La Barca, the proto-Marina Bar on Lombard Street that saw many a Herb Caen mention and maybe even more Gavin Newsom cameos over its nearly 50 year run, has been sold to a new group of partners Inside Scoop reports today. Sadly for fans of live mariachis and margaritas by the pitcherful, the new concept will set a new course that will steer it away from the current Mexican theme.
Historic Marina Bar La Barca to Close After 50 Year Run
Important Marina Bar News: They Finally Named One "Campus"
As reported by Inside Scoop, the post-collegiate neverland ranch in the Marina just got a little more self-effacing as the former Delaney's Bar on Chestnut Street suddenly becomes Campus. Scoop reports that the layout is the same, minus the bright green neon out front. The new joint may not have the beer pong tables like Union Street's Frat Row, but after hearing multiple Marina residents refer to their rides home on the 30X as "going back to campus", we imagine there are plenty of newly transplanted co-eds around to make this place a success based on the name alone.
Meanwhile, at Fort Mason...
This massive puffer fish (bird? angry bird?) kite readied for launch at Family Kite Day this past weekend.
Run With The Bus: Race The 22-Fillmore Bus Next Week
According to Muni, the 22-Fillmore route from the Marina Green to Geary takes anywhere between 22 just 17 minutes. You'll need strong legs if you want to run beat that time. See, on Wednesday, July 20, The folks behind Motion Starved wants you to join them as they attempt to race (and beat!) the 22-Fillmore line from the Marina Green all the way to Geary Boulevard. Those of you first to reach the top of Fillmore Hill will be rewarded with prizes, glory.
Dennis Knowlton Identified as Body Found Floating in Bay
Police identified the body of the man who was discovered in the Marina on Tuesday as 20-year-old Dennis Knowlton. According to reports, police "have not released a cause of death, however police are saying the fully clothed man had multiple stab wounds." It is believed that Knowlton was killed onMonday night.
Molly Ringwald Coming to the Marina, 6/14
Tomorrow night, Samantha Baker (AKA Molly Ringwald) will make a guest appearance in the city's Marina district. Why? Well, according to SFGate, "Molly Ringwald has partnered with San Francisco's Benefit Cosmetics to promote last year's 'Getting the Pretty Back,' her ode to growing old gracefully." Cool. Also, kinda sad. Ringwald, if we may, never lost her pretty. And she's, what, 41? 42? Practically still a fetus.
SFist Remembers: Pacific Stock Exchange [Video]
Way back in the 1990s, San Francisco was revered (sort of) as a city with which to be reckoned. Why? Because we had a stock exchange, that's why. Back in 1997, you see, people had jobs, money was made, and jerks flipped off cameras. (The latter was a Kurt-Cobainian phenomenon that, until duck face became all the rage, would sully Polaroids for years to come.) While the Pacific Exchange ceased most of its operations in 2001 -- a trading floor still operates on the second floor of the Mills Building -- many still harbor fond memories of the Pacific Exchange and all that it represented.
Pedestrian Killed by Car in the Marina
A 22-year-old male pedestrian was struck and killed by a car at around 1:20 a.m. this morning in the city's Marina district. The incident occurred at Lombard and Pierce. "The vehicle was driving eastbound on Pierce when the crash occurred," reports BCN. "The driver, a 30-year-old man, reportedly told officers that he did not see the pedestrian before the crash."
Eight People in the Marina Don't Want SmartMeters Either
About eight people gathered at about 10 a.m. around a truck from Wellington Energy Inc., the company that PG&E contracts to install the SmartMeters... the group retreated at about 10:30 a.m. to 101 Cervantes Blvd., where SmartMeters [were] scheduled to be installed by noon."
Palace of Fine Arts Reopens Today
After a long restoration process, the Palace of Fine Arts will reopen today. The San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department and the Maybeck Foundation plan on throwing a grand celebration at 10 a.m. today at Lyon Street and Marina Boulevard. "The monument, built for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, has required a few restorations over the decades, including the most recent one that started in 2004," reports BCN. "Crews repaired the palace's dome, restored the nearby lagoon, seismically upgraded the site, and added new entrances and pathways, among other improvements." [SF Appeal]
One Less Female Executive Chef After Liza Shaw Departs A16
Paolo Lucchesi of Inside Scoop broke some food industry news last night about the much-lauded A16. "Executive chef Liza Shaw — who has been in the kitchen since it opened in 2004 — will be leaving the Marina hotspot." Shaw will reportedly be "off to do some traveling." Owners Shelley Lindgren and Victoria Libin have replaced the noted food wiz with chef de cuisine David Taylor. This comes on the heels of Jennie Lorenzo departing Fifth Floor and Erica Holland-Toll exiting Ducca in September. Last year, Michael Bauer, if you recall, asked, 'where have all the women gone?' Good question, B. Good question. [Inside Scoop]
Swan Murder Commited at the Palace of Fine Arts
In the early morning hours this Saturday one of two remaining swans who called the lagoon at the Palace of Fine Arts home was brutally murdered. According to the Examiner, the 5-year-old mute swan, named Monday, was found with a broken neck and empty beer cans littering the crime scene. (No word on whether they were Budweiser cans, however.) Animal Control has a lead on a "huge beer party" that happened the same night just across Baker Street from the lagoon.
Tonight Extra: Douchebag Bar Crawl
What with douchebags reclaiming their moniker as of late -- which, of course, is a douchey thing to do -- we would be remiss not to point out tonight's Douchebag Bar Crawl V 2.0 DYL in -- where else? -- the Marina! (Very clever. So, does this mean the Mission is finally over?) The night starts out at 5 p.m. at Circa (2001 Chestnut), and then heads to the Horseshoe Tavern, Marina Lounge, Bar None, Hi Fi Lounge, and finally at The Matrix. Naturally. Check out Douchebag Bar Crawl's event page on Yelp for more details. (Thanks for the tip, Luke.)
Greedy Groupon Subscribers Lead to Marina Cupcake Drama
Cupcakes, online coupons, bad Yelp reviews, the Marina -- this story has something irksome for everybody. According to a tipster, a recent group of people "flocked" to a Marina cupcake store to redeem their coupons bought on Groupon (think Coupon Suzy, minus the frustrating camisole). Putting aside the fact that cupcakes are a blight (death knell?) to the foodie community, let's see what went down:
SFist Eats: The Brick Yard In the Marina
We like to jest that the way to get us out to the Marina/Cow Hollow arrondissement is by promising us a free meal. We kid, of course. But, lo and behold, that's just what The Brick Yard, a new casual California-inspired restaurant, did: invited SFist to the just-opened Marina restaurant for a free dinner. With Eye On Blog's Beth Spotswood as our date, we wiggled out to the Marina for a free dinner, an area we rarely visit. Which is too bad since, during the afternoon, the area is lovely. Almost serene, a calm before the bro-storm.
San Francisco Marina Hotel Ranks Filthiest Of All
Scott Kleinberg with the Red Eye posted about the 10 dirtiest hotels in the nation as ranked by TripAdvisor, slamming San Francisco's Heritage Marina Hotel California as the filthiest of them all.
String of Burglaries Hits the Marina
Apartment burglaries are on the rise in the Marina. So much so, in fact, that the police are warning residents about a serial thief. According to CBS 5/BCN, "Northern Station Capt. Ann Mannix estimated there have been about a dozen burglaries in the past month in the Lombard Street area and adjoining streets to the north and south." Jewelry, laptops, and/or other electronic equipment have been the items of choice of for stealing.
Union Street NIMBYs Win
Cow Hollow merchants are rejoicing after crushing Muni's new terminal bus idea. If you recall, Muni wanted to "establish a 291 feet long Bus Terminus at Union & Fillmore." But after merchants threw a temper-tantrum, culled in thousands of signatures, made lots of frowny faces, Muni Executive Director Nathaniel Ford relented. "[T]he two sides agreed to a compromise — the articulated buses would only run from 5 to 9 a.m. on Union Street and the terminal idea at Union and Fillmore streets would be temporarily abandoned," chirps The Examiner. [Curbed, via Ex]
Union Street NIMBYs Lose Marbles Over Muni Bus Proposal
A Muni proposal is underway to "establish a 291 feet long Bus Terminus at Union & Fillmore," which we think it a might fine idea. Improvements to public transportation like this should be a top priority. But merchants in the Cow Hollow are up in arms. Why? Because they lack clarity. Proving to be as inane as Geary merchants (who, time after time, fail to see the bigger picture, resulting in years of curably crippled traffic) and Valencia business owners (elitists of the very worst kind), Union Street businesses worry that the "bendy" buses will ruin their precious gem of a neighborhood. The NIMBY's harrowing press release on the subject, which can be found in its entirety at SFCitizen, is a regular hoot.
7x7 Gets Hyperlocal
In an attempt to get in on the hyperlocal (ugh, that word) trend, glossy rag interviewed pretty people about their favorite places to go in specific San Francisco neighborhoods. Above, Mission district fans prattle on about Revolution Cafe, Beauty Bar, and a bench.
SFist Blotter
FRIDAY / MARINA: Marking a rare guest appearance on SFist Blotter is the controversial Marina neighborhood. [cue Ritual Roasters coffee spit take] See, during a two-hour standoff inside a Marina hotel at 11 p.m., Waddell Williams, 33, allegedly shot at officers from inside his "touristy hotel room." The incident occurred at the Chelsea Motor Inn, located at Lombard and Webster streets. No one was injured. Williams was arrested. No word yet as to why he shot at SFPD officers.
Marina Middle School Volleyball Coach Arrested On Molestation Charges

Pedersen has been hit with with "three counts of lewd or lascivious acts and one count of continuous sexual abuse of a child."
Big Bad Blonde Wig Bar Crawl Taskes Over the Marina

Guide to San Francisco's Douchiest Bars
Last week Eater asked its readers for their opinions on the "douchiest" bar in San Francisco.
USC Fratboy Stabbed Outside Fratboy-Run Bar
Visiting the Bay Area to attend the Standford-USC football game, Kellen Spani, a senior majoring in business administration and Pi Kappa Alpha brethren, was stabbed outside PlumpJack Balboa Bar in the Marina early Saturday morning. Spani, it seems, was coming to the aid of a friend when he took a blade to the gut. He is expected to live and be back at school after Thanksgiving. The two suspects involved in the stabbing, however, have been booked on charges of attempted murder, each facing felony charges.
Let's Dream of a Non-Wretched Fisherman's Wharf
Oh, sure, you've seen all the coverage of Jan Gehl's plan to turn Fisherman's Wharf into something tolerable. But wouldn't you like to know more? The excellent SPUR is holding a forum TODAY about the city's plan to alleviate pedestrian-congestion by updating the neighborhood's 1950s-style freeway-inspired urban design: widening sidewalks, installing benches, and adding bike lanes, injunction be damned. After all, be honest: when's the last time you went to Fisherman's Wharf? Probably when you had out-of-town guests.
Quote of the Day: You Gonna Get Mugged
If we may add a teaspoon of alarmism to you afternoon coffee, you are going to get mugged and/or killed. And soon. And right here in SF.
Blocker: 2300 Bay
(Harvard.)
In an imaginary world where San Francisco neighborhoods are represented by stars’ hairstyles, the Marina is Bryan Ferry – artfully coiffed, with a subtle smattering of muss to keep the wispy-haired skeptics on their toes. Bay St. between Broderick and Baker, on the western edge of the Marina, embodies this aesthetic as well as any residential block in the district.
Since nothing remotely unusual appears to happen here much – short of the odd cataclysmic earthquake and subsequent fire (see: October 1989) – it’s up to the block’s architecture, immaculately trimmed foliage, and occasional through-walker to provide a bit of Blocker-style backbone. Otherwise, we’re relegated to a piece about all the college alumni license plate frames and window decals slapped on cars parked along this street. Not such an enticing slant.
