Photo: Large Naked Woman Stomps On Car In Noe Valley [NSFW]

A woman described as "heavyset" and naked except for her shoes was pulled off the J-Church line on Tuesday morning, and while cops and medical personnel were evaluating her near the intersection of 24th and Church in Noe Valley, she threw off a blanket that had been wrapped around her, walked up on the hood of one man's car, and stomped on his windshield. The man, John Knight, described the crazed woman as about 250 pounds, and he had a lot of explaining to do to his insurance company. more ›

Scene From A Golden Hydrant

Noe Valley Wells Fargo Robbed?

Noe Valley Wells Fargo Robbed?

Although SFPD has yet to confirm the story -- we called them and they're still "busy with last night's World Series chaos" -- word is that the Wells Fargo Bank in Noe Valley (4045 24th Street) was robbed this afternoon. Catherine Bergstrom (@CatherineBerg) sent out the following Twitter messages: "The #NoeValley Branch of Wells Fargo was robbed earlier this afternoon. Cops are still on the scene" and "Undercover cops galore & nervous Wells employee is telling [people] that the branch is temp closed." more ›

NIMBY Watch: Pavement to Parks Program Ends With Parklet Approvals in Noe Valley, North Beach

You may recall that brouhaha in Noe Valley over the possibility of a street closure to create a pedestrian plaza? Well, the Pavement to Parks Program sponsored by the City has closed up shop with one final set of approvals, and in Noe Valley they decided to back off from a full street closure in favor of two mini-parklets in parking spaces on either side of 24th Street between Vicksburg and Sanchez and between Noe and Sanchez. more ›

Tell Bevan Dufty You Want a Public Plaza In Noe Valley

Tell Bevan Dufty You Want a Public Plaza In Noe Valley

When your Editor lived in the Historic Mission District for many, many years, it was a lot to take. Not standing in line Bugaloos, asking for the whereabouts of the closest American Apparel, arguably well-dressed, bathed and lightly cologned -- the judgmental glares from the Converse-wearing let-'em-eat-cake set would, at times, prove too much. When that happened, we would head up 24th Street to more open-minded, albeit crowded, grounds of Noe Valley. more ›

To Vaccinate Or Not To Vaccinate?

To Vaccinate Or Not To Vaccinate?

So it seems even folks in the more wealthy, educated quarters of our fair city can succumb to superstition. The proprietors at the More Mojo clinic are throwing in their lot with the vaccine deniers at a session this weekend. more ›

Get Your Meat On at Drewes Brothers Butchers

Get Your Meat On at Drewes Brothers Butchers

Pulled from the Glen Park Parents Board mailing list, we came across this urgent plea for help. See, the recently opened Whole Foods is hurting small meat business Drewes Brothers Meats, located in Upper Noe Valley at 1706 Church. (If you don't know Drewes Brothers, you don't know meat; and if you don't know meat, may God have mercy on your soul.) more ›

Breaking: Twitter Founder Sells Home, Buys Home

The fine folks over at Curbed reported yesterday that Twitter co-founder Evan Williams (heretofore known as @ev) sold his SOMA penthouse (going for a scant $1,498,000) on Fourth Street. You know, that large megaplex across the street from K&L Wine Merchants? That one. Anyway, Williams bought a fancy new Victorian in Noe Valley. Charming! This comes on the heels of his partner, @biz, selling his own pad for fancier grounds. What's this mean? It means Twitter is doing well. Very well. (Can you give us some money, Evan? Oh, just kidding. Sort of.) more ›

Noe Valley Whole Foods Opens Today, Controversy Ensues

The grand opening of San Francisco's fifth Whole Foods is happening right this very second over at 3950 24th Street in Noe Valley. Supervisor Bevan Dufty will be there to cut the tape. Protesters will also be there to make noise. As most of you know, a boycott is in place after WF CEO John Mackey's made (careless?) remarks about health care, much like your drivers license, being a privilege, not a right. Anyway, for those of you into snagging organic produce and carob-covered treats at relatively high prices, have at it. For those of you who refuse (or simply cannot afford) to shop at WF, Foods Co is a neighborhood away. (Really, you can get cheap staples there. Lots of other affordable stuff to be found there, too, folks.) more ›

Man Found Along the J-Church Line Dies

Man Found Along the J-Church Line Dies

This morning, a 58-year-old man died "after being found between a curb and San Francisco Municipal Railway light-rail tracks" at Church Street at 22nd Street a little after 9 a.m. This resulted in police activity slowing down service. But, according to SF Appeal, none one yet knows how, exactly, he died. While the cause of death has yet to be determined, and police are still trying to figure that out, Appeal received an unconfirmed tip, saying, "'I just got a call from REDACTED saying that the J church incident involved a dude dying because they got hit by the J line...possibly between the inbound and outbound cars...'" Heavy. We'll update you as soon as we know more. Oh, and service has since been restored to normal operation. more ›

Power Outage Hits Mission, Noe Valley, Twin Peaks, Diamond Heights

According to Emergency_In_SF, "Power is sill out to 5,300+ customers in Mission & Noe Districts, Diamond Heights and Upper Market..." Most harrowing of all, SFist Deborah almost missed out on her Monday grocery shopping. She reports, "The power went out at Tower Market. We paid in cash as the computers went out right when we saw the total. Everyone else left empty-handed." more ›

Read This: Noe Valley Buzz

Read This: Noe Valley Buzz

Always on the hunt for neighborhood blogs -- although, let's face it, none can compare to Mission Mission -- we must tell you about Noe Valley Buzz. Created by Tricia Tulipano and Amber Justis, it's fun. And simple. And not saddled with loads and loads of icky text or notions of revolución. And prefers to use 'z' in lieu of 's.' And is perfectly unapologetic. They talk about Real Foods (RIP!), hot Jew Jacob Goldstein's even hotter Garage Store, and people who sell fruit that are out of season. Be sure to check it out, readers and Noe Valley residents. We'll advise you of any impending Noe Valley Buzz vs. Noe Valley, SF softball games. more ›

Blocker: 4000 24th St.

Blocker: 4000 24th St.

Our visit to 24th St. between Noe and Castro invites comparisons between this block and other particularly precious, retail-heavy blocks we’ve chronicled. We’re thinking about the 3400 block of Sacramento in Presidio Heights; we’re also thinking about the 1800 block of Union in Cow Hollow. The inevitable similarities between the three stretches are impossible to ignore, but where we found virtually nothing purposely funny on Sacramento and very little to laugh with on Union, there’s a certain humor here on 24th St. that’s a welcome change from the suffocating self-awareness that often weighs down the atmosphere of most boutique-rich areas. more ›

More Old Signage Uncovered

More Old Signage Uncovered

Once again, someone tore down a bitch of a wall and discovered even more old-time signage. (First bacon, now bourbon? What in heaven's name went on in this city back then?) This time it was uncovered in Noe Valley while renovation of a building at 25th and Church was underway. And once again, we hope someone puts a window where it ought to be. more ›

Susan Leal, Pink-Slipped?

Susan Leal, Pink-Slipped?

Although her contract ends in 2009, former SF Mayoral candidate and current San Francisco Public Utilities Commission chief Susan Leal might get the ax, according to Cecilia M. Vega over at the Chronicle. Her removal could kickoff a bloodbath of staff cuts by Newsom. And although her dismissal would need approval by committee, this seems like a done deal. According to the article: Leal received a telephone call Friday evening from Newsom's chief of... more ›

Blocker: 450 Collingwood

Blocker: 450 Collingwood

During our visit to this block of Collingwood, between 21st and 22nd Sts., we ask three residents which area neighborhood they most closely identify with. We get three different answers. 1: “Noe Valley – although I guess, technically, Noe Valley’s northern border is 22nd.” 2: (Shrug.) “I don’t know. Maybe the Castro? Eureka Valley? What is Eureka Valley? I suppose you can’t really call this a valley, since it’s up on a hill.” 3: “Do you live around here?” Not quite the consensus we’re hoping for. But surely we can all agree that the 400 block of Collingwood is San Francisco’s preeminent home of sidewalk birdhouses. more ›

Pierre Valley: A Real Neighborhood After All

Pierre Valley: A Real Neighborhood After All

Whether official neighborhood status has been self-established by its residents or not, it seems Pierre (pronounced pyair-ee) Valley actually exists. In fact, based on the map posted on the neighborhood's website outlining the neighborhood boundaries, we lived in Pierre Valley for two years. But back when we resided on Tiffany Avenue (allegedly the longest block in the city), we lovingly referred to the neighborhood as the Intermission. Guilty. We were among those who tried to coin an SF neighborhood with a witty name that, thankfully, never caught on. more ›
