Each Tuesday we will feature new music that should (or whatever) be on your radar. Standouts: British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music?: We were first introduced to British Sea Power when we were checking out the bands that are coming to the Noise Pop Festival (which we remind you is in two weeks). It's being heralded as the "...first contender for Album of 2008." Not bad, for this indie-rock band from Brighton,......

Morrissey is coming. And you know what that means? Clever lyrics, melancholia, and no tender morsels of tasty beef. Or chicken. Or even a Hot Pocket. Last month Leah Garchik mentioned that, "word from the Fillmore, where Morrissey is doing four shows at the end of September: 'Do not bring any meat to eat. He wants no meat whatsoever in the house!'" While we teeter on respecting the (privileged) choices of vegetarianism and veganism,......

-- The A’s: Oakland play at home against the Baltimore Orioles. Game starts at 7:05 p.m. at McAfee Coliseum; $9-$44. -- "Blow-Up": DJ Jefrodisiac and Emily Betty’s "indie-pop-disco-noir" (noir?) monthly dance club brings out hipsters of every ilk. But that doesn’t mean that you still can’t have a good time. Vin Sol & Morse Code, the Lovemakers (DJ set), Codebreaker, and Disco Nat make special guest appearances, and resident DJ Richie Panic and MC......

This story about the Berkeley family killed in Tilden Park by the husband over business problems is so sad. Friends of the family describe the husband, Kevin Morrissey, as "brittle," "desperate," and as having a "very controlling side," though by all accounts deeply in love with his wife. The wife, Mamiko Kawai, is described as a wonderful doctor and the two girls as adorable. The CIA will neither confirm nor deny the husband's claims that......

As noted in this week's SF Weekly and SFist Rita's "We Read the Weeklies" column, the Bay Area's (and beyond) beloved Kitchen Sink—the magazine for people who think too much—is calling it quits this spring. Kitchen Sink is the latest of several independent publications to shut down due to the Independent Press Association's failure to fulfill its commitments before going under.
Before Kitchen Sink's proverbial well runs dry, they will be producing one last issue. But they need your help to do it! Stop on by Edinburgh Castle this Saturday night for their fundraiser, which will feature lots of bands and a raffle with prizes from Amoeba, the Believer and local artisans....

One of those things you learn in rehab is to take it one day at a time (Valerie Bertinelli notwithstanding), though Valentine's Day can be one of the more excruciating days to get through, just dealing with the high schoolers on MUNI with the balloons, oversized stuffed animals and flowers alone. Difficult as it may be, remember, tomorrow it's all over and the candy is on sale. But tonight, it's the 2nd annual Pillow Fight......

We know we're saving up our money for countless Halloween-themed events this weekend, so tonight we're all about the free stuff. Funcheap SF is an e-mail newsletter that clues in the city's under-employed, bored and frugal on the best in fun and cheap stuff to do. Tonight they're hosting the Cheap Bastard Fun Happy Hour at EZ5 Bar(682 Commercial St. at Kearny near the Holiday Inn in Chinatown). The event will feature cheap happy......

This week we're giving away a night of rock n' roll debauchery. Fans of good, old-fashioned, muscular rock like T. Rex and Thin Lizzy should listen up: there's a show at Cafe Du Nord next Friday (4/21) that's right up your alley. Living Things is a band of brothers out of St Louis who really have it all: lyrics with social awareness, grimy riffs that make you move and last but not least, swagger and......

Over the last few days we've gotten phone calls from SFists Krissy and Jackson from SXSW, and both times they sounded like they were calling from the world's best party. To add insult to injury, both times we were sitting at a desk, working. While our SFists carouse and make calls, Austinist blogs away. Let's see what they've come up with in the last day or so. In music: Austinist got a hot tip......

Our concert picks for the week of 1/19-1/25. One more reason why SF is a great city for music: the feature length film about the annual Coachella music festival is showing here this week. The film showcases one song each from a long list of performers, including Bjork, Radiohead, Oasis, The Crystal Method and many more, plus acts you may not have had the chance to see live like Morrissey, Fischerspooner, Polyphonic Spree, Pixies and......

We're giving thanks today for all the great venues in San Francisco, which attract bands of all shapes, sizes and levels of fame to our fair city. Our show pick of the week is tomorrow night in Hotel Utah's tiny two-floor room with Phosphorescent and Castanets. Phosphorescent's Aw Come Aw Wry is a strong contender for our year end Top 10, and fans of Okkervil River and Neutral Milk Hotel should listen up. Sufjan Stevens'......

Is your wallet looking slim this week? Fret not; there's plenty of free music to be had. Check out any of Amoeba's stellar in-store offerings, including Prefuse 73, Zion I, locals Six Organs of Admittance, and a rare acoustic performance by Trail of Dead. Local label Six Degrees Records presents Niyaz at Virgin Megastore on Saturday at 2pm. And SFist is giving away a free copy of Citizen Cope's CD The Clarence Greenwood Chronicles (enter......

Our concert picks for the week of 3/31 - 4/6. Just when we thought the concert onslaught would never stop, it has started to slow down. Whether the aftermath has left you nursing a hangover or celebrating new musical discoveries, there's no doubt that spring has already sprung. On Thursday night, Popscene opens early to screen Morrissey's latest DVD "Who Put The 'M' In Manchester," followed by a live set by The Vacation. DNA Lounge......

Few bands can believably be compared to Joy Division, the Cure, Duran Duran, and Echo and the Bunnymen. Especially if they are from Las Vegas. Yet The Killers, the newest indie dance sensation, not only consistently elicit such comparisons, they actually seem to live up to them. With only one major label release under their belts, the Killers were picked up by Morrissey to headline his band earlier this year. Why all the attention......
