Here's todays sports news
Today in Barry
Barry didn't play last night due to his legs being shot from playing Tuesday's 13 inning birthday game, thus disappointing a sold out stadium, Bud Selig, and scores of press from around the world who instead got stuck watching a very good pitching duel and Noah Lowry solidifying his role of staff ace. Maybe Bud Selig should institute some sort of "best interest of baseball" rule saying that if Barry isn't going to play, the Giants should announce it first thing in the morning so fans know they don't have to go, Bud can have a nice night out in the town, and all the press hordes can either go home or just hang out in the press booth and get drunk.
Around the Dial
To get you psyched for tonight's game, here's some news on the Warriors front:
What's the Score, Boys? What Did Bugs Bunny Do? What's With the Carrot League Baseball Today?
Soy es parados, your Bay Area baseball teams are losers, baby...
We Got a Runner
If, like us, you were driving around the city last night hearing weird sort of booms in the air it was because it was Fireworks Night at the Phonebooth. Now fireworks night at the ballpark can occasionally be sort of a weird thing, an obvious marketing ploy that can on the wrong night and with the wrong team be all that more disconnected from reality. Hey, our team is going nowhere, our front office is run by a bunch of cheapskates, and we'll never come close to the playoffs, but look at the shiny rockets exploding in the air!
But not last night.
Your San Francisco Giants Are All About the Love
We admit it, we have a love/hate thing with Barry Bonds. On one hand, we have an inate love of all things Orange & Black. On the other hand, we have a nagging feeling that the guy is a major chemically enhanced putz. Which is what happens when he doesn't play-- you forget just what it is that makes you stop whatever you're doing to watch one of his at-bats. Now that he's back, we've got nothing but love. And yes, we're imbeciles.
Your San Francisco Giants Beat L.A.!
With the weather turning nice and spring in the air, Giants' fans can't but help feeling a little hopeful these days. After a few dark, dark weeks, things are looking a bit up, especially in light of last night's 5-3 victory over the dastardly Dodgers and a truimphant return to .500 ball. Schmidt's off the DL and hitting them out, Barry has been cleared to start rehab, Jerome Williams is pitching better in Fresno, Noah Lowry snapped out of his funk, they took two from the A's, and they unveiled maybe the coolest alternate jersey in sports history. And wow, those A's fans are particularly testy these days, especially in regards to cracks about their Fearless Leader. More importantly, it looks like they found themselves a real, genuine closer. Ladies and Gentleman, may we introduce your new Giants savior, Tyler Walker. He of seven saves in eight chances, six since May 12. With two more games against LA and a weekend series against the first place Friars, the Giants can get back into the thick of things.
Heart Attack and Nine
Five games left, three back of the Dodgers, tied with the Cubs, a half game up on the Astros, and Milton Bradley losing his mind in LA. Does that say it all? Not if you're an A's fan. Then it's five games left, tied with the Angels, three distant games ahead of the Rangers, and Ichiro getting ready set a major record on the home turf.
He Hits it High, He Hits it Deep, He Hits it Outta Here!
Back in the halcyon days when SFist was launching and the Giants were getting their collective ass handed to them by the lowly Cincinnati Reds, it was looking pretty grim down at Third and King, and SFist was starting to think about next year for San Francisco baseball. But, oh, how things have changed. SFist got its playoff tickets in the mail yesterday and is pretty psyched about the idea of October baseball as the Giants are coming together at just the right time.
Giants Phever
Having successfully leaned on ace Jason Schmidt in the face of utter despair once again, this time turning to him to save them from from the ignominy of a season sweep by the lowly Pirates, the Giants are staying on in the Keystone State for their next series, heading east to face the Team of Brotherly Love in their cosy new ballpark for the first time tonight.
