street performer in NYC. Finally, he was "found" and now he has a record deal and debut album under his belt.

Melee, pictured above, opened for Matt Nathanson back in November. Their music ventures into rock but it still has a strong pop sensibility to it. A Warped Tour favorite, these O.C. natives have become a huge hit, even in Japan! Make sure you are on time and ready to go when the doors open at 7:30pm (that's a much earlier time than last week's popscene event). The show starts at 8:30pm. If you don't win tickets, they are only $13.00 - only $4.33 for each band - not a bad deal!

Contest will run until Friday morning, when one person will win two spots on the guest list to Friday night's concert. Be sure to check your email Friday morning. Good luck!
