I was intoxicated and reacted foolishly to provocation, but I take full responsibility."

Diaz apparently works for a Modesto-based electrician company called Cyber Electric, which has subsequently had its Yelp page bombed with negative reviews. People knew to go there because the company's name and logo are clearly visible on the side of the Cybertruck in the video.

Diaz denies yelling the homophobic slur, and tells SFGate that he had dealt with harrassment recently when riding in or driving the Cybertruck, regularly "getting flipped off" or getting the thumbs-down sign by passersby, which was he was expressing frustration with his gestures.

Diaz could also be heard, slurring, "We work for the government!" Maybe because he admires Elon?

He added, in an email to SFGate, that the Nazi salute "does not reflect my beliefs, and I’m sorry for the hurt it caused."

Neo-Nazis Joined the Anti-Abortion March In San Francisco on Saturday, Passed Out Fliers

In the Venn diagram of American voters, there is clearly some overlap between white evangelicals and white supremacists, and so it maybe shouldn't be shocking that Saturday's annual Walk for Life in San Francisco drew some neo-Nazi support.

SF News

anti-abortion

protests

neo-nazis

nazis

Jay Barmann

In the Venn diagram of American voters, there is clearly some overlap between white evangelicals and white supremacists, and so it maybe shouldn't be shocking that Saturday's annual Walk for Life in San Francisco drew some neo-Nazi support.

That Walk for Life march, which every January draws a slew of Catholics, evangelicals, and anti-abortion zealots from the outer reaches of California and beyond to think they're making some impact on the hearts and minds of pro-choice San Francisco, happened despite some inclement weather on Saturday.

The you-must-carry-your-pregnancy-to-term set gathered for a rally in Civic Center Saturday morning before marching down Market Street in the afternoon. And as BrokeAss Stuart reports, the event attracted several members of the Goyim Defense League (GDL) — an antisemitic group founded a few years ago in Petaluma whose name is a riff on the Jewish advocacy group the Anti-Defamation League.

One member of the group marched wearing red suspenders, which have become a symbolic uniform of the neo-Nazi cause, and another wore a t-shirt that said "Jews Rape Kids." A third can be seen on video making a Nazi salute amid the crowd.

<blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-captioned="" data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/reel/C2aKIRFLpG8/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="14" style=" background:#FFF;
Reddit, the angry internet's most favored bulletin board and scream chamber, announced late Wednesday that they were taking a new — if extremely belated — stand against hate, white supremacy, and violence. In updating their policy on violence, the company took sweeping action to shut down subreddits and instruct moderators to ban all material that "encourages, glorifies, incites, or calls for violence or physical harm against an individual or a group of people."

The statement went up on the site's moderator forum earlier Wednesday, and later in the day, as The Verge notes, multiple subreddits began disappearing including r/NationalSocialism, r/Nazi, and r/DylannRoofInnocent. Per CNet, other subreddits that are now dunzo include r/EuropeanNationalism and r/far_right, and racist-based subreddits such as r/racoonsareni**ers and r/whitesarecriminals.

"We also are making this update so that Reddit’s content policy better reflects our values as a company," writes moderator Landoflobsters. "In particular, we found that the policy regarding 'inciting' violence was too vague, and so we have made an effort to adjust it to be more clear and comprehensive." In addition to taking action against content that incites violence against people, the moderator adds, "likewise, we will also take action against content that glorifies or encourages the abuse of animals."

This is the second purge in the last two months at Reddit, following some post-Charlottesville
actions taken to shut down the subreddit known as r/Physical_Removal in August after users there were making light of or glorifying the death of Heather Heyer. However this time Reddit is taking a broader stand against all hate speech that encourages violence.

The site was founded in 2005 and quickly grew into the low-tech, high-engagement, anything-goes news-sharing and discussion-board hub that it is now. It would be another decade, however, as CNet notes, before Reddit would officially establish its first real, if vague, policy against bullying and hateful content — just a week after the short tenure of Ellen Pao as CEO, who made a prescient statement as she stepped down following a backlash against her own attempts to stop harassment and tamp down the chaos: "The trolls are winning."

Then, in the wake of the 2016 election, CEO Steve Huffman made another move to crack down on the site's "most toxic" trolls, though that did nothing to stop neo-Nazis and others from continuing to flourish in the site's many angrier corners.

Proponents of "free speech" on the internet have long looked to places like Reddit and Twitter as havens for the ability to talk openly about their own racism, sexism, and homophobia, if not their outright hopes committing acts of violence against any member of a group they hate. The platforms have come around in the past year to understand the role that their lack of rules has played in the coarsening of the culture, and in the incitement of actual, real-world violence, as they arguably did in Charlottesville.

As the NY Daily News reports, Reddit has responded to some Redditors' confusion over the new policy saying that topics like BDSM and hunting won't be affected, even if these could be arguably seen as areas where violence against people and animals will be discussed.

"Context is key," says Landoflobsters, pointing to this new page in the site's Help section, encouraging users to provide context whenever posting anything that could be viewed as violent. Also, the instructions say, "If your content is borderline, please use a NSFW tag. Even mild violence can be difficult for someone to explain to others if they open it unexpectedly."

A billboard in Chico stirred up some controversy as it depicted Donald Trump dressed in a Nazi uniform, standing alongside the swastika-inspired anti-45 logo that became popular shortly after the election.

According to KRON 4's report, the ad belongs to Rouse and Revolt, a local secondhand clothing store. Their logo is presented prominently alongside the depiction of Trump as a Nazi, framing twin mushroom clouds. The store's owner, Nicholle Lewis, spoke with Newsweek about the reaction to the billboard, which has been mostly negative. "I’m living in a small, podunk red town and I'm already getting death threats,” said Lewis. "My business has completely floundered. Overnight I had more one-star reviews than all the reviews I’ve received in a year." Newsweek also pointed out that Chico is a town with a population of 90,000, with many leaning to the right.

After numerous complaints from residents, the company who owns the advertising space, Stott Outdoor Advertising, took down the ad. Newsweek also spoke with Jim Moravec, the general manager for the ad company, who said, "I should have not accepted the ad in the first place."

Still, despite the backlash, Lewis seems to have some supporters. In a video report from Action News Now, the local news affiliate, one interviewee said, "My first reaction, honestly, was shock. I couldn't believe it. But as I sit here and look at it, I think it's bold, and I think it's courageous, and for Chico... I'm impressed with Rouse and Revolt." Another expressed a more mixed opinion, saying, "I guess it's cool they're, like, taking a stance and trying to promote, but I just... that's not the way to do it." A quick scroll through the store's Facebook page also turns up some more heated comments. As well, the store's Yelp page is currently blocked off from further reviews as Yelp goes about an "active cleanup" to remove posts based on the news rather than customer experience.

Additionally, Action News Now turned up a Facebook post from Lewis that features the image. The post reads, in part: "We support equality, we support equal rights, we support a woman's right to her own body, we support DACA, we support universal health care, we support gay people in any Place they live. We welcome all races, all religions, all countries of origin, all genders and we not only STAND with you, we kneel with you as well."

This isn't the first anti-Trump billboard to go up in northern California in recent weeks. Last Monday, a billboard calling for Trump's impeachment popped up next to the eastern span of the Bay Bridge. It was taken down after numerous complaints from observers, only to be put back up again to serve out the rest of its contract, which ended this past Sunday.

When Tina Fey recommended we stay home and eat sheetcake in response to white supremacist and neo-Nazi rallies being scheduled across the U.S., one Bay Area confection lover had another idea. They decided to take back the cake, and asked East Bay bakery Ashley Shotwell Cakes to make the ‘Kill Nazis’ cake seen above as a sort of coping mechanism against Sunday’s unpleasantness in Berkeley. But cake baker Ashley Shotwell, who looks fabulous, has had a pretty tough couple of days since posting a Facebook video, as the Chronicle reports her page turned a troll magnet for online harassment, hateful comments, and hundreds of toxic fake reviews.

Our story begins two weeks ago, in the immediate aftermath of the of the Charlottesville neo-Nazi rallies and attacks. Here in the Bay Area, someone commissioned the ‘Resist Fascism’ cake seen in the timelapse Facebook video above. That video has since enjoyed nearly 9,000 views and about 800 shares, inspiring one customer to request ‘Kill Nazis’ cake.

“I was like, ‘Why not?’ I didn’t even think twice about it,” Shotwell told the Easy Bay Express. She made the cake and posted her signature time lapse video on Wednesday afternoon last week. But within hours a few hours, Shotwell’s Facebook page had tuned into a cesspool of online harassment, misogynistic memes, and hundreds of blatantly false one-star reviews from all over the country.

“They were saying there were maggots in the cake, it was spoiled, there was a rat in the cake, a bike lock in the cake,” she said. “They were all fake. Some complained about bad customer service in my bakery but I don’t even have a storefront.”

The negative reviews have now pretty much been scrubbed from the Ashley Shotwell Cakes Facebook page — but the ‘Kill Nazis’ cake video has been removed as well. You can, however, still see the ‘Kill Nazis’ cake video on Instagram embedded at the top of this post.

It does not sounds as if Shotwell is willing to make another ‘KiIl Nazis’ cake, even if you ask nicely. "I'd probably suggest it say 'Punch Nazis' instead," she told the Chronicle.

A Sunday morning stroll in Alameda turned up a few Swastika-adorned flyers clearly designed to intimidate the Muslim community, and just a few blocks from the Islamic Center of Alameda, as ABC 7 reports. This comes less than a week after the East Bay Times noted vandalism and busted windows and a nearby Alameda synagogue, and all this is happening as tensions are high as the Bay Area anticipates this weekend’s possible white nationalist rallies in both San Francisco and Berkeley (along with the expected counter-protests).

CBS 5 notes that a total of three flyers, each depicting an Islamic woman wearing a hijab along with a swastika and the words “Help me kill you stupid,” turned up on the streets of Alameda. Resident Neil Crawford found the first one on a Sunday morning stroll, then alerted Alameda Police after finding a second flyer that afternoon. Upon investigating, the police found a third flyer later that day.

In response, dozens of Alamedans gathered at the Islamic Center of Alameda Monday night in a show of support. “We've had a lot of these things happening and escalating, and I don't think that's OK," Alameda resident Christine Vauer told NBC Bay Area. "I don't think it's OK to ignore it. I think we have to stand up.”

KRON 4 got a statement from Alameda Police Department on the matter. “On August 20, 2017, APD received a call of suspicious flyers found on the sidewalk in the 1400 block of Sherman Street. The reporting party stated he found one flyer across the street from his residence at approximately 9:00 a.m. The reporting party did not report the incident to the police until he found a second flyer at approximately 3:45 p.m. near his residence on the sidewalk. The reporting party did not believe the flyers were intended for him. The responding officer located a third flyer on the sidewalk during the investigation. The flyers were approximately 3” by 5” depicting an illustration with a swastika that contained a hate message. This investigation is on-going.”

The investigation into the Temple Israel vandalism is also ongoing. The Alameda Police do have surveillance video of that incident, but have not released it as of yesterday.

All the talk this week has been about a planned alt-right rally in San Francisco by the group Patriot Prayer, which is more or less just a Facebook group started by one guy, Vancouver, Washington-based activist and vlogger Joey Gibson. Gibson is an ardent Trump supporter and conservative, but he insists that he is not a white nationalist or white supremacist — he is not white himself, and is of Japanese descent — even though such elements have had a habit of making appearances at his rallies in Portland, Seattle, and elsewhere.

The possibility of neo-Nazis in our midst of the sort who gathered in Charlottesville last weekend has been freaking a lot of people out. And those who are in agreement with my op-ed earlier this week — saying that the left should not be giving these guys the photo op they want in front of the Golden Gate Bridge, doing battle with sticks or guns — have been trying to come up with creative protests of their own.

One such idea, which has gained traction on Facebook to the tune of 700 attendees and 4,000 "interested", is to have dog owners from across the city bring their pooches to poop on Crissy Field between next Friday afternoon and Saturday morning (and presumably the beach next to it where the rally is technically planned), so that rally attendees on Saturday find hundreds of "landmines" when they arrive. Says organizer "Tuffy Tuffington," "We can get together Sunday and clean up the mess and hug each other!"

Speaking to SFGate, Tuffington, who identifies himself only as a 45-year-old Richmond district resident, says, "I wouldn't want 500 dog owners descending on a park I use on a regular basis and pooping, either. But dog poop is a lot easier to clean up than hate."

Meanwhile, Gibson has continues to defend his event, and on Thursday he went on Tucker Carlson's Fox News show to insist that it will not be about white supremacy.

"We have about eight speakers and only one speaker is white," Gibson says in the video below. "We have a couple black speakers, a hispanic [speaker], we have a transexual [sic] speaker, we have a woman speaker, it's very diverse. It's really just about what's on the inside, it's about what you believe, your heart, your soul, it has nothing to do with skin color."

Gibson further tells Carlson that any violence that may occur around the rally is Nancy Pelosi's fault for using "rhetoric" like the term "white supremacist" to "rally her citizens" to come to the event and "chase us out."

The one white speaker scheduled at the SF rally is reportedly Kyle Chapman, a.k.a. Based Stickman, a weird new mascot of the militant alt-right who showed up to the rally-riots in Berkeley this past spring with a stick and an American flag shield, was subsequently arrested, and whose own lawyer says he has "severe psychological problems."

It's of course hard to see how such a rally isn't intended simply to rile left-wing activists and the so-called antifa, whom Gibson very vocally despises. (An antifa phone call campaign to a real estate firm where he worked seems to have cost him his job two months ago.) Gibson is not going to find a wealth of supporters from within the city limits of San Francisco or Berkeley, where his two rallies are planned on August 26 and 27, and it seems disingenuous when, in one of several breathless interviews this week, he talks about not wanting to further divide people. He told MyNorthwest, regarding a rally last Sunday that turned briefly violent, "I don’t want to be part of the problem, I want to be part of the solution. I don’t have all the answers. I am constantly questioning everything that I do … especially Sunday down in [Seattle] there were tons of street brawls because of our march. Even though it was all in self-defense, you have to ask yourself, ‘Am I creating a further divide in this country, even though I am trying to bring people together?’"

The answer is yes.

And Gibson can't control who shows up at his events, despite his saying "no Nazis" will be allowed. Accused Portland murderer Jeremy Joseph Christian was known to have attended at least one Patriot Prayer rally, and he described the stabbings in a courtroom outburst as "patriotism."

It remains to be seen whether Gibson's event will be given a final permit by the National Park Service.

The Bay Area is grappling with how with to solve a problem like Nazis in the Marina, as two alt-right/white nationalist rallies are planned for next weekend in San Francisco and Berkeley. In the wake of one dead and 19 injured during this weekend’s tragedy in Charlottesville, California lawmakers are calling on the National Park Service to revoke the permit of the San Francisco rally. (That rally is scheduled to happen at Crissy Field, so it falls under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service). But that’s unlikely to happen considering who the National Park Service reports to, so officials around the bay are looking for other ways to prevent these likely-to-be-very-racist ragers.

SF Weekly reports on Mayor Ed Lee and Sup. London Breed’s joint press conference Tuesday, at which both urged the park service to revoke the rally permit from a group called Patriot Prayer. “We have demanded that the National Park Service re-evaluate this,” Mayor Lee said at the press conference. “You wouldn’t do this in such a cavalier fashion if you knew what was going to happen.”

Breed added, speaking to prospective rally attendees on the alt-right/white nationalist spectrum, "You are not welcome here. Don’t come to San Francisco. We’re going to do everything we can to stop you."

[Update: The National Park Service has issued a response clarifying that a final permit has not been issued. They say, "Our highest priority is to ensure public safety, while honoring our obligation to uphold one of our nation’s most cherished Constitutional rights, the First Amendment right to freedom of speech... We will make a final determination on the permit within the next seven business days based on the thorough public safety review."]

One of the featured speakers at the planned San Francisco rally is Kyle Chapman a.k.a. Based Stickman — who, as the Chronicle points out, was one of the people arrested for violence at a March 4th “March 4 Trump” rally in Berkeley that predictably turned into a Punch 4 Trump slugfest. The Smoking Gun notes that Chapman “is a thrice-convicted felon who has served three separate prison terms, jumped bail, twice violated parole, used cocaine, LSD, and meth, and was described by his own lawyer as having ‘severe psychological problems.’” But hey, at least he didn't punch a girl!

Patriot Prayer organizer Joey Gibson insisted to the LA Times this week that he has no affiliation with neo-Nazis and noted that scheduled speakers at the SF event include "a black man and a transgender woman."

Berkeley is also the target of a white nationalist rally “scheduled” (though without any permits) for Sunday, August 27. Berkeley mayor Jesse Arreguín is trying to prevent that rally from happening, per the Daily Californian. Arreguín’s predicament is a little trickier, since no one has submitted any permit requests and the whole stupid thing is just a series of Facebook invites from what the mayor called an “amorphous group with no specific organizers”. The mayor urged Berkeley residents to ignore the rally and stay home, and that vowed that anyone committing violence would be arrested and prosecuted.

“I want to reiterate that we will not allow our community to be terrorized by a small band of white supremacists whose ideology of hate is a losing one,” Arreguín said in a statement. “Berkeley is proud of its multiculturalism and diversity, and we will continue to stand united against those who want to divide us.”

The issue is particularly thorny for new UC Berkeley chancellor Carol Christ, as her job entails being under attack from both sides on the safety vs. free speech debate. “We have not only an obligation to protect free speech but an obligation to keep our community safe,” Christ said in a Tuesday news conference “I’ve been working extensively with the police to plan for any disruptions that might occur.”

Christ gave additional remarks to CBS 5. “Were putting an enormous emphasis on safety and security,” she said. “Would I rather spend those dollars in different ways? Absolutely. I’d rather have more sections of computer science classes for undergraduates but it is critical for us to protect free speech and we will expend what we need to in order to do that.”

Setting an apparent example in this regard, the university has offered free use of Zellerbach Hall as the site for the off-again, on-again September 14 conservative pundit Ben Shapiro speech, according to the Daily Californian. The use of Zellerbach Hall is quite a concession, considering that venue has 2,000 seats and the Berkeley College Republicans had only a requested a 500-seat venue. Or it may be a deviously clever undermining of the request, as the “free” hall comes with security fee of as much as $9,000 — a fee which the Berkeley College Republicans tell the Chronicle they can’t afford.

Such devious, clever underminings of the typical neo-Nazi/antifa cage match script may prove to be the best way to handle these potential violent clashes. “Alt-right rallies don’t always have a great turn out. In April, media flocked to People’s Park in Berkeley when more than 200 alt-right protesters gathered in a ‘freedom of speech’ rally,” Nuala Sawyer notes in SF Weekly. “Antifascists failed to show up, and instead of the expected brawl, the rally was peaceful and anticlimactic. All told, there were almost more media than alt-right defenders in attendance.”

California lawmakers are calling on the National Park Service to rescind a permit they've issued for a gathering of alt-right figures, conservatives, and likely white nationalists at Crissy Field next weekend. The event, scheduled closely after last weekend's tragic violence and show of neo-Nazi fervor in Charlottesville, is set to happen on Saturday August 26, with a second rally scheduled the next day in Berkeley — obviously with the intent of enticing antifa forces to protest them and engaging in street battles like those we saw in March in April. And among the concerns many officials have is one major one, as the Examiner notes: concealed firearms. Due to a 2010 statute, guns are allowed in national parks, and Crissy Field is federal land.

State Senator Scott Wiener and Assemblymen Phil Ting and David Chiu penned a letter Tuesday to the National Park Service suggesting that they are not prepared to handle the likely scale and potential violence of Patriot Prayer's rally. As the LA Times reports, the letter reads, "Allowing a likely violent rally of White Supremacists so close to all of this is of deep concern to us. While we believe in the right to free speech and free assembly, we believe the National Park Service does not have the capacity to safely control this situation and therefore should not be issuing a permit for this rally at Crissy Field."

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi also separately issued a plea to the NPS, saying, "San Francisco takes great pride in being a city of peace which cherishes free speech and the right to public dissent. However, the National Park Service’s decision to permit a white supremacist rally at Crissy Field raises grave and ongoing concerns about public safety."

Blogger Joey Gibson, who started the group Patriot Prayer and has staged multiple pro-Trump rallies in Portland and Seattle over the last eight months, denies that he's either a white nationalist or a Nazi. However he can't deny that his events often lead to violent skirmishes, and he can't deny that white nationalists like the mentally ill man who killed two people aboard a Portland commuter train in May attend his rallies.

After images of suspect Jeremy Joseph Christian at a Patriot Prayer rally emerged in the days following the fatal stabbings, Gibson tried to disown Christian by saying he was "not one of us" and "not a good guy."

It should be noted that one of the things Christian was quoted as saying, following the killings, was "You call it terrorism, I call it patriotism." He also allegedly said "that's what liberalism gets you" and "Death to the enemies of America!"

On Tuesday, Gibson lashed out at Pelosi for suggesting his planned rally was for Nazis, telling the LA Times, "It's extremely dangerous that she's doing that. She's giving people license to use violence against me."

Speaking to MyNorthwest this week, Gibson sounds somewhat confused about the path forward for his group, following a tense rally in Seattle on Sunday that led to some fights breaking out.

"I don’t want to be part of the problem, I want to be part of the solution,” Gibson tells MyNorthwest. "I don’t have all the answers. I am constantly questioning everything that I do … especially Sunday down in [Seattle] there were tons of street brawls because of our march. Even though it was all in self-defense, you have to ask yourself, ‘Am I creating a further divide in this country, even though I am trying to bring people together?’ I have to ask that question and we have to rethink what it is we want to do."

Referring to Charlottesville, Gibson says, "I believe in [white supremacists’] right to march, but the problem is they are trying to latch onto our movement. And they did it under the guise of ‘unite the right’ … the problem is it’s more identity politics. It’s using your race as a means to further your agenda. All that does is divide people. I want nothing to do with that."

Tech giants Google and Facebook, as well as Twitter, web hosting company and domain registry GoDaddy, and Google subsidiary YouTube, have all taken stands against the white supremacist site The Daily Stormer, effectively shutting down their web presence for now.

These actions follow on similar stances taken by Airbnb and Paypal against the alt-right, citing their terms of service agreements.

A rumor spread quickly on social media Monday that white supremacist site The Daily Stormer had been hacked by the group Anonymous, who vowed over the weekend to shut down those advocating for domestic terrorism or the alt-right. The site itself showed a front-page post proclaiming as much, but as Salon reported, that post went up shortly after the site's web host, GoDaddy, warned them they would need to find a new host within 24 hours — clearly in an attempt to confuse the story.

GoDaddy took action after the Daily Stormer posted a story blaming the victim in the Charlottesville protests, Heather Heyer, and an outcry erupted on social media. A spokesperson for the company told the New York Times, "Given The Daily Stormer’s latest article comes on the immediate heels of a violent act, we believe this type of article could incite additional violence, which violates our terms of service."

This potentially marks a major change of policy for GoDaddy, which previously had refused to shut down sites including this one under First Amendment protections. As the Daily Beast reported last month, GoDaddy said it did "not see a reason to take any action" against the Daily Stormer after an article pledged to "track down" the family members of CNN staffers.

Following GoDaddy's action, within hours of Daily Stormer registering its domain with Google Domains, that registration was canceled, as Business Insider reports, with Google saying they didn't want their services used to incite violence, and "We are cancelling Daily Stormer’s registration with Google Domains for violating our terms of service."

The site then turned to a company called Zoho, which also canceled the site's registration for the same reason around noon on Monday.

At some point, a Twitter account with the handle @dailystormers was suspended, and a Toronto-based company called Tucows, which masks the personal information of domain registrants, unmasked the information of Daily Stormer founder and professed neo-Nazi Andrew Anglin, as Reuters reports.

Facebook took their own stand to begin stemming the spread of the Daily Stormer article, however they stopped short of flagging or deleting posts that included user commentary. As The Verge explains, Facebook acknowledged that the article violated their terms of service, and links to it would be removed automatically unless they contained commentary condemning the article.

The article itself, however, is now inaccessible because TheDailyStormer.com is now offline.

YouTube, under the Alphabet umbrella, also shut down the site's channel.

In February of this year, the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups, identified The Daily Stormer as the "top hate site in America."

In an autobiography, founder Anglin said, "I had always been into 4chan [a message board popular with the alt-right and many racist radicals], as I am at heart a troll. This is about the time /new/ [a particular 4chan board] was going full Nazi, and so I got into Hitler, and realized that through this type of nationalist system, alienation could be replaced by community in a real sense, while authoritarianism would allow for technology to develop in a direction that was beneficial rather than destructive to the people."

In 1962, just four years after Lilly Cassirer received a settlement of $13,000 from the German government for a painting looted by the Nazis, she died.

Cassirer, who was Jewish, fled Germany for England during the Holocaust in 1939, forcibly selling a Camille Pissarro oil painting for $360 in exchange for visas that secured safe passage for her and her family. Cassirer's father-in-law had bought the painting directly from Pissarro's own dealer in Paris, and as Artsy reports, appraisers say that the work, Rue Saint-Honoré, Après-midi, Effet de Pluie — an 1897 impressionist Paris street scene that over time found its way into a Madrid museum — is now worth more than $30 million. Cassirer’s great-grandchildren have now been in a decades-long battle to get it back after a family friend spotted it in Madrid in the 1990s.

On Monday, the U.S. Appeals Court in San Francisco reanimated the family’s 12-year suit against Spain's Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, reversing a 2015 lower court decision that found the family was no longer the painting’s rightful owner. As the Art Paper explains, the appeals court ruled in part that the legality of the museum’s ownership hinges on whether curators there knew the painting was wrested through a forced sale.

The museum’s lawyer insists to the Associated Press that the museum's patron, Baron Hans-Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza, "acquired the painting in good faith in 1976 and the [museum's] foundation, in turn, acquired the painting in good faith in 1993." But Cassirer’s heirs say that the museum's trained experts should have known better in researching the painting's provenance, and a torn label on the back of the painting from the old family gallery in Germany has buoyed their case. “That label on the back means unequivocally that Spain and the museum knew,” David Cassirer, one of the plaintiffs, told the San Diego Tribune.

After leaving Cassirer's hands, the painting made its way through the hands of several U.S. art collectors before a New York gallerist sold it to Thyssen-Bornemisza, a Swiss industrialist and avid art collector. When the baron died, following the negotiations of his Spanish-born fifth wife, Spain purchased his collection for a whopping $338 million and created the Madrid museum that now bears his name. Whether the baron or the museum knew of the illegality of the 1939 transaction remains to be decided, but the plaintiffs say they're confident the court will return the painting to them.

The case was first brought by Lilly Cassirer's grandson and heir, Claude Cassirer, in 2005, and ultimately taken up by his children after his death in 2010. As David Cassirer tells the Associated Press, when they first brought their claim to the Madrid museum, their reaction essentially amounted to "Go ahead, sue us."

“This is a case in which the record is quite clear,” says attorney David Boies to the Daily Report. Boies has been working on the case for the Cassirer family, and sees it as setting a precedent for Nazi-taken art that was sold under duress. “The museum was on notice that the art had been looted.”

It seemed marginally possible last month that Twitter might not unilaterally suck at curbing hatred and abuse on its platform when it banned the accounts of several major "alt-right" trolls. Among the group was Richard Spencer, who compared the move to a 1934 purge of Nazi leadership, if that tells you anything about his sympathies. Spencer is credited by the Atlantic with popularizing the euphemistic term "alt-right," quoting his stated goal as a "new society, an ethno-state that would be a gathering point for all Europeans," achieved through a "peaceful ethnic cleansing." And in case you weren't convinced that this dude, who is of course a prominent pro-Trump voice, is an actual, literal Nazi, at a conference in November he led 200 white men in Nazi salutes. "Hail Trump! Hail our people! Hail victory" he said, that last phrase an english translation of the popular Nazi phrase "Seig Heil."

Now, less than a month after banishing Spencer, Twitter has let him crawl back in, reinstating and re-verifying his account. Nice.

According to BuzzFeed, this is what happened: Spencer's violation of Twitter's terms of use wasn't to do with his garbage ideology or harassing behavior, but instead with his simultaneous use of other accounts: His think tank the National Policy Institute, @npiamerica, and his online magazine, @radix journal, in conjunction with his own account. The accounts, Twitter says, were overlapping, and were banned as a result. An email from Twitter to Spencer obtained by BuzzFeed asks him to select one account for reinstatement.

Spencer, though, seems intent on reinstating all of his accounts. “I worked on getting my personal reinstated first. Next will be Radix, NPI, _AltRight_, and WSP,” he wrote on Twitter. Go for it, buddy.

And good job all around this weekend, Twitter: Vox points out that alt-right publication Breitbart had its account verified on Saturday.

There's still one particularly pernicious troll whom Twitter might ban: President-Elect Donald Trump. A Nazi flag appeared Wednesday on the flagpole of a Mission district home, raising immediate concern on the internet, and in the neighborhood. The homeowner who put up the flag says he wanted to make a provocatively semi-ironic "statement about our President elect," but of course his visual statement could be interpreted in a number of ways, especially outside of San Francisco — and especially with some of the anti-Semitic vitriol spouted by Trump supporters.

A tipster sent us an initial photo, which we at SFist didn't immediately believe was real, but, indeed, this did happen. SFist's Caleb Pershan went to the scene of the home, which is in Dolores Heights near Sanchez and 21st Streets, and found reporters already arriving to discuss the matter with the homeowner, who declined to be identified. CBS 5 reveals that he's Frederick Roeber, an internet pioneer and a software engineer and physicist. Asked whom he had voted for in the election, Roeber said "not him," indicating Trump.

Shortly thereafter the man who owned the home replaced the Nazi flag with a rainbow peace symbol flag. I guess he heard the message that his Nazi bit wasn't that funny.

Previously, the home was a guest house built by SF Mayor and California Governor James Rolph.

We now know the location, however, as the organization intending to livestream the rally just announced via Twitter that their target is <strike>the Malcolm X Plaza at San Francisco State University</strike>. [See the update below.]

Identity Evropa is led by Nathan Damigo, a resident of Oakdale, and describes itself on its website (which we will not link to out of principle) as "a generation of awakened Europeans who have discovered that we are part of the great peoples, history, and civilization that flowed from the European continent."

As noted by Broke Ass Stuart, various groups are already discussing a possible counter-protest — suggesting things could get hectic in SF today. It's Going Down has detailed Identity Evropa's white nationalist efforts, and suggests in a post yesterday that people should prepare to respond to today's rally in real time.

"We also know that at 3pm tomorrow, people are probably going to know where IE is holding their rally by watching the livestream," It's Going Down writes. "At 3pm, if you and your friends hear where IE is at, what can you pull off?"

This is not the first we've heard of Identity Evropa. In September, a tipster wrote into SFist that he had spotted fliers from the group around the Marina district. Members also organized an event in May at UC Berkeley where they handed out anti-immigrant literature. According to It's Going Down, about 20 people showed up at that event.

While it is entirely possible that Identity Evropa will indeed rally at San Francisco State University today, it of course is also possible that this is all PR bluster and that no one will show up. Let's hope for the latter.

Update: The group that live-streamed the rally, Red Ice, was either uninformed or intentionally misled possible counter-protesters as to its location. The rally was held at the Embarcadero.

A far-right rally at the state Capitol erupted into chaos today, as counter-protesters and marchers clashed violently. The LA Times reports that a group of neo-Nazis planned the event several weeks in advance, and that at least five people have been stabbed. The Sacramento Fire Department describes the resulting violence as a "mass casualty incident," and notes that some of the injuries are critical.

Frances Wang, a reporter with ABC 10, was on the scene and captured dramatic video of members of the Traditionalist Worker Party — a group which the Times identifies as neo-Nazi — clashing with black-clad counter-protesters. The disturbing videos show people being beaten and kicked, some from behind, as police on horseback and foot struggle to restore order.

In response to the violence, ABC 10 reports that the original rally organized by the Traditionalist Worker Party has been canceled. On their website, the group describes its purpose as "building a nationwide network of grassroots local leaders who will lead Americans toward a peaceful and prosperous future free from economic exploitation, federal tyranny, and anti-Christian degeneracy.”

The identity of the stabbing victims — whether neo-Nazi or counter-protester — remains unclear, although one witness tweeted out that three of the four people he saw stabbed were African American.

This incident is reminiscent of a far-right rally and counter-protest in Anaheim in February. In that instance, members of the KKK fought with counter-protesters, and at least three people were allegedly stabbed by an alleged San Francisco Klansman in the resulting melee.

Police remain on the scene at the Capitol building, and no arrests have been made at this time.

Update: According to the Sacramento Fire Department, seven people have been transported to the hospital after sustaining injuries. The Capitol is reportedly now clear of all protesters. ABC 10 now reports that two of the injured have life-threatening injuries.

Chris Harvey of SFD described the scene to the LA Times as "quite a bit of a melee."

Although not in attendance today, the chairman of the Traditionalist Worker Party, Matthew Heimbach, told the paper that "We will be back. This is a victory for us because more of them walked away injured."
