Another day of Bay Area-wide demonstrations saw thousands of young children circling Lake Merritt bobbing "Black Lives Matter" signage, a second kids march near City College in SF that instilled hope for a more empathic future, and a Santa Cruz "paddle out" in honor of George Floyd’s life.

Earlier Sunday, it was announced the Minneapolis City Council would commit to disbanding the city’s police department, cemented by a veto-proof vote from the council's members. There's no denying this: protests across the country — and around the world, frankly — catalyzed, perhaps even predicated, that decision. Similarly, the Marine Corps (after years of hushed silence) finally committed to removing Confederate flags and symbols at thier bases across the country.

So, yes: our collective calls for racial equality are being heeded. And Sunday's regional chantings, marchings, and gatherings continued to add to those dialogues.

At 10:30 a.m., hundreds gathered at the SF's Civic Center Plaza to "sit, walk, [and] listen" as part of a Buddhist display of solidarity with Black Lives Matter (BLM), which was later in the day followed by a prayerful protest at City Hall; a sizeable, slow-moving car caravan, which began at SFSU, snaked through much of Parkmerced around 2 p.m. this afternoon. Kids (accompanied by adults), too, marched in the hundreds near City College.

Like-episodes of unity this morning and afternoon were observed in the East Bay too, where the vast majority of today's protesting and in-person activism took place. Though among the many scenes of togetherness — a car caravan organized to call for "peace and justice"; mothers in Rockridge banning together for racial equality; an Oakland community bike ride in unity with BLM — the Kids Peace March Around Lake Merritt was maybe the most hopeful and warming. Hundreds of families showed up to walk, march, and, in a literal way, stroll around the Oakland watering hole to advocate for better, brighter years to come. And this evening, candlelight vigils were held in both Berkeley and Oakland.

Other calm protests and marches were seen in the Peninsula and South Bay as well, but among the more left-of-center demonstrations was a Santa Cruz "paddle out" to honor the life of George Floyd.

San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk were assassinated 35 years ago today. To mark the occasion, a candlelight vigil will start at Milk Plaza at 7pm followed by a candlelight march down Market Street to City Hall. Other highlights? A performance by the Gay Men's Chorus, a speech by Oscar-winning Dustin Lance Black (Milk), and a recorded message from Harvey Milk.

Harvey and George were the brightest beacons of hope for San Francisco’s disenfranchised and displaced. But more than that, they represented the spirit of San Francisco, a city for anyone and everyone, welcoming to all, affordable to all, with justice for all. 35 years later, the time has come again for us to gather, one and all, to remember Harvey and George. More importantly, the time has come to make their vision of a city of hope come alive. Now more than ever, we have to give each other hope.

Every Friday before Pride, the Trans March kicks things off in Dolores Park. This year's theme is "Trans Generations: Define Your Moment," which can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Needless to say, it's a great theme for a great party. Another thing about the Trans March? It's turned into the Pride party for people who are over Pride.

Gwen from Trans March writes:

Pride's fun. Reeaally fun. The entire city gets covered in rainbows and unicorns, hot strangers from parts unknown descend upon your local bars and you get to party like it's 1999, 1989, 1979 and 2009 all rolled up into one all in the same weekend and sometimes even in the same night! It's a good time of the year. We're big fans.

But all that partying isn't for everyone. It's great when you're at that time in your life, but for those who aren't there yet, for those who are totally over it, for those who can't be around it anymore, and for a whole bunch of others, it can be a little uncomfortable. That's why we're promoting our event as a true all ages affair that genuinely welcomes youth, families, seniors, sober folks and all other people who might not want to be around intoxicants.

Hey, don't get us wrong. We love to get drinks and if you catch us at the after party at El Rio, we might even get you a shot. Especially if you're cute! But while we're in the park and we're in the middle of the serious business of creating trans space for all of us AND raising trans awareness in more mainstream culture, we're gonna stay away from the fun flask and we're hoping you'll do the same.

Let's face it, after the parade is done, the Pride party at Civic Center can really turn into one giant brightly-colored shit show, as it did last year where both gay bashing and police brutality occurred at Civic Center. But there's no need to hate on Pride. It's a fun time for all, yes? Yes. Gays in SF just need to over something because...well, they like being done with things. Or at least saying as much. Anyway, check out all of the sanctioned and non-sanctioned Pride-related events happening this weekend care of SF Bay Guardian's Marke B., Caitlin Donohue, and April M. Short.

The cranky yet spirited folks at OccupySF, an Occupy Wall Street splinter group showing west coast solidarity, will hold a march up Market Street today. The group will meet at the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank at 101 Market just above Embarcadero BART station. They also need stuff. Lots of stuff. What kind of stuff? Well, among an extensive list of items they'd like to have, they're asking for: dishes, silverware, BART/Clipper cards, canopies, porta-a-potties, solar panels, photovoltaic generators, natural herbs, "fluoride free" toothpaste, natural honey, good knives, ink for a HP series 1200 printer, good selection of spices, seeds, and kitty [sic] pools.

We have a half-used tube of Crest that's up for grabs, but, you know, it's laced with cavity creep-fighting fluoride.

On Saturday, August 6, San Francisco hosted its first Slut Walk. Scores of people showed up at Dolores Park to talk about their own personal experiences with rape. As SF Weekly's Ginger Murray reports, Jessica "Jane Doe" Gonzales told her story about being a victim of gang rape: "She was assaulted by her high school football team while unconscious. At the trial the clothing she wore, the fact that she was intoxicated, and her social network photos were all used against her. The perpetrators were not convicted."

Murry goes on to point out, "There were almost as many men marching as women, and and many different communities were in evidence."

Sparked earlier this year, the Slut Walk movement came about after a police officer in Toronto told audience members at York University that "women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized." In addition to shedding light on rape and victim-blaming, Slut Walk co-founders Sonya Barnett and Heather Jarvis "decided to use the word slut in their response. They observe that historically, 'slut' has had negative connotations, and that their goal is to redeem the term."

The 32nd Annual Milk-Moscone Memorial March kicks off tonight at 6 p.m. with speeches by Cleve Jones, Harry Britt, David Campos, Carol Migden, and Tom Ammiano at Harvey Milk Plaza at the corner of Castro and Market streets.

The annual event provides the community with an opportunity to "commemorate the assassination of Supervisor Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone, mourn the loss of two of our city’s most progressive elected officials, reflect on their visions for San Francisco, and learn more about their lives through testimony from family and friends of Harvey."

A candlelight march to the site of Milk's old camera shop at 575 Castro Street will begin at the Castro Muni station (Castro & Market Streets) at 6:45 p.m.

There's a lot to love about SF's fantastic Chinese New Year parade -- and a lot of love the parade as well. Marching for the fifth time in a row this year is API Equality, and LGBT advocacy group serving the Asian and Pacific Islander communities. And you can join them!

API Equality has put out an open call to anyone interested in joining their contingent. They're meeting up beforehand at 4:45 on February 7th, near Market and 2nd. (Dress in yellow and red, and look for contingent #39.) The parade starts at 5:30 and will, as always, be a blast.

A complaint filed by civil rights organization Californians Against Hate prompted the the California Fair Political Practices Commission to investigate the LDS Church and their work in supporting Proposition 8. It seems the Mormon church allegedly concealed just how big a role they played in initiating a ban into the California constitution that would bar same-sex couples from getting married. According to AP, "the investigation does not mean there was any wrongdoing, only that commission staff have found evidence to warrant further inquiry."

No-on-8 folks, this isn't necessary.

Lord knows the other side, if you will, is just waiting for the stop Prop. 8 movement to use its salad fork during the entree course, so let's keep venom such as the above -- found in Noe Valley, shot on Sanchez Street from the Castro -- to a minimum.

Really, this is almost as hateful as the people who voted for Prop. 8. And it's unfair to LDS ilk who actively fought against Prop. 8.
