Speaking of Boing Boing, they have word that Electronic Frontier Foundation - the "first line of defense" in our right to free speech, privacy, awesome innovation, and consumer rights - is having a birfday party. For those of you unfamiliar with EFF, ahem:

  • Laughing Squid’s Last Minute Unholiday Party: Scott Beale and the gang will be having a most splendid post- and un-holiday party/experiment with social media. Although LS will be "providing some beer and buying pizza, but please feel free to bring some more beer, wine, leftover holiday food, etc." The mood is low-key and geek-filled, and we mean that in the best possible way. Starts at 7 p.m. at Citizen Space.
  • Ben-Hur (1959): Not only did this William Wyler-directed epic saga about a Jewish prince sold into slavery (and something or other about bare chests and chariot racing) win a record-breaking 11 Oscars, but finely-aged ham Charlton Heston also picked up the best actor award for it, too. See, miracles really do happen. Screens tonight at 7 p.m. at The Castro Theatre; $6-9
  • Barracuda: (Now, wouldntcha?) DJs Damon, Heiko, and Phillie Ocean turn what could be an ordinary '80s night into something extraordinary. Chic, rather than humorous or ironic, '80s attire is highly encouraged. The beats go from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. at 111 Minna Gallery; $5-10.

-- "Punk Rock Karaoke": Damnit all to hell. We can't believe that we have to miss this: members of the Adolescents, Bad Religion, and NOFX perform live while "singers" drunkenly slur along, karaoke-style. But you shouldn't miss it! Starts tonight at 9 p.m. at 111 Minna Gallery; $10.

Ever think of starting your own crafty business? Want to meet a bunch of people who have, including a local author who wrote a book on the topic? Or maybe you just want to surround yourself with booze and cute people? Whatever your flavor, head downtown to 111 Minna tomorrow night for the book-launch party of Craft, Inc. by Meg Mateo Ilasco. The party is being hosted by Rare Device, a hip housewares store in Brooklyn, which will open its doors on Market Street at the end of the month.

The first-ever San Francisco Great Gorilla Run is set to take place Sunday, June 10th in Golden Gate Park. It's a 7K race that benefit's the world's last remaining mountain gorillas. And you get to keep the gorilla suit!

At the behest of those who know better, we skipped the decidedly lame Media Bistro mixer occupying half of 111 Minna Gallery for the Dirt Press lauch party situated on the other side of the space. Founded in Brooklyn, circa 2003, as a collaborative effort between a small cache of artists and writers, Dirt Press began as an online journal of arts and letters, published thrice yearly. The entire operation became bi-coastal following Editor-in-Chief Su Hwang's move to San Francisco—hence our celebration of Dirt: Volume One, the first printed compilation of issues previously published online.

Our concert picks for the week of 3/31 - 4/6.

We've already broken our New Year's resolution to not be late anymore, but we can still rally to see more live music in '05. Things remain a bit askew during this first week of January (holiday parties are still happening?) but there are many musical options if you need to get out and about. Or as those kooky Canadians like to say, oot and aboot.

That time of month again, and this time we'll suggest the following shows for a little art therapy:
