East meets West in a fascinating exhibit at the Exploratorium for just a few more days. "The World of Your Senses" delves into the surprising parallels in how traditional Buddhism and modern Western science understand our sensory perceptions. The exhibition was created by Tibetan Buddhist monks and nuns who have been studying western science while living in exile in India. Several of them are on hand to discuss the show with visitors, including one who is demonstrating the traditional Tibetan painting style used for the exhibition panels. More pictures here. Really, make time in your busy schedule for this remarkable chance to chat with the monastics and learn more about how our own bodies work.

Kylie Minogue: Perfect Poster Girl For Jean Paul Gaultier At The DeYoung
Who better to promote Jean Paul Gaultier's upcoming exhibit at the deYoung Mueseum than Kylie Minogue? No one, that's who. The pop icon's image, as seen above, will grace poster walls, lampposts, and a sundry of buildings in the Bay Area during the exhibition starting this week. (Her laced visage and body was also seen at pitstops in Montreal.)
Haight-Ashbury Museum of Psychedelic Art And History [Video]
The Haight-Ashbury Museum of Psychedelic Art and History, a proposed museum that would focus on psychedelic art and Haight-Ashbury during the psychedelia movement of '60s. Supporters are trying to raise funds via IndieGoGo. Here's what it's all about:
Exploratorium Breaks Ground at Pier 15
At 10am this morning officials from the Exploratorium held a groundbreaking ceremony for the $300 million project which will transform Piers 15 and 17 on the northern waterfront into a state-of-the-art, 9-acre science playground for the City's favorite hands-on, educational museum.
Exploratorium Receives $90M Gift from Anonymous Donors
Recently approved to start building a $175 million waterfront museum on Piers 15 and 17, the Exploratorium (the city's finest hands-on museum) just received a whopping $90 million donation care of two anonymous donors. "The Exploratorium has outgrown its current home at the Palace of Fine Arts," reports SF Business Times. "The planned new museum would be three times larger." Now all they need is an additional $40 million, and they're in business.
NSFV: Whole Steer Butchered at SFMOMA Event
This is another NSFV (Not Safe for Vegans) post, so consider yourselves warned. SF Weekly food blogger Meredith Brody snapped the pic at right of a whole steer that spit roasted and then butchered before an audience at a event Saturday night celebrating a week of events at the museum focusing on Futurism. We, ourselves, are simultaneously grossed out and drooling over the photo and this write-up by Brody, which describes how the meat slices were sent onto a conveyor belt around the room, slathered in mole, and served atop Tartine bread along with a bunch of yummy cocktails.
Presidio's Disney Family Museum to Open October 1
SF Citizen has word that the (controversial) Walt Disney Family Museum will open to the public on October 1.
Gunman Opens Fire at Holocaust Museum in Washington DC
Scores of police are on the scene at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC after shots were fired inside the complex. According to early reports, two people were hit. A rifle might have been used as well. An eyewitness account claims that a security guard was "down and bleeding on the floor." San Francisco's Holocaust memorials, as many of you recall, also have trouble keeping chaos at bay. The gunman was shot and arrested. DCist has more on the story.
Revised Plans for the Presidio Released, Chron Sits on CAMP Plans
While feather were ruffled at last year's Gap/Don Fisher/Presidio Museum/no bowling alley plan meeting thingy, this year things were a bit calmer. According to SFCItizen, the new plans for the Fisherization of the Presidio were released last night, and he scored an early look. Some highlights: The "white box" is no more, the Lodge (i.e., a “massive hotel”) is stuck in the middle of it all, the Walt Disney Family Museum (isn't "family" implied?) will boggle the mind, and more. The bowling alley, as most of you know by now, will be yet another memory of San Francisco past.
Photo du Jour 170
Things got a wee bit heated at last night's Presidio Trust Public Board of Directors Meeting. The hot topic about was that art museum thingy we most likely never plan on visiting, but sure sounds swell nevertheless. Anyway, according to Jim Herd, who snapped the above shot, Newsom addressed the crowd, and then he was loudly booed when he finished. Tough crowd, tough crowd. (Read more about it here.)
Money Can't Buy You Love, But It'll Buy a Museum
The fight over the Presidio may come down to fisticuffs: Gap founder Don Fisher is trying to build a museum near the main post of the Presidio, while many San Franciscans aren't too happy about that. According to the Chron, besides the museum, a "119-room hotel, which also will include meeting space, a restaurant and a bar, expansion of the old Army movie theater [into]... two new theaters, a bar and lobby; and the creation of a heritage center." Add to that the "new Walt Disney Family Museum, which is expected to open next year." (Uhh. When was the "Walt Disney Family Museum" approved? How did we miss that?)
SFist Watches: Your Locals On Reality TV

But When is Spinster Appreciation Day?
Here at SFist, we have a general editorial policy of opposing everything; but we've looked, and there's just very little to dislike about "Family Appreciation Day." Except maybe the logo. Seriously, what font is that? It looks like something from a used car dealership. But aside from that, it's actually a pretty cool initative. Which is probably why Gavin's trying to take credit for it, as if he has now personally kissed every baby in Northern California.
