What to See at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2010

What to See at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2010

Hey y'all! It's the 10th anniversary of the free concert that Warren Hellman built in Golden Gate Park, and the stars are coming out to celebrate — along with, easily, half of San Francisco. Yes, it's wildly crowded (because it's free), but as Warren pointed out this week, there's never been any violence or strife in the nine previous years, and it's usually just a glorious, tightly packed celebration of music, hardly strictly limited to country and bluegrass more ›

Afternoon Palate Cleanser: Cee-Lo Green's "F**k You"

Afternoon Palate Cleanser: Cee-Lo Green's "F**k You"

It's already been hailed as an "instant classic," and judging from the immediate internet buzz-a-thon it received upon leaking over the weekend that's probably accurate. The song is called "Fuck You," from Goodie Mob/Gnarls Barkley star Cee-Lo Green, off his upcoming album, and for those of a more delicate nature (or just for shits for the rest of you), here's the radio-friendly version which is called "Forget You" (fast-forward to minute 52) which we're venturing to guess won't achieve "classic" status. more ›

More Awesome Photos From Outside Lands, Including Al Green

Obviously, we couldn't be everywhere at once at this year's Outside Lands. So now, a couple days after the fact, we give you this awesome new collection of photos from blogger Kata Rokkar of both days of the fest, including the amazing and still very spritely Al Green. See just a few here. more ›

Scenes From Outside Lands 2010

             + 18 more

We didn't make it to everything at this year's Outside Lands, but you know what? We had a good time! Especially yesterday, when the sun came out and shined on Chromeo's set in the Speedway Meadow — and right as that gang of industrious youths scaled the double fences and crashed into the show. Even with three times as many people yesterday as there were on Saturday, it remains the most civilized, large-scale fest around (Treasure Island, with its two compact stages, is obviously civilized, but smaller), especially with all that wine and fine food going around. more ›

At Outside Lands, Janelle Monae and Phoenix Rocked

We'll have some photos for you in a bit, but for now, please enjoy this little clip from 7x7 of the amazing Janelle Monae, who by many accounts was one of the major highlights of this year's festival, despite going on late and doing only a handful of songs. The girl's got talent. more ›

Outside Lands: A User's Guide

Outside Lands: A User's Guide

San Francisco's big, multi-stage music fest, Outside Lands, is back this year in Golden Gate Park, in the jolly old month of Fogust, scaled back to two days instead of three and with one fewer stage to run between. The fun starts tomorrow at noon, with The Whigs kicking off an early set at the Speedway Meadow. But allow us to call out a few more things to catch -- and we'll allow you to respond in the comments with all the MUST-SEE bands that we missed. more ›

Pre-sale tickets go up tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. (password=summer), and above, their performance of Pink Floyd's "Eclipse," from KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic, recorded last fall -- all part of the Lips' recent revisiting of Dark Side of the Moon, an album which Wayne Coyne calls "a meticulously crafted production." more ›

Treasure Island Music Fest Lineup Announced, Includes LCD Soundsystem, Belle & Sebastian

Treasure Island Music Fest Lineup Announced, Includes LCD Soundsystem, Belle & Sebastian

The lineup for this year's Treasure Island Music Fest was just announced, and once again it looks pretty good! This cozy little fest in the middle of the bay has been touted by many as extremely "well organized," but we think what makes it so special and swell is that there are only two stages, they're right next to each other, and the acts don't overlap. It makes for some very calm, and not so exhausting concert-going, especially for those of us no longer in our twenties. more ›

Coachella 2010 Dispatch: Days 2 & 3 Were Better

             + 16 more

We got over our trauma of getting there and getting in, and started enjoying ourselves more by Day 2, when several of our favorite acts came on, including SF's own Girls and Faith No More, Australia's Temper Trap, Gossip, Tokyo Police Club, Beach House, the xx, and MGMT. We had to get out of there a little early, as the throngs arriving for Muse started giving us flashbacks to Day 1 and we needed to rest our feet. more ›

Coachella a Holy Mess, But Passion Pit and Jay-Z Were Good

Unlike in previous years when the enormous desert music fest felt relatively organized, if chaotic, Coachella 2010 feels like an overcrowded nightmare — and it's not just because we're getting older. A lot of the acts sounded great, including She & Him, Passion Pit, La Roux, and LCD Soundsystem. Jay-Z brought down the house with numbers like "99 Problems" and a version of "Forever Young" featuring a surprise guest appearance by Beyoncé. But seriously, though, even the twenty-one-year-olds this year seemed battle-scarred and shell-shocked after a day of fighting through massive, shove-y crowds in the hot desert sun. more ›

MGMT Unveils New Material at the Fillmore

MGMT Unveils New Material at the Fillmore

Just prior to their appearance at Coachella this weekend, hipster wunderkinds MGMT unveiled music from their second album, Congratulations, last night at the Fillmore. NBC Bay Area's Ben Russo draws comparisons to T. Rex and the Zombies, and says, "While Congratulations is a stronger album as a whole, its lack of a certified dance pop hit may lose the majority of audiences." That's one way of putting it... We just heard people grumbling that it sucked. [NBC Bay Area] more ›

Afternoon Palate Cleanser: Mayer Hawthorne's "I Left My Heart in San Francisco"

Los Angeles-based jazz crooner Mayer Hawthorne, whose voice has quite a lot of Mel Tormé loveliness to it, plays his last U.S. date before Coachella and his European tour next week at The Warfield, April 15th.
