The roof deck above Medjool, the notorious Mission hangout for Marina types, has finally won approval from the Planning Commission after operating illegally since 2005. The legalization of Medjool's rooftop party palace comes with a few stipulations. Namely: fewer people allowed up there, a smaller space and no more live music.
Medjool's Roof Deck Finally Goes Legit
Medjool Owner Comes Clean: Nightclub, Hostel and Roof Deck Restaurant Are All Up for Sale
After a couple months of sitting on the fence, Mission Street mogul Gus Murad has finally confirmed that Medjool and the Elements hostel that holds up it's roof deck restaurant are all on the market for a cool $7.25 million. You'll remember back in January, Murad claimed he was just trying to get a sense of what the building would get on the open market and it doesn't sound like there's a huge change here - Murad's spokesman mentioned there's no immediate need to unload the property. Still, you might also remember Murad unloaded a large portion of his Mission Street empire last month when he sold the Giant Value building to Oyster Development who intend to take over the plans to develop it as condos and retail.
Medjool Owner Unloads Giant Value for Condo Development
The ongoing saga surrounding developments at Mission and 21st Streets got a new chapter this morning when the SF Business Times reported Gus Murad has unloaded the former Giant Value property to Oyster Development Group. The new owners intend to follow through on Murad's original plan to develop the Giant Value as condos and retail space (a plan Gus has had some trouble with in the past).
What's Up, Medjool?
SFist's very own Andrew Dalton clears up some rumors about Medjool (a notorious rooftop Mission bar that privileged white twentysomethings loathe because another faction of privileged white twentysomethings enjoy it) over at Curbed. Namely, that owner Gus Murad plans on selling the popular joint. "Murad has, in fact, put Medjool and the attached Elements Hostel on the Market, but by all accounts he remains fully committed to the restoration project of the New Mission Theater as well as the Giant Value." So, there you have it. Breathe easy, Missionites. [Curbed]
Save Medjool?
Winner of Eater's coveted Douchiest Bars In San Francisco Award, controversial Mission Street bar Medjool is in danger of being closed down. The SF Planning Department wants to yank the permits for the bar's rooftop terrace -- the city's only rooftop bar. And if the rooftop bar closes, the entire place will inevitably fold. According to SF Weekly, an "e-campaign" is in the works in the form of a Facebook page called "SAVE MEDJOOL" is currently recruiting members. (An aside: If anyone wants to give it a try, a "CLOSE MEDJOOL" Facebook page would probably get the even more followers.) While most of you squee in delight at the thought of Medjool shuttering, this would also mean 60 hard-working employees will be out of a job.
