Supporters of San Francisco's right to get naked in public could show up at City Hall today when the Board of Supervisors give their final vote on the city's controversial nudity ban. On November 20, if you recall, the board approved Scott Wiener's anti-flesh item 6-5, which prompted some protesters to strip naked in response.

Supervisor Wiener's ordinance would make it illegal for anyone over the age of five to expose their genitals or perineum on public streets, sidewalks, street medians, parklets, plazas, or while riding public transit.

"If the approval is finalized, the ordinance would take effect on Feb. 1, 2013, although opponents have also filed a lawsuit seeking to block the legislation," reports SF Appeal. "The ordinance would set fines that start at $100 and rise for each additional offense within a year."

All Public Nudity Coverage on SFist

In reaction to yesterday's 6-5 vote to ban public nudity, protestors once again gathered on the steps of San Francisco City Hall to hang out with their wangs out in a good, old-fashioned love fest. Our photographer was on the scene to bring you more than an eyeful.

Over the weekend, San Francisco hosted the annual World Naked Bike Ride. And naked it was, with private bits and pieces flopping about to and fro. But the ride is, it seems, more than showing off one's penis or vagina. According to World Naked Bike Ride, it's about the environment, oil, and all that jazz. Check it:

"To ride naked through our major city thoroughfares, expressways, downtown streets, boulevards, parkways, driveways, avenues, ways, lanes, alleys, drives and roads to draw attention to our worldwide issues and failures wrought upon our planet by the dependency on foreign oil supplies, the environmental & economic hardship that results from this monopoly of the oil cartel and the slow response of the automotive and transportation industries to provide more efficient and alternative sources of moving people and goods about."

So, before you think about our planet's worrisome dependency on foreign oil, feast your eyes on these fleshy beauties. Enjoy!

Mission Mission brings our attention to something of the utmost importance this morning: a Converse All Stars-sporting hipster streaker caught by SFPD on Thursday night. An especially brave move seeing as how last night's weather almost dipped down to freezing levels. Anyway, we're thrilled he's wearing Mission denizens' favorite choice in footwear. It made us wonder what other neighborhood locals would wear if, through a combination of drugs and alcohol (or so we assume), they too went streaking in the night.

If a zany nude runner took off in Hayes Valley, we could easily see them donning a lovely pair of Salvatore Ferragamos. In the Marina? A Kenneth Cole atrocity from DSW, probably. A streaker would sprint down 18th Street in the Castro wearing nothing but Reeboks or whatever footwear 15-year-old suburban boys are into right now. In SOMA, a black Frye Boot should be the only thing one wears while flopping their mammary glands and reproductive organs in public. In the Sunset? Flip-flops for sure. Down in Mission Bay ugly beige Uggs to match the ugly beige condos. And in the Tenderloin said hypothetical streaker would wear whatever shoes he stole off a victim from one of the aforementioned neighborhoods.

On Saturday, candid cyclists gathered in San Francisco to take part in the World Naked Bike Ride. How did it go? Don't ask us. This editor is saddled with red hair and thus diaphanous skin. There's not high enough SPF in the world to get us on a bike at noon with our blinding, milky flesh on display for the world to see. Perish the thought. Immediately. However, according to worldnakedbikeride.org, the fleshy ride was a smash.

We had a sizable turnout, compared to last March, of 50 or more riders with a nice mix of genders and ages. It was a nice mellow group. Most of the riders went naked including several women despite the cold coastal breezes at times. When riding further from the coastline the weather was actually quite pleasant. This year we road traffic-heavy Van Ness Street, the main route to the Golden Gate Bridge. We received loads of smiles, laughs, thumbs ups, honks and cheers even when the group took up one entire lane of traffic. Most passengers in passing cars had their iPhones out taking pictures. The new route up and over Lombard Street, the crookedest street in the world, was much better than last June. Most riders were able to ride to the top without walking. All-and-all a very successful ride.

The next World Naked Bike Ride goes down, if you will, on June 11, Saturday. at noon. Riders will meet at the north end of Justin Herman Plaza near Market and the Embarcadero, across from the Ferry Building.

For those of you not in the know, World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) is billed as an "international clothing-optional bike ride in which participants plan, meet and ride together en masse on human-powered transport (the vast majority on bicycles, but some on skateboards, rollerblades and roller skates), to deliver a vision of a cleaner, safer, body-positive world."

Want to see slinky, kinda nude women bathing in a tank of blood-colored water on Van Ness at noon? Of course you do. According to , PETA campaigner Jena Hunt "organized a protest scheduled for noon today at 600 Van Ness Ave., where two PETA 'chicks' in red bikinis will be crammed together in a tank of 'bloody' water with the message 'McDonald’s Scalds Chicks; to Death.'" (Aside: While we do not care much for McDonald's culinary vision, we highly recommend their Crispy ranch BLT sandwich, which you can get grilled or fried. Well worth the 600 calories. Trust us.) In an interview with the Ex, Hunt explains, there "a more humane slaughter method called controlled-atmosphere killing ensures that animals are killed painlessly while still in their transport crates before they have their throats cut or are handled by workers." Good point, Hunt. Also, there's a "McCruelty: I’m Hatin' It" billboard up at Sixth and Brannan today.

Want to get nekkid for nature? Bay Area photographer Jack Gescheidt has been photographing naked people draped among some of the region's most gorgeous trees as part of a nature advocacy project he calls Treespirit.

One part Spencer Tunick, famous for his installations of hundreds of nude people in public spaces, another part Eliot Porter, photographer of exquisitely elegant nature images, Gescheidt's images are aesthetically beautiful and deeply politically. All the people in the photographs are volunteers, and this Sunday, July 5, 2009, from 5-8pm you can participate in what will be a private, safe event.
