Jeez. According to @abc7newsbayarea, this officer (one of several) was drenched in a substance believed to be yellow paint during today's May Day protest in Oakland. As SFist reported earlier that paint was used as a weapon during tonight's unrest. Following a scuffle between the fuzz and civilian, "fellow protesters responded by throwing bottles and paint balloons at officers. The officers responded by charging at the crowd and issuing a dispersal order." more ›

Live: Oakland Cops Prepare For General Strike Showdown [Updated]

Justin Beck's live coverage of today's May Day occupation continues. Right now, at around 3 p.m., cops have arrived in Oakland near Broadway and 14th, demanded protesters to leave or face "removal by force if necessary." The standoff seems pretty intense, even thought there aren't of protesters in the area right now. Then again, this is Oakland. If past Occupy-ish action in Oakland has told us one thing, it's that anything can happen. Even snacks aren't safe. more ›

May Day: Demonstration Shuts Down 16th & Mission [Updated]

The revolution will be Instagramed, as pictured here by Jen Ackrill, and nowhere else does that sentiment ring truer than in the heart of the city's Mission District. A May Day demonstration at 16th and Mission currently underway has effectively shut down the intersection today. Traffic is being diverted. If you plan on driving in the area... don't. more ›

Four Barrel Responds To Mission May Day Riot

Four Barrel Responds To Mission May Day Riot

Monday night's early Occupy May Day General Strike brouhaha occurred after a gathering in Dolores Park splintered and then moved down into the Mission. Things got ugly fast. Twitter feed-clogging places like Bar Tartine, Laconda, and Four Barrel Coffee all took a hit. And while the last night's misguided action gave mission blogs a nice boost in traffic and provided local food writers with something other than advertorial, the brief riot did result in thousands of dollars worth of damage. Alas. However, Four Barrel responded to the meltdown with some much-needed humor. more ›

Live: SEIU Protest At San Francisco City Hall In Progress

Live: SEIU Protest At San Francisco City Hall In Progress

Justin Beck is live at City Hall covering today's SEIU occupation. So far there are an estimated hundred or so protesters inside, one brandishing a bullhorn to shout and chant stuff. Supervisors Eric Mar and David Campos have shouted into the bullhorn. Others might too. Cops are at the scene and reportedly "concerned about the noise level." It's all very exciting. (Not season finale of RuPaul's Drag Race exciting, but thrilling nevertheless.) Anyway, we'll keep an eye on the scene. If you'd like to watch it live, visit Justin Beck's UStream or view it below. more ›

SEIU Planning Wisconsin-Style Occupation Of San Francisco City Hall

SEIU Planning Wisconsin-Style Occupation Of San Francisco City Hall

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) local 1021 will attempt a Wisconsin-style occupation of San Francisco City Hall starting tonight and going well into tomorrow, May Day. Via the SEIU Facebook page, "We will take back city hall, Wisconsin style! This is IT. Arbitration begins Monday. We need to send a clear message to the Mayor and Board of Supervisors: Give us a fair contract!" SEIU, the city's most powerful public employee union, wants businesses "to pay more for the city services they enjoy, which workers hope would stave off pay cuts or increased health care payments," reports The Chronicle. Specifically, they're calling for Mayor Ed Lee's business tax proposal to pull in roughly $25 million to $40 million more than the $400 million the current business tax does each year. more ›

Occupy's Plan To Shut Down Golden Gate Bridge Cancelled

Occupy's Plan To Shut Down Golden Gate Bridge Cancelled

Er, never mind. Occupy's plan to shut down the Golden Gate Bridge on May 1st has been cancelled. Occupy will instead focus on ferry service. Why? Well, part of it could be that the Golden Gate Bridge District just agreed to pay a reported $2 million to "380 workers represented by 14 unions who have been out of contract since July 2011 over a dispute about medical insurance costs passed on to workers," reports Susie Cagle for SF Appeal. more ›

White Supremacists Attacked During Immigration Rally

White Supremacists Attacked During Immigration Rally

Members of the Bay Area National Anarchists -- a group, according to SF Weekly that "believes in white separatism and which supports the controversial Arizona anti-immigrant law" -- were physically attacked during Saturday's May Day rally at Civic Center Plaza. BANA founder Andrew Yeoman told the Weekly's Lauren Smiley that three members counter protesting on the sidewalk in front of City Hall were "attacked with mace, punches, kicks, and shoves as they left the immigration reform rally on Saturday." more ›

Happy May Day

Happy May Day

It warms our red hearts to see workers marching here at home and around the world on International Workers' Day, otherwise known as May Day. Protests and demonstrations happened from Berlin to Indonesia, and while most were peaceful, there were scuffles with authorities. Here in the United States, the marches were to protest changes to immigration laws, and coincided with many businesses shuttering their doors as immigrant workers walked off their jobs. Marches were also held in solidarity with immigrants across the border in Mexico, where they celebrated "Un Dia Sin Gringos." more ›
