That LGBT documentary mini-series that <a href="http://sfist.com/2015/12/31/dustin_lance_black_and_gus_van_sant.php">we told you about a few months back</a>, <em>When We Rise</em>, has been shooting in recent weeks in Vancouver — most notably, they just shot parts of the White Night riot, Cleve Jones noted on Facebook last week. The show, written by <em>Milk</em> writer Dustin Lance Black, is set to air on ABC later this year in eight parts, and several will focus on San Francisco's role in the fight for LGBT civil rights.</p>

<p>Now, as <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10154178757692042&amp;set=a.10150554877042042.402528.722712041&amp;type=3">Jones announced yesterday</a>, they're seeking extras for location shoots here in the city — which for some who were here back in 2008 will <a href="http://sfist.com/2008/03/10/milk_wraps_up_s.php">call to mind the <em>Milk</em> shoots</a>, in which many locals came out in their '70's best for nighttime shoots, and the Castro was transformed complete with vintage signage and '70's cars.</p>

<div align="center"><iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fclevej%2Fposts%2F10154169349812042&amp;width=500" width="500" height="592" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowtransparency="true"></iframe></div>

<p>It's unclear what events will be shot here in SF, but they're likely to feature both City Hall and the Castro neighborhood just like the <em>Milk</em> shoot did. Shooting begins next week, and all locations are said to be BART/Muni accessible.</p>

<p>And we know that the dramatizations in the docu-series will star Guy Pearce as Jones (he was portrayed in his younger years by Emile Hirsch in <em>Milk</em>), Mary-Louise Parker as former SF public health commissioner Roma Guy, and Rachel Griffiths (<em>Six Feet Under</em>) as her wife, Diane Jones, who co-founded the Women's Building together.</p>

<p>Below, the details about the casting call, shared by Jones:<br>
</p><blockquote>- All experience levels welcome!<br>
- Seeking ALL races, genders and body types, but people with hair styles consistent with the 1970s are especially needed!<br>
- SAG-AFTRA members will be paid union rates.<br>
-We also need some folks for just 2 hours at $12.25/hour

<p>When: We will be shooting over multiple days in the last week of April and first week of May. We will schedule you for specific day(s) based on availability.</p>

<p>Where: Shoot locations will be in or near SF and reachable by Muni/Bart (parking cannot be guaranteed).</p>

<p>Time: Call times will vary by day. NOTE: Filming is an “all day” commitment, plan on spending up to 8 hours on the set — unless you sign up for a 2 hour only shift.</p>

<p>Put on your pearls and clutch hard: Starbucks has come under fire after being <a href="http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2016/03/18/the-people-v-starbucks-java-chain-accused-of-skimping-on-lattes">accused of under filling their lattes</a> in an effort to save money on milk, as KQED reports. The class action suit, filed by one San Diego resident and one San Francisco resident, claims the coffee giant "cheats purchasers by providing less fluid ounces in their lattes than represented." In fact, the suit accuses the coffee chain of under filling by approximately twenty-five percent, be it Tall, Grande, or Venti.</p>

<p>The suit goes on to say that Starbucks gets away with this by topping off the lattes with a "quarter-inch of foam," which is technically still milk, but whatever. </p>

<p>Starbucks claims the suit is without merit, adding, "If a customer is unhappy with their beverage preparation, then we are happy to remake it to their satisfaction." But for some, litigiousness comes easier than having to say "no foam, fill to the top." </p>

<p>The lawsuit seeks more than $5 million dollars in damages.</p>

<p>Far more egregious, however, is the accusation that Starbucks also cheats customers out of espresso pulls. Robert King of Auburn, California says he's been short-changed on his espresso drinks numerous times, and now he wants the company to do something about it. "I order a double-shot of Espresso and only get one-and-a-half ounces,” says King. "This is not an isolated case. It has happened at all the Starbucks I’ve gone to from Grass Valley all the way down to Elk Grove, and it’s always short."</p>

<p>Not cool, Starbucks. Not cool.</p>

<p>This isn't the first time the food and beverage industry has tried to deprive us of tastiness. If you recall, Subway got caught in a foot-long Grindr-esuqe lie, which advertised a full 12-inches <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/business/2013/01/subway-sued-over-footlongs-that-came-up-short/">but only delivered a meager 11</a>. </p>

A popular Petaluma-based dairy has issued a voluntary recall of their 2% milk.</p>

<p>Clover Stornetta Farms announced on Friday that their 2% milk may contain small pieces of plastic, and is asking customers to return the possibly-affected milk to the stores for a full refund. All the gallons, quarts, and half-gallon containers in the recall would have the expiration date of July 29.</p>

<p>"Clover Stornetta Farms' top priority is the safety of our customers," the company said in a <a href="http://www.cloverpetaluma.com/voluntary-milk-recall/">statement</a>. "For this reason we are issuing this voluntary recall out of an abundance of caution."</p>

<p>"I promise you an open and honest dialogue with this voluntary recall," said Clover Stornetta CEO Marcus Benedetti.</p>

<p>Clover says the milk was distributed throughout Northern California.</p>]]></content:encoded></item><item><title><![CDATA[Marin County 'Got Milk' After Tanker Dumps 6000 Gallons On Highway 1]]></title><description><![CDATA[There was no use crying on a Marin County stretch of Highway 1 Sunday, not even after a tanker truck carrying a load of milk flipped and dumped its payload all over.]]></description><link>https://sfist.com/2015/04/27/marin_county_got_milk_after_tanker/</link><guid isPermaLink="false">5c242fa244ad066cdcf8a5c7</guid><category><![CDATA[SF News]]></category><category><![CDATA[CHP]]></category><category><![CDATA[collisions]]></category><category><![CDATA[highway 1]]></category><category><![CDATA[Marin County]]></category><category><![CDATA[milk]]></category><category><![CDATA[nick's cove]]></category><dc:creator><![CDATA[Eve Batey]]></dc:creator><pubDate>Mon, 27 Apr 2015 12:10:00 GMT</pubDate><media:content url="https://img.sfist.com/assets_c/2015/04/milk-214969_640-thumb-640xauto-890165.jpg" medium="image"/><content:encoded><![CDATA[<img src="https://img.sfist.com/assets_c/2015/04/milk-214969_640-thumb-640xauto-890165.jpg" alt="Marin County 'Got Milk' After Tanker Dumps 6000 Gallons On Highway 1"><p><span class="mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image" style="display: inline;"> </span></p>

<p>There was no use crying on a Marin County stretch of Highway 1 Sunday, not even after a tanker truck carrying a load of milk flipped and dumped its payload all over.</p>

<p><a href="http://kron4.com/2015/04/26/caltrans-working-to-clean-up-milk-diesel-spill-on-highway-1-in-marin-county/">According to Bay City News</a>, California Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of an overturned tanker truck <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/place/Nick's+Cove,+23240+CA-1,+Marshall,+CA+94940/@38.19938,-122.920658,15z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x8085d29357a36e13:0xf19889315edf9c02">about a mile north of Nick's Cove</a> on Highway 1 at around 11:45 Sunday morning.</p>

<p>When they arrived, they realized that the truck had dumped about 6000 gallons of milk in the solo crash, and 100 gallons of diesel fuel. </p>

<p>According to Marin County Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Giannini, it's believed that the driver was traveling too fast as he entered a turn, causing the truck to overturn. He suffered minor injuries in the crash, and was transported to the hospital.</p>

<p>Firefighters used absorbent materials to sop up the spilled liquids, and kept an eye on the spill to make sure it didn't threaten Bay waters.</p>

<p>Another truck arrived to transport an additional 4000 gallons of milk that managed to stay in the tanker, Giannini <a href="http://abc7news.com/news/highway-1-in-marin-reopens-after-truck-overturns-spilling-milk/682725/">told BCN</a>. <p>Today's Niners gem comes from <a href="http://sfhcbasc.blogspot.com/2012/01/it-came-from-photo-morgue-san-francisco.html">What's On The 6th Floor</a>, the blog for the <a href="http://www.sfpl.org/index.php?pg=0200002501">San Francisco History Center</a> and <a href="http://www.sfpl.org/index.php?pg=0200000201">Book Arts and Special Collections</a>. And what a collection it is. This week they came across an interesting snapshot of '50s-era 49ers teammates taking a break with an unfortunately-named milk in the locker room after training practice. </p>

<p><a href="http://sfhcbasc.blogspot.com/2012/01/it-came-from-photo-morgue-san-francisco.html">What's On The 6th Floorz</a> has more:</p>

<blockquote>In honor of the big game between the <a href="http://sfist.com/2012/01/16/daisy_does_the_niners_sfs_emotional.php">San Francisco 49ers and the New Orleans Saints</a> [on Saturday], I decided to browse through the "Football. San Francisco 49ers." folder in the San Francisco News-Call Bulletin Photo Morgue. The photographs depict the football players practicing at training camp in Menlo Park and St. Mary's College, tackling at Kezar Stadium, and posing at the San Francisco Airport. This locker room photograph was the favorite find of the day: the San Francisco 49ers drinking "Homo" milk from <a href="http://sflib1.sfpl.org:82/search/d?SEARCH=Businesses+Spreckels+russell">Spreckels-Russell Dairy Company</a>. Of course, homo is short for homogenized. </blockquote>

FuncheapSF adds in parentheses that they've never seen the rule enforced though. </p>]]></content:encoded></item><item><title><![CDATA[Sean Penn to Lobby For 'Harvey Milk Day' In California]]></title><description><![CDATA[State Senator Mark Leno and <a href="http://sfist.com/2009/02/23/sean_penns_oscar_speech.php">Sean Penn</a> plan to reintroduce a bill Tuesday to mark Harvey Milk's birthday as a "day of significance"...]]></description><link>https://sfist.com/2009/03/02/sean_penn_to_lobby_for_harvey_milk/</link><guid isPermaLink="false">5c24328744ad066cdcfa19e1</guid><category><![CDATA[SF News]]></category><category><![CDATA[Harvey Milk]]></category><category><![CDATA[harvey milk day]]></category><category><![CDATA[Mark Leno]]></category><category><![CDATA[milk]]></category><category><![CDATA[SF Politics]]></category><dc:creator><![CDATA[Brock Keeling]]></dc:creator><pubDate>Mon, 02 Mar 2009 15:10:29 GMT</pubDate><media:content url="https://img.sfist.com/assets_c/2009/03/jihadispicolivans-thumb-640xauto-67640.jpg" medium="image"/><content:encoded><![CDATA[<img src="https://img.sfist.com/assets_c/2009/03/jihadispicolivans-thumb-640xauto-67640.jpg" alt="Sean Penn to Lobby For 'Harvey Milk Day' In California"><p></p>

<p>State Senator Mark Leno and <a href="http://sfist.com/2009/02/23/sean_penns_oscar_speech.php">Sean Penn</a> plan to reintroduce a bill Tuesday to mark Harvey Milk's birthday as a "day of significance" across California. The folks from <a href="http://sfist.com/2008/06/16/sfist_calls_fred_phelps_gets_his_ta.php">God Hates Fags ilk</a>. Yep, they showed up in full regalia last night, coagulating at the corner of Sunset Blvd. and Highland Ave. They even managed to garner a cocked eyebrow from Sean Penn during his <a href="http://sfist.com/2009/02/23/sean_penns_oscar_speech.php">acceptance speech</a>. </p>

<p>According to reports, these mentally- and spiritually-challenged folks showed up to picket homosexuals, but also managed to get in digs at President Barack Obama and the economy. And seeing as how SFist has been so <a href="http://sfist.com/search?cx=001614944843134777762:b_fobmtn1w4&amp;cof=FORID:9&amp;q=prop+8&amp;sa=GO%3F#814">anti-prop 8</a> as of late, it's only fair to give the anti-gay marriage folk a turn. </p>

<p>But, like any good Hollywood-spun tale, a hero emerged in the form of two noble Marines who counterprotested the crazy-hate. Enjoy.</p>]]></content:encoded></item><item><title><![CDATA[Sean Penn's Oscar Speech]]></title><description><![CDATA[Since most of you think you're too smart to watch the Academy Awards, do let us cram them down your throat this morning. <p>Since most of you think you're too smart to watch the Academy Awards, do let us cram them down your throat this morning. Especially since <a href="http://sfist.com/2009/02/23/sean_penn_wins_oscar_for_playing_ha.php">San Francisco got a major tip of the hat at last night's "excellence in cinema" awards orgy</a>. </p>

<p>Here were have Penn's acceptance speech for Best Actor in <em><a href="http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5j0EWo18yS94MkCGws4dthh-SZIsQD96HAK980">Milk</a></em>. And, really, it's kind of cool. In addition to making a plea <a href="http://www.stop8.org">for gay rights</a>, the local thespian gives a brilliant shout out to the "<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photography123/3301777433/in/pool-laist-photos">signs of hatred</a>" taht attendees saw as their Prius and SUV Hybrids approached the Kodak Theater. </p>

<blockquote>Thank you. <strong>Thank you. You commie, homo-loving sons-of-guns</strong>. I did not expect this, but I, and I want it to be very clear, that I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me often. But I am touched by the appreciation and I hoped for it enough that I did want to scribble down, so I had the names in case you were commie, homo-loving sons-of-guns, and so I want to thank my best friend, Sata Matsuzawa. My circle of long-time support, Mara, Brian, Barry and Bob. The great <a href="http://www.clevejones.com">Cleve Jones</a>. Our wonderful writer, <a href="http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=97245530">Lance Black</a>. Producers Bruce Cohen and Dan Jinks.

<p>And particularly, as all, as actors know, our director either has the patience, talent and restraint to grant us a voice or they don't, and it goes from the beginning of the meeting, through the cutting room. And there is no finer hands to be in than <a href="http://sfist.com/2007/11/19/gus_van_sant_ha.php">Gus Van Sant</a>. <strong>And finally, for those, two last finallies, for those who saw the signs of hatred as our cars drove in tonight, I think that it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren's eyes if they continue that way of support</strong>.</p>

<p>The shirt, suit, and tie donned by Sean Penn in Gus Van Sant's Milk will be <a href="http://broadwayworld.com/article/Shirt_Suit_Tie_Worn_by_Penn_in_MILK_to_Be_Auctioned_Off_Online_for_Charity_20090209">auctioned off online</a> to benefit <a href="http://www.varietysocal.org">Variety - the Children's Charity of Southern California</a> and the <a href="http://www.hmi.org">Hetrick-Martin Institute</a>, home of the Harvey Milk High School. Danny Glicker's created the outfit especially for Van Sant's Harvey Milk biopic. The scene in which it is worn recreates the ensemble "November 7th, 1978, the Election Night on which he celebrated the statewide defeat of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Briggs_Initiative">Proposition 6.</a>"</p>

<p>The shirt is blue and approximately 16 33/4. The suit is gray and about a 40R. It comes with a lovely royal blue tie with a light blue/gray diamond pattern, and decorative pin of sorts. The bidding is currently underway, starting at $1,000. But, no one has bid on it yet. </p>

<p>We bet it would get more bids if they plan on not washing it.</p>

<p>A group that bills itself as the <a href="http://www.co.marin.ca.us/depts/hh/main/hs/CHPS/BF/MBC.cfm">Marin Breastfeeding Coalition</a> has started an unusual campaign in Marin County to get women to breastfeed their babies. In the next coming weeks, life-sized cardboard cutouts of woman breastfeeding will be put up across the North Bay, with cutouts of the making their debut this week at The Village shopping center in Corte Madera. (To check out images of the ads, go <a href="http://media.nbcbayarea.com/images/300*200/breastfeeding01.jpg">here</a> and <a href="http://media.nbcbayarea.com/images/300*450/breastfeeding03.jpg">here</a>.)</p>

<p>Lactation consultant and coalition member <a href="http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/Lactating-Women-Getting-Second-Looks-in-Marin.html">Susan Martinelli had this to say</a>: </p>

<blockquote>"Breastfeeding is recognized as the standard for infant feeding by all major health organizations ... milk provides the best nutritional, immunological and emotional nurturance for the normal growth and development of babies. No manufactured formula offers anything close."</blockquote>

<p>What's more, breastfeeding<a href="http://www.breastfeedyourwaythin.com/"> keeps you thin</a>. Or so we hear.</p>

<p>While this sounds like a nifty campaign -- although we must remember that not all babies can suck from their mother's tit, so no shame to the mommies out there who do not breastfeed -- it does have a disturbing disclaimer. Each cut-out figure has a sign that reads, "When breastfeeding is accepted, it won’t be noticed."</p>

<p>This just isn't going to happen. If you breastfeed in public YOU need to be okay with the occasional turn of the eyes. Really, you have your boob out and a baby attached to it, and although there's nothing wrong or unnatural about that, you will get looks. You will. That's just how men (and a few randy ladies) are.</p>]]></content:encoded></item><item><title><![CDATA[<i>Milk</i> Nabs 8 Oscar Nominations]]></title><description><![CDATA[Gus Van Sant's <em><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1013753/">Milk</a></em>, the biopic about slain San Francisco supervisor and gay activist Harvey Milk, was nominated for eight Oscars this morni...]]></description><link>https://sfist.com/2009/01/22/milk_nabs_8_oscar_nominations/</link><guid isPermaLink="false">5c24294f44ad066cdcf5606a</guid><category><![CDATA[SF News]]></category><category><![CDATA[academy awards]]></category><category><![CDATA[film]]></category><category><![CDATA[Harvey Milk]]></category><category><![CDATA[milk]]></category><category><![CDATA[oscars]]></category><dc:creator><![CDATA[Brock Keeling]]></dc:creator><pubDate>Thu, 22 Jan 2009 10:05:53 GMT</pubDate><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p>

<p>Gus Van Sant's <em><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1013753/">Milk</a></em>, the biopic about slain San Francisco supervisor and gay activist Harvey Milk, was nominated for eight Oscars this morning. In addition to a Best Picture nomination, <a href="http://www.ebar.com/arts/art_article.php?sec=film&amp;article=462">Dustin Lance Black</a> (Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen), Van Sant (Best Directing), Josh Brolin (Best Supporting Actor), <a href="http://sfist.com/2008/11/20/sean_penn_calls_prop_8_manslaughter.php">Sean Penn</a> (Best Actor), and Danny Elfman (Best Score) all received Oscar love. </p>

<p>The film, if you recall, was shot here in <a href="http://sfist.com/2008/01/29/tada_sean_penn.php">San Francisco</a> <a href="http://sfist.com/2008/02/05/on_the_set_sean.php">last</a> <a href="http://sfist.com/2007/11/19/gus_van_sant_ha.php">year</a>, which featured many locals in bit parts and as extras.</p>

<p>The only movie to land more nominations was that <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0421715/">long Brad Pitt movie about getting younger</a>, which scored 13 noms.</p>]]></content:encoded></item><item><title><![CDATA[San Francisco Film Critics Circle Awards <i>Milk</i>, Tomei Top Honors]]></title><description><![CDATA[The <a href="http://sffcc.org/">San Francisco Film Critics Circle</a> awarded Gus Van Sant's Harvey Milk biopic ).]]></description><link>https://sfist.com/2008/12/17/san_francisco_film_critics_circle_a/</link><guid isPermaLink="false">5c242cbd44ad066cdcf72528</guid><category><![CDATA[Arts & Entertainment]]></category><category><![CDATA[awards]]></category><category><![CDATA[film]]></category><category><![CDATA[milk]]></category><dc:creator><![CDATA[Brock Keeling]]></dc:creator><pubDate>Wed, 17 Dec 2008 14:17:24 GMT</pubDate><media:content url="https://img.sfist.com/assets_c/2008/12/entry198578_thumb-thumb-640xauto-43551.jpg" medium="image"/><content:encoded/></item><item><title><![CDATA[<i>Milk</i> + Love on 12/20]]></title><description><![CDATA[What a smashing idea. <a href="http://www.couragecampaign.org">Courage Campaign</a>, an organizing network that connects 300,000+ grassroots and "netroots" activists to push for progressive change in ...]]></description><link>https://sfist.com/2008/12/15/milk_love_on_1220/</link><guid isPermaLink="false">5c242b8f44ad066cdcf6879c</guid><category><![CDATA[SF News]]></category><category><![CDATA[film]]></category><category><![CDATA[gay]]></category><category><![CDATA[marriage]]></category><category><![CDATA[milk]]></category><category><![CDATA[prop 8]]></category><category><![CDATA[protest]]></category><category><![CDATA[same sex]]></category><dc:creator><![CDATA[Brock Keeling]]></dc:creator><pubDate>Mon, 15 Dec 2008 11:16:27 GMT</pubDate><media:content url="https://img.sfist.com/assets_c/2008/12/entry198110_thumb-thumb-640xauto-43191.jpg" medium="image"/><content:encoded><![CDATA[<img src="https://img.sfist.com/assets_c/2008/12/entry198110_thumb-thumb-640xauto-43191.jpg" alt="<i>Milk</i> + Love on 12/20"><p>What a smashing idea. <a href="http://www.couragecampaign.org">Courage Campaign</a>, an organizing network that connects 300,000+ grassroots and "netroots" activists to push for progressive change in California to get Prop 8 overturned, is getting people to host a <em><a href="http://sfist.com/tags/milk">Milk</a></em> screening in their community on the 20th, and then bring everyone straight from the screening to the candlelight vigils happening that night. It's called "<a href="http://www.couragecampaign.org/page/s/MilkPlusLove">Milk + Love.</a>" </p>

<p>So, if you or you know somebody outside the big, bad city of SF, send them this info if they want to setup a Milk screening on 12/20 in their town. Also, as an added bonus, Focus Features is handing out a bushel of "MILK" T-shirts to the Courage Campaign. If you sign up now, they will send you one as a 'thank you' for stepping up to host the event. </p>]]></content:encoded></item></channel></rss>
