Partial Skeleton Discovered In Marin Headlands

After a kayaker found a skull in a cove below Battery Spencer on Monday in the Marin Headlands, authorities uncovered a partial skeleton, clothes, and jewelry. "After rappelling 600 feet down a cliff in heavy fog, crews recovered the intact skull, along with several upper body and torso bones," reports BCN (via KTVU). "They also found some clothes and a necklace, but the items were not gender-specific." Hmm. more ›

Oil Spill Damage Is, Well, Damaging

Oil Spill Damage Is, Well, Damaging

Oh man, are you kidding? This is terrible. Not to get all tugging-the-heart strings today, but this spill is much worse than initially reported yesterday. This oil covered bird above was found at Fort Baker cove in Sausalito today. It seems that the Marin Headlands are getting crazy sloshed with oil on their shores. (The aerial shots of the spill on SFGate are jaw-dropping.) A Golden Gate National Recreation Area ranger claims that the... more ›

Wednesdays, The New Wednesdays

Wednesdays, The New Wednesdays

Om, shanti, shanti, shanti, Wednesday..... Tonight: After you visit Stephen Colbert's adopted eaglet Stephen Jr. at the SF Zoo, stop by the zoo's Great Hall for a talk by the Gilman Int'l Conservation Foundation, about their efforts to save the okapi. The okapi is an endandered zebra/giraffe-y-like African eland whose pleasing combination of vowels and consonants gives it a place of honor in the hearts of obsessive crossword puzzlers like ourselves. Reception at 6:30, talk at 7. more ›

Rain On, Ride On

Rain On, Ride On

OK mountain bikers, it's raining this weekend, and that means most of the trails out there are muck. Yeah, sure, some trails like the Bobcat and Miwok trails in the Marin Headlands , the Mitchell Canyon and Deer Flat roads on Mt. Diablo, and the North Peak Access Road up Montara Mountain are probably still rideable, but beyond that, the trails are just too fragile for responsible riding right now. more ›

SFist Blotter

SFist Blotter

fattyarbuckle.jpg Turns out that the man who the US Park Service found throwing up by the side of the road in the Marin Headlands had a dead body in the trunk of his car. Suspect Scott McAlpin had been stalking and threatening his ex-girlfriend for over three years. McAlpin had been in jail sporadically (most recently last week, for failing to show up to a meeting of his anti- domestic violence class) but was allowed to go free after saying his grandmother was sick. Will the nightmare in Orinda ever end? Distraught residents are now worried that the deer shot last week is not actually the deer that's been attacking their dogs. One man, who witnessed the deer threatening his Jack Russell terrier, says he thinks the deer that was shot was too small. "It was not the same buck," he said. "I am concerned about the neighbors. The Department of Fish and Game is giving the community a false sense of security." Fish and Game says that the deer they shot was the correct one because it had dog bite marks on its ears. We'll see if further attacks are reported. And the SFPD is asking if anyone has any information about the beating of local artist Barry Nielsen, who was found in a coma on Bryant and Mariposa last Friday night. Nielsen was attending a friend's Open Studio event at Studio 212. more ›

Screw The Fog It's Summer Time

Sure we can easily forget the amazing weather we just have and will have now that the sky is grey and cloud cover is returning. But not this time. No sir. We weatherists are doing some non-scientific gut forecasting and preparing for some more super weather. Of course our Far East and Deep South Bay readers wonder when the good weather possibly could have stopped, but much of us sat under clouds and fog most of Thursday of the day. more ›

From the 1 California to the 108 Treasure Island

If your weekend was anything like our weekend, you spent three days mewling like a kitten about the heat and canceling all plans to go anywhere at all. Not these four SFSU students -- Gil Hackel (singer-songwriter), Nate Maas (cinema major), Trammell Scruggs (sound engineering major), and Zhenya Warshawsky (literature major) -- who launched and completed their Labor Day Weekend mission -- to ride every single MUNI bus line from end to end. Its name: Operation MuniCon. more ›

SFist Weekend Getaway - Marin Headlands

It's hump day, which means it's time to start planning that trip out of the city this weekend. Last weekend, SFist had a car, so we decided to take a trip across the monument to design and engineering that is the Golden Gate Bridge, destination: Marin Headlands. Traffic was a pain getting up Van Ness to Lombard, but after that it was smooth sailing. If you don't have a car, you can make the trip on a bike, too - the entire round trip was only thirty two miles! more ›
