In America, where gods of industry are all too literally considered deities, we're still not through contending with the legacy of Steve Jobs.

Products aside, the technology leader's flair for theatrics makes him worthy of film treatment, which he's already gotten once over with Jobs, Ashton Kutcher's 2013 vanity project. This new take is Steve Jobs and stars not Kutcher but Michael Fassbender, who looks as little like Jobs as can be, but surely hopes to carry the role with his on-point mannerisms and delivery.

As the Verge reports, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, who adapted the script from Walter Isaacson's hit biography, the film is made up of three half-hour scenes that track the famous press unveilings of the Macintosh, NeXT, and the iMac. Shooting in the Bay Area called for an audience of '80s-looking extras back in early January.

Though some names on the film have come and gone — Christian Bale was attached at one point — the final product is directed by Danny Boyle, who won the Academy Award with Slumdog Millionaire (2008). Seth Rogan stars as Steve Wozniak, Jobs' longtime friend and collaborator, and the film also includes performances from Kate Winslet and Jeff Daniels.

The "next big thing," as Apple might say, arrives October 9th.

In the last day or so, the scaffolding and tarps have come down around the historic New Mission Theater sign and marquee at Mission and 22nd, revealing a brightly painted version of the once chipped and long weathered landmark — originally designed by architect Timothy Pflueger, who's also responsible for the Art Deco lobby. This will, as we've talked about before, be a part of the new Alamo Drafthouse New Mission, the cinema-with-booze-and-food out of Austin that's slated to open this fall. Local photographer Thomas Hawk grabbed the shots of the pretty sign and its brand new neon bits (which haven't yet been turned on), noting that the name "New Mission" standing alone has kind of taken on a new meaning.

He writes, on Ello:

Although the theater was always called The New Mission Theater, the "New Mission" takes on a different sort of connotation now that the beat up old discount 99 cent only store that was next to it has been converted into a brand spanking new condo complex called the Vida.

There has been a lot of concern and graffiti around the Mission lately about "gentrification" -- the new condos that seem to be popping up everywhere in SF have become one of the symbols that the anti-gentrification crowd has latched on to -- along with the big tech busses, expensive new restaurants and your garden variety tech worker / "hipster."

... I just espouse tolerance for everybody, gentrifiers and anti-gentrifiers alike, just between the two of us. :)

Having lived in and photographed the Bay Area for almost 25 years now though, I will say it's amazing how much it has changed -- especially in the last 5.

Based on the autobiographical graphic novel of the same name by Phoebe Gloeckner, Diary of a Teenage Girl was one of the breakout hits of Sundance this year, and will now be hitting theaters this summer thanks to Sony Pictures Classics, which snapped it up during this year's festival. Set in 1970s-era San Francisco, SFist first caught wind of the production back in early 2014 when stars Alexander Skarsgard and Kristin Wiig were spotted at location shoots around town.

As you can see in the lush, Instagram-filtered trailer brought to us today by Yahoo Movies, it's a coming-of-age tale centered on 15-year-old Minnie Goetze (played by 23-year-old British actress Bel Powley) as she comes into her own, sexually. She's encouraged by a libertine mom (played by Wiig), and then has an affair with the handsome, older Skarsgard, who is actually her mom's boyfriend.

The film provides a judgement-free look at young Minnie's budding sexuality, and as the NYT's Manohla Dargis wrote that director Marielle Heller "pulls off the tricky feat of honoring Minnie's sexuality without exploiting it or her."

Diary of a Teenage Girl opens in select theaters on August 7.

Back in 1982, when the original Poltergeist opened, I was a bit obsessed with it, and would end up seeing it a total of six times in a theater. What can I say? I loved horror movies, it was summer vacation, I was a latchkey kid, and most of my friends were out of town till school started up again. So I find it amusing that 33 years later there's a summer remake starring someone I went to school with. Sadly, it doesn't look like I'll be seeing this reboot six times. Also, Jared Harris? You are no Zelda Rubenstein.

Just last year, the cast and crew for an Aaron Sorkin-penned Steve Jobs biopic was in chaos. Director David Fincher had bailed on the project, as had possible star Leonardo DiCaprio. Though eventual director Danny Boyle sought Christian Bale for Jobs, the gig ended up going to German/Irish actor Michael Fassbender.

Fassbender, along with Seth Rogen as Steve Wozniak was spotted numerous times in the Bay Area as the film shot here earlier this year. Some of you who ended up being extras in the movie might have even seen them in action! Now you can get a peek at the fruits of their labors, as the first trailer for Steve Jobs dropped Sunday night.

They don't give you much, to be sure. Steve Jobs was maybe a dick? Lots of people yelled at him? He yelled at other people? There is clapping? The biggest revelation, perhaps, is seeing Fassbender in character (as opposed to in grainy Instagram shots) as the Apple co-founder.

The film is "set backstage at three iconic product launches and ends in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac," (per its official logline), so don't get all excited expecting to see the Lisa. It's currently scheduled for release on October 9, 2015.

Welcome to Me - AMC Van Ness and Presidio

Welcome to Me is like a Saturday Night Live movie based on a character that really shouldn't have a back story. Would Penelope, Kristen Wiig's recurring SNL character who is always one-upping people at parties, be funnier if you found out her backstory is that she has borderline personality disorder, is a virtual shut-in, and she's just stopped taking her meds? Because that's pretty much the set-up of this indie comedy that just screams indie comedy at every step.

Wiig's Alice Klieg lives in Palm Desert, and, due to her mental illness, has a limited life and very set routine. The TV is always on, either airing infomercials or old VHS tapes of Oprah shows that she knows by heart. She visits a therapist (Tim Robbins). She buys pudding and lotto tickets at the corner store. And most of what she says comes via prepared statements she pulls out of her fanny pack.

And then she wins the lottery.

What she chooses to do with that money is the bulk of the movie: She convinces a flailing public access station, run by two brothers (James Marsden and Wes Bentley) to produce a talk show starring her, about her, and air it two hours a day, five days a week. Of course her myopic worldview makes for some funny moments--her insistence that she always make an entrance in a swan boat; sitting and eating a meat cake for 10 minutes; rehashing past hurts with badly acted reenactments. But it also makes for some really disturbing ones, like her deciding she's going to neuter dogs, live and on the air for several episodes. (She was once a veterinary assistant.)

A person as self-centered and unwilling to address her illness as Alice would likely have estranged her family and friends long ago, but in the movie they have, inexplicably, stuck by her. They include an ex-husband, played by Alan Tudyk, and a best friend, played by Linda Cardellini. Her friends, for reasons never made clear, care about Alice as more than just the source of some of uneasy laughter. But we're never given any other reason to care.

Iris - The Clay

Albert Maysles, along with his brother David, directed some of the best and most influential documentaries ever made, including Salesman, Gimme Shelter, and of course, Grey Gardens. Going solo since the death of David in 1987, Albert was making movies up until his passing in March, including this one about 93-year-old designer — of interiors, fabrics, and clothes —and fashion icon, Iris Apfel.

While this film isn't quite like Grey Gardens in terms of its approach to its subject, one can't deny Little Edie and Iris Apfel are spiritual twins when it comes to style. I don't think Iris would be opposed to wearing a sweater on her head if it went well with the dozens of bracelets and necklaces she happened to be donning, because, in her own words, "It's better to be happy than well-dressed."

Even if you've never heard of Iris, it's probably safe to bet you've at least seen her and her giant glasses, short grey hair, and mounds of bangles. And seeing her packed-to-the-gills residences, her daily routines, and her relationship with her 100-year-old husband, all through the eyes of Albert Maysles, is nothing short of a treat.

If you're in a comedy with Sofia Vegara, and her performance looks subtle next to yours? Well, you might be doing it wrong. Reese Witherspoon has been funny before, but from the looks of this one, she may have forgotten that comedy is more than screaming and mugging for the camera. We could all use a good female-centric buddy cop movie, but this isn't it.

Arnold's daughter (Abigal Breslin) becomes infected with the zombie virus, and he decides to buck the system and keep her out of the mandatory quarantine, fleeing the law with his soon-to-be zombie daughter at his side. Zombisim! The ultimate I'LL BE BACK.

At a shareholders meeting in SF this morning, Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger made a few big announcements with regard to the Star Wars franchise, and fans across the internet are already going nuts. First off, the title of the first Star Wars stand-alone feature will be Rogue One, and it will star Oscar nominee Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) and be directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla). The other news: Looper director Rian Johnson has officially been confirmed as director of Star Wars: Episode VIII, which is set for release on May 26, 2017 — forty years (and one day) after the release of the original Star Wars film in 1977.

The rumor that Johnson was signed on to direct the next two films in the series dates back to last June, but now it's made official.

The news was posted on StarWars.com, and Johnson immediately took to Twitter to crack wise.

I can FINALLY officially announce that the rumors were true... yes, I will be a GUEST VOICE ON S2 of @BoJackHorseman! Thrilled beyond words.
— Rian Johnson (@rianjohnson) March 12, 2015

Johnson is a well respected writer-director who's already built a sci-fi following because of 2012's Looper, and he was also the director on three episodes of Breaking Bad, "Fly", "Fifty-One", and "Ozymandias," the latter which was named the best in the series overall by series creator Vince Gilligan.

Back in 2012 when Disney snapped up Lucasfilm for $4 billion, George Lucas said that he was ready to pass along the Star Wars franchise to "the next generation of filmmakers." Episode Seven of the franchise, the first to be made by Disney with Lucas only as consultant, titled Star Wars: The Force Awakens, comes out December 18. It's directed by J.J. Abrams and stars Lupita Nyong'o and Girls' Adam Driver, with Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill all reprising their original roles. See that trailer below.

As for the title of the stand-alone feature, Rogue One, which will be written by About a Boy screenwriter Chris Weitz and is due out in December 2016, Rogue One is what Luke Skywalker was called in The Empire Strikes Back.

Now, you might look at the newest trailer for San Andreas, the earthquake-focused film shot in San Francisco (among other places) last summer and assume that it is the standard goofball disaster film, the 2012 for the 2015 set. But you would be wrong, my friends. Oh, so wrong.

According to San Andreas star Dwayne Johnson (who, for the rest of this post, I will refer to "The Rock" the way some of you still call "Cesar Chavez Street" "Army Street"), the movie is way more than just shit blowing up/falling apart, as it is based in science!

"Our goal was to make a movie that was highly entertaining," The Rock tells his Instagram followers, "but weighted with quality from years of work and research." Years, you guys! The Rock was in a lab or a library or something for years!

Discussing his character "Chief Pilot Ray Gaines," The Rock describes it as the "#RoleOfALifetime," which worries me because the last thing we need is for The Rock to go all "the craft of acting" on us. Then again, that is an Inside The Actors Studio I wouldn't mind watching. "Dwayne. Tell us the role baby oil plays in your preparation for a part?"

San Andreas is set to hit theaters on May 29. Until then, enjoy watching San Francisco, and the rest of California, fall to pieces!

The movie, tentatively titled Jobs, will be directed by Joshua Michael Stern and written by Matt Whiteley. It will center around Jobs's life "from his relatively wayward youth to his involvement in the creation of Apple," notes NYT.

Variety says filming will begin in May.

For many Apple fans, Kutcher as Jobs is downright terrifying, bordering on heresy. Only a reincarnate of Laurence Olivier would be suitable casting for some Mac sect members. Then again, as you can see, Jobs and Kutcher are pretty similar appearance-wise. It could be a brilliant choice. Or it could be another The Butterfly Effect. The last actor to portray the former Apple cofounder was ER's Noah Wylie in the 1999 docudrama Pirates of Silicon Valley.

More importantly, who will play Woz?

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in Oakland Tonight

Benjamin Button and Salt will jack up your Monday commute in Oakland tonight.
Jan Wahl, the greatest wide-brim hat wearing Bay Area on-air talent of all time, gives Sacha Baron Cohen's , the film version of his popular fictional gay Austrian fashion reporter, a dismal review. Claiming that it enforces stereotypes of gay men, Wahl chides the satire for its "gross-out sex jokes," saying that it "will cause all kinds of bad things to children who are already bullied. ... it will cause real problems that we will not hear about and will not happen in the Bay Area." Which, yes, it will be a rich source of material insofar as playground taunting goes. Anyway, Wahl goes on to give the film no hats. "NO hats?!?!" the stunned KCBS reporter exclaims. That's right, no hats.
