Here's todays sports wrap up...

-The Warriors lost to the Charlotte Bobcats last night, 98-90. You can't really get too upset about the game as the Warriors are on the longest road trip of the season and played a game in Philly the night before. Most teams in that situation would lose. Not so good is that they are 1-3 on this road trip. -Sharks beat up on the Blackhawks 4-2. They're still having problems with their power play (0-6)......

-Warriors get 40 in the first quarter, then shoot the lights out in a 131-105 win at home. Mark Purdy isn't going to jump on the Warriors bandwagon just yet. -Cal men can't quite beat USC. -Stanford women beat Arizona State in OT. -Nancy Gay gets the Super Bowl hype officially started. -Art Spander loves "the lull," that one weekend between the playoffs and the Super Bowl. -The A's had their FanFest and Nick Swisher......

Okay, here's something that we've always wondered about in football-- why don’t coaches in the final minutes of a football let the other team score to get the ball back instead of letting the other team run down the clock and kick the game-winning field goal? Just look at the Eagles/Giants game. The Eagles were in easy field goal range with about two minutes to go and the Giants out of time outs. So the Eagles just ran the clock out and won the game with a last second field goal, something that was pretty much inevitable. So what if instead of doing what they did, the Giants let Westbrook run it in for a TD with a minute or so left so they could get the ball back? Wouldn’t that make more sense than hoping that some sort of fluke play occurs? If you were a coach, would you rather take your chances hoping that the team that's driving either screws up the field goal, fumbles, or gets backed up due to penalties or would you rather take a chance with your offense scoring again? ...

-So we've already had our say about Art's canning, but what does everyone else say? Ray Ratto wishes whomever the next coach is good luck and Gwen Knapp thinks it should be the Mulleted One (as does Don Banks on CNNSI). Raiders Fan House runs down a list of candidates as does Inside Bay Area. In the national sites, Deadspin wonders if Al and Art are the new Billy Martin and George Steinbrenner and ESPN's Mark Kreidler thinks Al needs to get over himself and hire some big name guy. Over in San Jose, Mark Purdy picks Bill Cowher out of his ass as a potential replacement. ...

Well, the Powers that Be decided to actually give us two NFL games on TV this morning at once. That's the good news. The bad news is one features the Raiders and the other the Detroit Lions. Which means that someone, somewhere, thinks everyone here is so tied into who gets the #1 pick next year that everyone in the Bay Area wants to watch both teams at the same time. ...

So how did the Giants' hiring of Bruce Bochy go over with Giants fans? Well, does the word "meh" mean anything to you. It's not that people were upset (well, some people were) but most people just kind of gave it a shrug and said that it's not such a bad pick. Kind of like when you go out looking for a used car to buy and you dream of a sports car or a hybrid and you wind up doing what everyone else does-- buy a Honda. It's not very exciting and it's not very sexy but the car just plain ole works. ...
