Mission District Stabbing

Early this morning around 1a.m., a man was stabbed on 22nd and Bartlett. The victim, who was "found wounded and taken to San Francisco General Hospital," is expected to live. Police arrested a man in connection with the stabbing. (CBS 5/BCN)

Taqueria Closed

The benevolent folks at Mission Mission report that Taqueria Cancun is closed. Further reports indicate that the oddly popular taco joint is closed temporarily, due to a water pipe break. Fortunately, you can get the same slop at any number of other taquerias littering San Francisco's Mission district. Crisis averted! (via MM, Eater)

While pulling over at 19th Street and South Van Ness to "adjust something in the trunk of her car," a woman was kidnapped and robbed by a passing driver a little around 4:30 a.m. this morning. According to CBS 5/BCN, "[a] pickup truck pulled up next to her and a man inside forced her into the cabin of his vehicle ... drove her around for a few minutes before taking her purse, stopping the truck and forcing her to get out" a mile away. She was uninjured. No arrests have been made.

Man Charged In Papa Potrero's Pizza Shooting Deaths

Of the three men arrested in connection with Sunday's Papa Potrero's shooting death, San Francisco prosecutors charged a 19-year-old Andres Siordia with one count of murder. If you recall, the double shooting, which is alleged to have stemmed from friction between "separate factions of the Norteno street gang," claimed the lives of SF residents Francisco Pena, 41, and Francisco Cornejo, 26.

Yelp Shakedown: Humphry Slocombe

Eater brings us word that Mission district ice cream it girl Humphry Slocombe experienced its very first Yelp bullying. (Aw. You always remember your first.) Humphry Slocombe's Twitter message describes the assault: "Our 1st Yelper shakedown! Yelp girls to me: 'We're gonna order then yelp about it-what discount can you give us?' Me: 'Your joking right?'" The Yelp girls were immediately clocked across the face, then tossed out of the establishment. OK, not really. Because that would be mean and illegal. But, wow, that's pretty ballsy, Yelpers. Hopefully, Humphry Slocombe gave them the boot. Shameless, people. Really. That said, any other local business out there experience this kind of abuse from (alleged) Yelp users? If so, did you cave in?

Mission Plays Host to Shooting

While new residents continue to pull their hair out over graffiti getting painted over with more graffiti, actual crime hurting real-life people reigns supreme in the Mission. Take, for example, a shooting that occurred in the neighborhood late last night. Over at 25th and Florida, according to SF Appeal/BCN, "[o]ne man was shot and taken to a local hospital to be treated for an injury that did not appear to be life-threatening." No suspects have been arrested.

Best Burger, Vegan?

The fine folks at Vegansaurus are dripping with glee after finding the best burger in San Francisco. And best or worst of all, it's vegan. "[T]his is the best burger I have ever had, of any kind. SRSLY," squeals Vegansaurus' Megan Allison.

Zeitgeist, Manliest Restaurant?

Eye On Blogs brings this poll to our attention. Asylum, a gentlemen's online magazine that features articles like "10 Things You Should Never Say to a Girl With Huge Boobs" and "Look Glourious in Brad Pitt's Crisply Caribbean White Suit," came up with the top four manliest restaurants in the U.S. San Francisco, strangely enough, made the list, snatching the best-in-the-west title with the Mission district's Zeitgeist.

In an attempt to get in on the hyperlocal (ugh, that word) trend, glossy rag interviewed pretty people about their favorite places to go in specific San Francisco neighborhoods. Above, Mission district fans prattle on about Revolution Cafe, Beauty Bar, and a bench.

What's the Name of Your Movie. Mission Film Shoot?

SFist Jonathan sent us this image of some sort of movie shoot happening in the Mission today. He explains, "There's a huge film shoot setting up on Valencia between 20th and 21st -- like 6 trucks, 2 motor homes, huge generators, scads of crews running around." Glamorous!

Behold the Painted Traffic Control Boxes of the Mission

The fine folks over at Mission Mission came across these images of painted boxes in the part of the Mission district, along the lower half of 24th Street. You like? They've been in the area for almost a year care of Precita Eyes.

It's Official: Flour + Water Is a Smash

SF Chronicle food critic Michael Bauer swoons over the Mission's newest pizza joint, Flour + Water, located at 2401 Harrison. Bauer beams, "Made third visit to Flour+Water ; tastes as if they've been making pizza for years. Perfecto! Review to come in a couple weeks." Now for the bad news: SFist called Flour + Water to see if we could swing by to grab a slice or four for lunch. No such luck. "We don't serve pizza by the slice or to-go," the sympathetic F + W employee explained. Alas, select Mission residents, this new artisan world just isn't big enough for you.

Local crooners My First Earthquake shot a video to their new single,"Cool in the Cool Way." More or less, it's a song about hipsters. And, appropriately enough, they filmed it in SF's Mission District, a neighborhood brimming with much-maligned hip folks. The video, it seems, is an anti-hipster ode. Or it sympathizes with them. Or it's tongue-in-cheek. Or it's a meta-hipster statement that will make the universe implode upon repeated viewing. (Notions of cool aside, lead songstress Rebecca Bortman is gorgeous. She, like most women and several men, probably looks even more amazing in high heels while throwing back vodka shots at the Razz Room.)

Despite the searing chill in the air, the annual Carnaval festival in the Mission was a vibrant smash. Noted photog Ted Weinstein captured the color and glorious garishness of yesterday's Carnaval parade. (Seriously, these are some amazing images Weinstein snapped up.)

SF Sex Club To Hopefully Re-Open Soon

Power Exchange, the 13-year-old sex club formerly located at 72 Otis that shutdown last year due to financial difficulties, wanted to open again, this time at 44 Gough. All was going according to plan, until one perturbed citizen, Lisa Dunmeyer, a Brady Street resident, put the kibosh on the popular humping space. It seems that said sex club (allegedly) attracted an unsavory crowd, one that would embarrass her in front of her guests. "When she had friends over," reports Mission Local, "they couldn’t believe the action. Cars circled the block blasting music, and prostitutes walked up and down the street."

12 Galaxies to Become 'Blue Macaw' Restaurant

According to Tablehopper, 12 Galaxies will go from affectedly creative Mission nightspot to affectedly chic Mission restaurant. She reports, "Moving into the 12 Galaxies space in the Mission will be the ~BLUE MACAW~, a restaurant, bar, and club with a focus on international music. I will have more details in a few weeks, but the opening is slated for April or May."

School-Aged Boys Hiding the Pickle?

As Mission Mission reported last week, Mr. Pickle (beloved mascot of Mr. Pickle's Sandwich Shop's) was stolen. But according to Eye On Blogs, the has thickened. Diane, employee at said shop, tells EOB that "someone told her that two school-aged boys took it away on a skateboard. But that isn't much to go on. And then she said someone called to ask if Mr. Pickle was still missing and when she said that he was the the caller laughed a mischievous laugh, then hung up. Diane said she thinks that is the thief." Wait, skateboarders?! They get blamed for everything. Seriously. This has the stink of cover-up all over it. It reeks of it. Stay tuned.

Save Medjool?

Winner of Eater's coveted Douchiest Bars In San Francisco Award, controversial Mission Street bar Medjool is in danger of being closed down. The SF Planning Department wants to yank the permits for the bar's rooftop terrace -- the city's only rooftop bar. And if the rooftop bar closes, the entire place will inevitably fold. According to SF Weekly, an "e-campaign" is in the works in the form of a Facebook page called "SAVE MEDJOOL" is currently recruiting members. (An aside: If anyone wants to give it a try, a "CLOSE MEDJOOL" Facebook page would probably get the even more followers.) While most of you squee in delight at the thought of Medjool shuttering, this would also mean 60 hard-working employees will be out of a job.

Cesar Chavez Redesign Workshop Tonight

Sir Allan Hough I has word that tonight is the night to voice your feelings on making Cesar Chavez Street not suck. And while we know many a Missionite is adverse to change, we can all agree that Army/Cesar Chavez is unattractive and depressing. And if there's one cure for unattractive and depressing in San Francisco, it's boutique shops, eco-friendly center divides, and anti-homeless park benches.

What's Going On Here, Sk8ter Boi?

Our hero.

Drive-By in the Mission?

Mission Mission has word that there might have been a drive-by shooting on Capp Street last night.

American Apparel Apologizes

OK. We lied. THIS will be our final American Apparel post. We know we said otherwise, but you'll thank us when you find out why we're bringing up the beleaguered retail chain one last time. See, after an Oskar Schindler-like awakening, the fine folks over at American Apparel are offering up a mea culpa in the form of a 25%-discount to any and all Mission residents at any of their SF American Apparel stores. (What, no love for LoRi residents? Pft.) Mission Mission has more details.

Bree, Let Us Take You Out and Show You the Real SF

Even when obvious troll is obvious, readers still wring their hands and pull their hair. Take, for example, brilliant Curbed commenter "Bree" from OC. See, Bree, who is the unofficial mascot of SFist until further notice, allegedly hails from Orange County and would like to know where in SF she and her fetch friends can live on the cheap in la Mission. In a heated American Apparel post, Bree asks for Frisco's help.

What with Bush leaving office and local ire having no direct target, layoffs continuing to abound, and the recession devolving into something worse, American Apparel setting up shop on Valencia Street created the perfect storm for a surprising amount of anger on both sides of the argument.

American Apparel Meeting at City Hall

Since your editor is too busy looking for somebody with a vagina who likes other vaginas to take with him to Orson this evening, he couldn't possibly make it to City Hall. (All those Missionites? Heavens no. We just bathed.) But Mission Mission is reporting live from the scene. Allan Hough starts of by describing the scene leading up to room Room 400 at City Hall.

Valencia Street: You Have Nothing to Lose But Your Chains

We were happy to find a photo of ourselves -- or is it "ourself"? -- on Flickr the day after we went down to Ritual Roasters to type a letter registering our disapproval of chain stores on Valencia Street.

American Apparel Protest on Saturday, 1/31

The fine folks over at Pirate Cat Radio have organized a rally this Saturday to protest American Apparel's plan to open a clothing store on Valencia Street. (Maybe you've heard about it?)

Elite Shuns "Big Box" American Apparel Store on Valencia

In what's being billed as the retail "hipster wars" of the Mission, 988 Valencia will soon call sleaze designer American Apparel home. That is, if the scraggly elite of the Mission get their way. Local scribe and former prostitute Stephen Elliott is none too thrilled about this "chain store" opening up, going on to clarify the following at stopamericanapparel.wordpress.com.
