A Masonic Avenue prowler freaked his teenaged victim out, suddenly appearing in her bedroom Thursday morning.

Police say that the crime occurred at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, in a residence on the 800 block of Masonic Avenue, which is between Fell and Hayes Streets.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, the 19-year-old female victim was alone in the back bedroom of the home, which she shares "with several roommates."

The suspect, a man she believes was in his late 30s, walked into the room "and said 'Hi.'"

The victim did not recognize the suspect, police say, and expressed enough alarm that the suspect fled, an unspecified amount of stolen property in tow.

Police say that the victim was not injured in the incident. As of Friday morning, police say that no arrests have been made in this case.

Photos: Beck At The Masonic, Friday 9/19

Beck performed the inaugural show at the newly renovated and reopened Masonic auditorium atop Nob Hill, now operated by Live Nation.

Arts & Entertainment

concert reviews

concerts

masonic

Jay Barmann

Friday night, the great and talented Beck performed for the grand reopening night of The Masonic, the auditorium space formerly known as The Nob Hill Masonic Center that's been taken over by Live Nation, who also operates the Fillmore. The space has gotten a multi-million-dollar facelift, and as SFist correspondent Raymond Ahner says, it's "spectacular."

To a near-capacity crowd (the venue seats 3,300), Beck opened the show with "The Golden Age" from Sea Change, and then worked his way through about half of the mellow, acoustic songs from the new album, Morning Phase including "Blackbird Chain" and "Blue Moon." He then brought the place to life with a quartet of early hits (“Devil’s Haircut,” “Black Tambourine,” “Loser” and “Hell Yes”) and closed out the show with a Donna Summer cover ("I Feel Love" in a medley with "Think I'm In Love"), as well as a long, light-hearted version of "Debra," and a perennial crowd favorite, "Where It's At."

And, audience members all took home commemorative, Fillmore-style posters.

Update: Live Nation says that its website, as well as Ticketmaster's, had both listed the Beck show before it was confirmed. We'll update you as to whether this show, originally listed for September 19, is happening.

Update 2: Beck will perform at the opening night of the Masonic on September 19 and tickets are available now with the pre-sale code MORNING.

Located at the top of Nob Hill, the mid-century auditorium formerly known as Nob Hill Masonic Center (1111 California Street) has been made over into a concert venue called The Masonic and reopens September 19 with Beck as its first headliner. Check out all the upcoming shows — which include the Pixies, Modest Mouse, and Broken Bells — here and listed below.

Live Nation states in a press release that the multi-million dollar renovation, which spanned the spring and summer of 2014, has added a new stage, state-of-the-art sound system, bars and concession stands, and an open general admission space below the tiered seating.

The venue's capacity is now 3,300, giving S.F. concert-goers an opportunity to see big name bands in a space that's less than half the size of Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. Plus, it's way prettier.

Is flyering your neighborhood the trend du jour of opinion-mongering? Days after all this went down, the folks over at Uppercasing have discovered a satirical gem that takes the classic drivers rights vs. pedestrian/cyclist safety argument to the next level.

A proposed Masonic redevelopment project that would remove some parking and add an elevated bike lane apparently has the area papered over with arguments for and against, but this one takes the cake for its clever use of "RAGE CAPS!!!" to skewer opponents of the plan. It so perfectly crystallizes the kneejerk reactions to this sort of thing that at first glance it seems almost genuine. Here are some highlights:

Don’t let the BIG LIE that over 700 people have been hit by cars in the past year in San Francisco fool you! MASONIC is as safe as a kittens belly fur!
90% of the people who agree with us and the FACTS THAT WE JUST MADE UP SUPPORT OUR CONCLUSIONS!!

A FLOOD of frustrated drivers whose trip now takes 5 minutes and 15 seconds instead of just 5 minutes will go on a KILLING SPREE!!! YOU MAY BE THEIR NEXT VICTIM!!! LIKE SUDDEN IMPACT! YOU WILL BE IMPACTED! ALL DAY EVERY DAY!

Write letters as though you have a fifth grade education! Grammar be DAMNED! WE KNOW the County Stoopid-visors are doing this TO YOU because GREED! Their evil intent, their INSIDIOUSNESS and MEAN-SPIRITEDNESS is matched only by that of… THE CYCLISTS!!

Keep the dream of the 1950′s alive! EVERY ROAD IS A HIGHWAY! TEA PARTY FOR LIFE!!! Are you a lawyer? Do you know one that wants to work for free? Perhaps for a bunch of shrill, hysterical crybabies over forty?

Good stuff. Head over to Uppercasing for the full read.

An SFist reader, who has asked to remain anonymous, sent us these photos and the following description of the scene:

Major bus accident occured at about 6:20pm in the Panhandle. Suggest everyone avoid the intersection of Fell & Masonic for awhile. Dozens of fire trucks, police cars, ambulances, etc. are clogging up the streets.

A black [Volkswagen] tried to cut in front of the bus, and instead got caught under the front of the bus.

The bus traveled the rest of the block with the car wedged under it, until it lost control and crashed into the Panhandle. Luckily no one was walking on the path at the time the bus came to a stop.

As of 6:35pm, the bus driver was lying on the ground and an ambulance was on the way.

Though it's hard to see in the photos, there was also a bike being stored on the front of the bus. That poor bike is obviously now a mangled mess.

At least one person was injured and transported to a nearby hospital. We'll update as soon as we know more. More pics below.

The city's second Target store, currently planning for a Grand Opening in Spring 2013, will be moving in to the former home of Mervyn's after a bit of a facelift.

Judging by the renderings above, the 120,000 square foot City Center Target will enjoy Mervyn's open-air (and downright suburban) parking lot on Masonic Ave. Appropriately enough, the new tenant will also be cozying up to other strip mall favorites in the complex: There's currently a Best Buy on the second level and an Office Depot around the back. (Not to mention a Trader Joe's about a block away.)

The Planning Commission's approval came during a hearing last Thursday on the state of retail franchise approvals in the city. In Target's case, the chain retailer didn't see much opposition. The Chronicle's John King reports that the signage may be the only sticking point. Target, it seems, wants more and bigger signs than the Planning Commission is likely to allow thanks to city regulations about signs in residential areas.

A hit-and-run incident claimed the life of a 55-year-old man at Masonic and Turk last night. The Chronicle reports: "The series of crashes began at about 2:30 a.m. when the suspect, Jose Jimenez, 23, of San Francisco, ran down a 55-year-old man crossing Masonic Avenue at Turk Boulevard." Jimenez was allegedly drunk at the time of the crash. This is the second time in less than a year that a car accident claimed a life at the notorious intersection. His death was determined to be the result of vehicular homicide, and 36-year-old Josh Calder, who allegedly ran him over, then fled the scene after switching seats with his girlfriend, is scheduled to appear in court this week to discuss the report.

SFCitizen reports, "A small Ford Focus ZXW station wagon collided with a cyclist at the intersection of Fell and Masonic this afternoon." And, judging by the photos of the accident scene, it looked like a doozy. The "fixie had its fork torn in two" and the Ford's window and hood are smashed in. No word yet on the condition of the cyclist.

Fell and Masonic, notorious for bike-car collisions, installed a specially-designed cyclist traffic light back in 2008 to help curb such accidents.

So, yeah, as always, be careful out there on the streets, cyclists and drivers.

Unauthorized Trader Joe's Commercial

Forgive us if you're one of the almost 500,000 who've seen it already... we hadn't, and it was shot in our very own Trader Joe's on Masonic on some guy's Palm Treo.
Forgive us if you're one of the almost 500,000 who've seen it already... we hadn't, and it was shot in our very own Trader Joe's on Masonic on some guy's Palm Treo. It's a cute little ditty set to the tune of Jobim's "Waters of March," and we especially like the references to the over-small parking lot and the "twelve kinds of of soy milk that all taste the same." See, the plan to do something about Masonic would:

Add a left turn lane on Fell Street approaching the intersection with Masonic. Vehicles would be allowed to turn left only on a green left-turn signal. During the left-turn phase, pedestrians and cyclists would see a "Don't Walk" signal. The project would require the removal of up to four parking spaces on Fell Street.

But since the word "bike" is in what the city wants to do, they have to go to a judge to get a special court order in order to put in a left-hand turn signal. We're not going to get into the politics of this, but here's hoping that the judge does the commonsense thing and lets 'em put in the damned signal. It'll make our Panhandle mornings that much less dangerous.
