-- San Mateo Bridge shuts down, then opens. Ta-da. [Examiner]
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission is all over the problem of keeping only confident, competent senior drivers on the road. It's unveiled a new video to educate both seniors and those with seniors in their lives on the risks associated with driving while aging. It's introduced by former State Senator Quentin Kopp -- himself a senior -- who, in a bold performance admits that he, too, finds himself driving slower on the freeway.
First up, bicycles! Matier & Ross are reporting that Muni is actually going to start up a program where people can rent bikes to get around. What they're thinking of is making it so any company that wants to be in the business of building our bus shelters would have to have bikes at the shelter people could rent. There's not much in the way of details or information or even plans so far, but it's something they're beginning to work on and have asked the six companies now bidding on building our bus shelter s to come up with a plan.
We apologize for being so late on this-- SFist attended that big Gavin meeting this morning and didn't get a chance to post earlier this morning. We'll review the Gavin meeting later but for now, here's the news...
You know everyone on the Muni board THINKS it, but we've really got to admire someone who actually comes out and says that they've got better stuff to worry about than busses and trains. Tom Nolan, Gavin's recent nominee for the board, has experience working for a sunshine ordinance committee, SamTrans, Caltrain, and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission; most recently, he's worked for Project Open Hand, about which he says, and we quote, "Project Open Hand is my number one priority."
The Bay Bridge's proposed single-suspension design is under attack by the Govenator. But the legislature has to approve the change to a skyway design.
Rob Stutzman, the governor's chief spokesman, says the administration will ask the Legislature to place a measure on the Nov. 2 ballot asking Bay Area voters to redirect the recent $1 toll increase, and transfer responsibility for the new bridge, as well as the rest of the toll bridge retrofitting from Caltrans to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission. Stutzman feels that "if the Bay Area wants [the bridges], the Bay Area will have to pay for it". Thank Goodness for Senator Tom Torlakson, a Democrat from Antioch. He is sticking to his guns that the state should not expect the Bay Area to pick up this monstrous tab on a state project. He also adds that Bay Area residents decided to raise the Bay Bridge toll to support other transportation projects, and not the cost of the bridge's retrofit.
