Modern Times Bookstore Claims Moth Spray Will, In Fact, Continue

Contrary to what court rulings say about the halting of the light brown apple moth spray, Modern Times Bookstore's recent window dressing claims otherwise. According to our pals over at Curbed, "[T]his posted propaganda [says the] CDFA will still continue to spray outside of the city— within 10 miles." SO, if you believe what a bookstore window is telling you, head for the hills. The deadly mist might make a return. (Curbed)

Light Brown Apple Moth (LBAM) Spraying Off

Today, the California Department of Food and Agriculture announced plans to stop light brown apple moth spraying altogether. While the spray was temporarily halted in April, it now looks like the use of the pesticide is officially off. Yay! The light brown apple moth, which feasts on crops, and the people of Santa Cruz county will no longer have to fear the toxic spray.

City Attorney Dennis Herrera says that "the state's aerial spray program has been a dead man walking since April," going on to say that he "intend[s] to continue to work closely with other public law offices throughout the Bay Area to monitor LBAM eradication plans in the event legal action becomes necessary to protect public health and safety."

What's more, according to CBS 5, state and federal officials say that they will instead release sterile moths to target the hungry moths. Three cheers for sterilization!

Mr. Brock,

While I appreciate your coverage of the spray situation I don't appreciate the stereotyping and blatant prejudice against people who become ill from being around cologne.(chemicals, paint, new carpeting car exhaust etc etc) Multiple Chemical Sensitivity is recognized by the ADA and for people who have it, it isn't a joke, it's a nightmare. The sad thing is many people with mcs moved to Santa Cruz for the (once) clean air and now are threatened by the spray. Please educate yourself.

Light Brown Apple Moth Spray Off

Today a major setback struck the final solution, if you will, against the light brown apple moth. Superior Court Judge Paul Burdick ruled that "aerial pesticide sprays must halt over Santa Cruz County until agricultural officials do a full environmental review of their anti-pest program." Even California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, after chitchating with lawmakers and environmentalists, put his foot down, saying that "the state would suspend all aerial sprays across the state until Aug. 17."

Meanwhile, Santa Cruz County spokeswoman Dinah Phillips actually thinks today's ruling will stop aerial spraying for at least a year. Cool.

According to CBS 5, "hundreds of people complained of feeling sick when planes applied the first round of spray along the central coast last fall." (To be fair, people in Santa Cruz also fake aneurysms if you're wearing a drop of cologne, so...take that with a healthy grain of rock salt.) Anyway, the U.S. Department of Food and Agriculture says that they may go ahead with the areal assault, ruling be damned, since "the moth threatens to destroy millions of dollars' worth of valuable crops."

Gay mafia don, Marke B., has word that the Powerblouse (TM 71Miles) is hosting a prom night for all of you homosexuals who weren't able to attend your senior prom. The theme is "Leather & Lace." Steamy.

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, we should mention, are hosting this night under to remember. Proceeds from the night go to raise funds to fight the proposed butterfly-killing spray that will soon blanket San Francisco, or whatever it is that people are currently wringing their hands hysterically.

Anyway, it will be a fun night of getting dolled up, getting smashed, and avoiding/trespassing the Powerhouse's notorious back room. Dress to the nines and strap on your boot flasks, kids. See you at the prom.
