Residents Held At Gunpoint During Mission District Home Invasion
Yikes. Several Mission District residents were held at gunpoint on Wednesday night during a home-invasion robbery. The frightening crime, reported at around 9:30 p.m., occurred on the 1400 block of York Street. "The suspects, two men believed to be in their 30s, came through the front door carrying handguns and ordered everyone inside onto the floor," notes SF Appeal. "The victims included an 18-month-old girl."
Knife Crime 2012: Another Victim Knifed For Lacking Gang Affiliation
A 42-year-old man became the latest victim of 2012's wave of knife crime after exiting a 14-Mission bus after 1 a.m. Tuesday morning. The victim was reportedly harassed by four suspects on the bus who asked for the man's gang affiliation. When the man got off the bus at 26th and Mission, the suspects followed him, punched him and then stabbed him in the chest.
Eat Here Tonight: West of Pecos
Who doesn't like a nice restaurant opening night? Those who like to eat in silence, that's who. But for those of you who prefer merriment and chatter with your digestive process, West of Pecos opens tonight. According the Eater, the food continues on the alpha-male-driven, hickory-bold path to flavor featuring "lots of meats and vegetables roasted Southwestern-style in a Wood Stone hearth." Get a rope! But seriously, it's a new venture started by brothers who link the new joint to their youthful visits to the American Southwest. Inside Scoop explains, "Set in the former Bombay Bazaar, its name is taken from Western lore, where the region west of the Pecos River was the lawless region, a no man’s land full of gunslingers, thieves and other people wearing black cowboy hats."
NoPa Is The New Mission, Says New York Publication
Hey, everybody, the New York Times has discovered San Francisco again! And this time it isn't about the Mission. Well, almost. The gray old lady sets its book-sniffing sights on NoPa — known to locals and decent human beings as "Divis," "the Panhandle," "Western Addition," or even "you know, near Alamo Square." But never, ever "NoPa." The travel piece even has the unmitigated gall to throw shade at Popeye's, claiming that it's out of place in the freshly invigorated neighborhood. Fighting words, folks. Check it:
S.F. Gay Dance Party's Confusing Pico de Gallo Racism Controversy
Hard French, El Rio's award-winning afternoon queer dance party in the Mission District, turned soft over the weekend after several of its Facebook followers (i.e., commenters) took offense to their naming their Cinco de Mayo's party "Pico de Gallo." Some daytime disco fans thought the salsa-themed title was a touch racist. For whatever reasons. Furthermore, club promoters (quite cleverly) encouraged revelers to come dressed as their favorite Pico de Gallo ingredient — e.g., tomatoes, red onion, jalapenos, garlic, etc. Intended to mock the drunk, white frat boys and brogrammers who party in the Mission wearing sombreros on May 5th, some Hard French fans took umbrage and found the entire bit culturally insensitive. Some were angered yet begged for more "dialogue". Some simply didn't care. Either way it made for interesting commentary and fist-shaking that only voices on the interwebs can muster. A few choice Facebook moments:
Photos: Sunday Streets In The Mission
Can a San Francisco afternoon be any more perfect? Here's hoping you spent the day outside, maybe at this weekend's edition of Sunday Streets in the Mission along 24th Street and Valencia. There was square dancing, drum circles, low-riders, street yoga, live bands, and more options for ice cream and popsicles than we could have imagined. Here are a few pictures of the festivities, and more pictures here.
May Day: Demonstration Shuts Down 16th & Mission [Updated]
The revolution will be Instagramed, as pictured here by Jen Ackrill, and nowhere else does that sentiment ring truer than in the heart of the city's Mission District. A May Day demonstration at 16th and Mission currently underway has effectively shut down the intersection today. Traffic is being diverted. If you plan on driving in the area... don't.
Fatal Shooting Outside Mission Dolores [Updated]
The Bay Area Reporter notes, "We're hearing reports that there has been a shooting at the Mission Dolores chapel this morning." We'll update as soon as we know more.

Mission Thought to Be Incredibly Dangerous By East Bay Folk
Many older people who reside in the East Bay (and probably elsewhere) continue to believe that the Mission is nothing but a cesspit of crime and poverty, and that "white girls shouldn't be in the Mission." It's a fascinating and dated perspective that Mission Mission shares with us today, via two separate encounters with said old people by a white girl who's looking for an apartment in the Mission. But, we suppose, people do get stabbed there, but that's happening everywhere these days.
Video: 'SF Playa' Pokes Fun At San Francisco Lifestyle
PBR, Dolores Park, Madrone, salted-caramel, guys who wear those brightly colored sunglasses, waiting in line like sheep for ice cream, start-ups, average-size penises — Chris Avery's parody rap video 'SF Playa' pokes fun at San Francisco's current state of insufferable smugness. (With nary a mention of anything gay, like the time-honored tradition of performing fellatio in the back room at the Powerhouse, we can't say it encompasses the full San Francisco-lifestyle package. But we're splitting hairs.) It also features an all-too-brief appearance from Wall-E. Good stuff. Enjoy.
Gaggle Of Teens Assault Local Blogger In Clarion Alley
Teenagers. They are horrible, hormone-rattled creature who want to cause harm. Take, for example, an alleged mugging that recently occurred in the city's Mission District. The Fog Bender reports (via Mission Mission) that, while passing through Clarion Alley the other night en route home, three teenagers assaulted and attempted to rob the noted blogger. Not cool. He writes:
7 Photos Of The New Dolores Park Playground
Did you know the new Dolores Park playground is open? Aye. And you simply must drag your snot-covered little blessing(s) to the city's favorite park to check it out. It's got everything: slides, sand, rubber safety thingamajigs, poles, a bridge, swings, and... ok, not everything. But still, it's got all you and your kids will need for a smashing day at Dolores Park. Get it while it's fresh, new, and not desecrated with PBR and fornication.
PBR, Tecate Blamed For Mission Dive-Bar Tagging
Owners of divey Mission bars where people like to tag bathroom (and exterior) walls are increasingly sad about this culture of tagging that they seem to be a part of. As Uptown Almanac reports, several have associated the rampant tagging with the fact they serve PBR and Tecate, which, we guess, attracts an unsavory element that prefers not to go north of $3 for their beer choices?
Dolores Park Celebrity Map 2012: Rachel Maddow Likes Dolores Park, Riding Muni
Formerly bespectacled Rachel Maddow loves riding Muni, the MSNBC host told Vanity Fair. She's a big fan of taking the J-Church up to "the top corner of Dolores Park" (a.k.a. "the fruit shelf," where the gays converge because it's arguably the nicest area in the park) and admiring the view.
Mission Plays Host To SF Murder No. 9 Of 2012
On Saturday Friday night, 39-year-old Ronald Monzon of Newman, CA was shot and killed in San Francisco's Mission District. SFPD responded to reports of gunfire near 23rd and Shotwell streets at 7:20 p.m. They found a man suffering from several bullet wounds inside a car. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Photo: Mark Zuckerberg Was In Dolores Park
Yuppie-hipster reduction sauce Dolores Park was filled to the rim with skin this weekend after warm temperatures brought out all kinds of denizens to the park—namely, those who loudly prefer bacon and those who loudly prefer seitan. Of the former control group, Facebook founder Mr. Mark Zuckerberg was found sunning his buns in the city's most popular park on Sunday—or so says Twitter user Jacob Sempler. Behold:
Reminder: Mission Street Muni Lines Extra Annoying, Starting Tomorrow
Attention 14-Mission and 49-Van Ness riders: much needed road repairs are coming to Mission Street starting tomorrow, Saturday March 3rd. While the busiest stretch between 16th and Cesar Chavez will be nice and smoothed-out by the end of Summer, two of the city's busiest bus lines will be running a block East on South Van Ness for the next six months.
Man Dies After Mission Mugging, Stabbing; Police Arrive 5 Hours Later
The Mission District played host to the city's 8th murder of the year after 47-year-old Richard Sprague was mugged and stabbed on Julian Avenue between 15th and 16th Streets. Mission Local report that a Sprague was attacked sometime between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. He cried out for several hours after being stabbed.
Wise Sons Opens Today
Challah! Whether hard or soft opening (ew), Wise Sons is sorta, but pretty much open for business starting today. We're being told it's a "soft" opening, so you might want to give them a call beforehand to make certain-certain that they're open before heading over to quell your bialy fix this weekend, but, whatever, they're totally open. While the grand opening will be on the 22nd, but you can absolutely still get some grub in the meantime.
24th And Mission Plays Host To Stabbing
Smack dab in the Mission District's self-consciously insouciant yet tragically posh area of 24th and Mission, a man was stabbed early this morning during an altercation. The 53-year-old male victim was hit in the lower back by a 21-year-old male suspect during a fight at around 1:30 a.m.
Medjool To Become Rooftop-Only Establishment
Fresh off of yesterday's announcement that plans are finally in the works to fix up the New Mission Theater, Mission Street tycoon Gus Murad's other holding over at Medjool announced they will be closing their massive dining room for renovations starting next Monday. The ground floor dining area (and the nightclub's dance floor, we imagine) will remain closed indefinitely, but the controversial roof deck will stay open for food and beverage service while the renovations are underway.
Woman Critically Injured During Mission Hit-Run
A 47-year-old woman suffered life-threatening injures after being hit at Mission and 13th Streets on Monday. According to SF Appeal, "The truck left the scene afterward but was stopped in the city's Ingleside neighborhood a short time later, and its 54-year-old driver was taken into custody on suspicion of hit-and-run, according to [SFPD's Sgt. Daryl] Fong."
Eating Taqueria La Cumbre's Nacho Burrito
More taquerias should be inspired by Taco Bell. No, not by the fast-food chain's suspect ingredients or testosterone-fueled ad campaigns, but for the unique gastronomic constructs that Taco Bell uses to produce their food-like menu items. Take, for example, this (delicious) monstrosity filled with Fritos. Taqueria La Cumbre on Valencia Street recently started making something sorta, kinda, barely similar: Nachos in a Roll (i.e., a tortilla chip-stuffed burrito), a treat brought to our attention by noted neighborhood blog, Mission Mission. See, for only $5, you can get nachos stuffed inside a flour tortilla with either grilled chicken, steak or vegetarian along with beans, cheese guacamole, sour cream, and salsa. So basically a burrito with chips inside. And yet? Much more.
Duh, Of Course The Mission's Streaker Was Wearing Converse [PHOTO]
Mission Mission brings our attention to something of the utmost importance this morning: a Converse All Stars-sporting hipster streaker caught by SFPD on Thursday night. An especially brave move seeing as how last night's weather almost dipped down to freezing levels. Anyway, we're thrilled he's wearing Mission denizens' favorite choice in footwear. It made us wonder what other neighborhood locals would wear if, through a combination of drugs and alcohol (or so we assume), they too went streaking in the night.
Woman Assaulted, Robbed By Man She Met At Nightclub
Like a scene out of Sweet Charity, a 30-year-old woman was punched and robbed last night in the Mission after meeting what she thought was a nice man at a nightclub. SF Examiner breathlessly reports: "As they were walking, the faux Don Juan dipped his grubby mitts into the victim’s purse, police said. When she asked him what he was doing, he punched her in the face and ran off with the purse." The incident happened at Hidalgo Terrace and Dolores a little before 2:30 a.m.
Nobody Shot At 16th And Valencia
Around 12:50 a.m. last night a 911 caller reported six to nine shots fired at the intersection of 16th and Valencia in the Mission. Police checking out the scene found six bullet casings, but unlike countless random shootings at 16th and Mission a block over not a single person was reportedly hit by the gunfire.
