Noted local photographer Troy Holden shared with SFist these photos of the new Twitter headquarters. The recently-opened digs at the old SF Mart feature a rooftop garden (where employees can lounge in the sun), a micro-health kitchen (so clean, stark, and anal-retentive; the stuff that gastronomic dreams are made of), a yoga studio (for crucial chakra centering), aesthetically-pleasing chat areas, arcade games (Tempest, anyone?), and the cutest reception desk that we've ever laid our eyes upon.

The social media company's move to mid-Market Street's 11-floor art deco building was a deft move by the city. San Francisco hopes it will revitalize the economically-impoverished and arguably seedy area at 10th and Market Streets. Twitter made national headlines in 2011 after the San Francisco Board of Supervisors overwhelmingly approved a somewhat controversial tax break (a convenient exemption of its 1.5 percent payroll tax on new hires at company), a move that kept the microblogging service from fleeing the city. Part of Twitter's deal with the city of San Francisco will also include, according to the SF Examiner, improved transit and new dedicated bike lanes in the area, as well as a police substation on habitually sketchy Sixth Street.

The new space will boast "80,000 square feet of retail space that will include cafes, restaurants, a health club and a local, cool grocery store," notes SF Biz Times.
But this year, due to our tanking economy, retailers are bound to come up short. (Even Oprah is turning her awe-inspiring "favorite things" episode into a DIY show. Pft.)

While most financial swamis predict a foul Black Friday, many are suggesting that "Cyber Monday" -- which allegedly earned its nickname from folks returning to work the Monday after Thanksgiving and not a marketing team -- might fair better. Many online retailers, according to shop.org executive director Scott Silverman, are "offering anything from free shipping, which is very popular, or coupons, or buy one get one free,"

Fingers crossed that the PSP's price takes a dramatic cut.

Conversely, most of you can choose/be forced to participate in Buy Nothing Day, an informal day of protest against consumerism observed by privileged social activists who grew up with too much money and every Nintendo game. Typically observed on Black Friday, Buy Nothing Day will fall on Saturday of 2008. The Really Really Free Market will hold a rally in Dolores Park at noon that day to celebrate. We suggest you buy a cute new hat and scarf since the weather promises to be quite chilly on Saturday.

Was a rally mocking Obama, or mocking McCain mocking Obama? Neither -- it was the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, offering patch kits and non-partisan air pressure to passing cyclists.

Speaking of politics, Democratic presidential candidates are more likely to be depicted riding a bike, but President Bush is also known to be an avid cyclist. Senator McCain has not been seen riding a bicycle, but he might decide to vote on one.

As for the tire-pressure-recommender himself, Senator Obama: his cycling has been the cause of much comment (seat adjusted correctly? helmet problematically evoking Michael Dukakis?). Our analysis of the photos sadly indicates under-inflated tires. We'd like to see at least 75 p.s.i. in those babies, Senator. We hear Washington is a high-pressure town. [Insert hot air joke here.]

Will the Bike Coalition pump up your tires again in the near future? No, but you can pump up the volume with the Urban Costume Karaoke Bicycle Brigade on Saturday, Aug. 9th at 4pm in Dolores Park. No candidate has yet dared to sing Madonna songs while biking around San Francisco in 80s costume.
