An email being sent around reads: "As you may have heard, Lyon-Martin Health Clinic is closing at the end of the business day on Thursday. Tonight we are pulling together a community meeting at 7pm at the LGBT Center, 1800 Market Street, room 301. As Eve Batey pointed out in today's SF Appeal's daily newsletter, the SF Board of Supervisors just began their special meeting to choose an interim mayor for SF, which you can watch online or on Comcast channel 26. So, you know, if you're one of the 100 or so people who care about such things, be sure to tune it. (Spoiler alert: Ed Lee will be the next mayor.)

Prop 8 Forum at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium Tonight

Speaking of Prop 8, there will be a <a href="http://mpetrelis.blogspot.com/2009/02/sf-weekly-prop-8-town-hall-could-ge...

SF News

civic center

gay marriage

meeting

prop 8

sam sex

Brock Keeling

Speaking of Prop 8, there will be a public forum tonight at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. If the mood should strike, you can attend to make your feelings heard on gay marriage and next week's California Sate Supreme Court hearing. But, you should remember, this is a public forum, and those are invariably old-fashion. And also symbolic. Typically, these kinds of forums are crowded with smash-the-state kind of Boomer and Gen X activists (compared to, say, younger activists who want to infiltrate and change the way one sees things) looking for face time and an adrenaline rush. Anyway, the meeting happens from 6:30 pm (or 6 pm) to 9 pm tonight. Be sure to check it out as it should prove entertaining if not informative.

SF Police Commission to Hold Public Hearing for New Chief

Pretending it will make a difference, the SF Police Commission will give San Franciscans the chance to voice their feelings on what they want from their newest, yet-to-be-announced Chief of Police. Heather Fong, if you recall, announced her retirement a couple of weeks ago. The commission, it seems, didn't know about her plan to turn in her badge until 45 minutes before appearing on Newsom's Cabaret Variety Hour radio show, where she made the news public. Last night's Marriage Equality Community Forum was neat! It started with a brief hello from former New Paltz mayor Jason West. We tried to get a picture, but as you can see, he is simply too dreamy and wonderful to be captured by normal photographic equipment.

The meeting was part of a statewide effort to collect data from everyone at a grassroots level. The "official" marriage activists want to compile an analysis of what went wrong and what went right. If you missed the meeting, you can still contribute -- just fill out the survey on Marriage Equality's site. Molly McKay, the forum's moderator, indicated that the report would be made public.

The evening was kicked off by some speakers: Shayna Gelender from the ACLU explained the current status of the legal challenge to Prop 8. Next, Andrea Shorter explained ... well, we're not sure. We like Andrea -- she's gentle and heartfelt -- but with all her dramatic pauses and lengthy digressions, we sometimes have trouble catching her meaning. And then finally, Sister Edith Myflesh (out of uniform!) talked about outreach. The protests were great, he said, but we need to take those demonstrations to other communities. "They need to see real queer people," he said, and mentioned an upcoming bus trip to Fresno. The audience audibly gasped.

And then, it was on with the discussions.

Marriage Equality Community Forum Tomorrow, 12/4

Apologies for coming at you at the last minute with this, but there's an important town hall meeting on the California <a href="http://sf...

SF News

gay

gay marriage

marriage

marriage equality community forum

meeting

SF Politics

prop 8

same sex

Brock Keeling

Apologies for coming at you at the last minute with this, but there's an important town hall meeting on the California gay marriage ban. Happening tomorrow. And we were only given two days' notice (and no Facebook invite! bah!) so please pardon the tardiness.

Tomorrow, December 4, the Marriage Equality Community Forum will take place in San Francisco. The goals as written on the MECF site sounds a bit too flowery and nonsensical -- "Bring our community together and restore our community to a place of well-being and positive expectation for a victory in the near future," "collective wisdom," etc. -- but the point is to come up with a stellar plan of action. Ideally, the forum will result in some sort of consensus to be shared with the state before the California State Supreme Court considers the ban on same-sex marriage.

The forum will go over the election results, perform brainstorming exercises, ask you to answer "how Proposition 8 hurt you," review the No On 8 campaign, reach out to those who voted 'yes,' and much more. Very important stuff, folks.

Here are the details.

Prefaced by the Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up," more than 100 Marin residents sat in Newsom's old school library to participate in the town hall-ish meeting.

The best part is that Newsom took questions from the audience. And if you think San Francisco residents ask loony questions, well:

Newsom learned Monday night why audience questions were pre-screened during the presidential election's televised town hall meetings. Several audience members rambled on for minutes with no sign of a question in sight. Two audience participants urged Newsom to look into supposed corruption within Marin's family court system. One woman urged Newsom to make sure San Francisco's streets are washed more thoroughly, another submitted a proposal for installing public drinking fountains. Then there was the man who submitted "a comprehensive blueprint for solving the global rise in oceanic sea levels."

While we havbe no clue whether or not it exists, the corruption within Marin's family court system seems reasonable.

That clean freak had better have a Tenderloin address, and not some Mill Valley dream house, if she's making such an anal demand.

But the public drinking fountain and blueprint fellas: insane. Period.

Newsom also told the crowd that they probably wouldn't be keen on some of the cuts in San Francisco's budget that he plans to reveal by week's end. "I'm going to be making some terrible decisions," Newsom told the room. "Do not think for a moment I'm proud."

Oh, and when asked how he plans on dosing more conservative voters' cocktails, Newsom's GHB will be not mentioning that whole same-sex marriage thing. "I'm not going to lead with 'I'm for gay marriage. I get it," he promised.
