The cranky yet spirited folks at OccupySF, an Occupy Wall Street splinter group showing west coast solidarity, will hold a march up Market Street today. The group will meet at the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank at 101 Market just above Embarcadero BART station. They also need stuff. Lots of stuff. What kind of stuff? Well, among an extensive list of items they'd like to have, they're asking for: dishes, silverware, BART/Clipper cards, canopies, porta-a-potties, solar panels, photovoltaic generators, natural herbs, "fluoride free" toothpaste, natural honey, good knives, ink for a HP series 1200 printer, good selection of spices, seeds, and kitty [sic] pools.
OccupySF Midday March Today
Photos from San Francisco's First Slut Walk
On Saturday, August 6, San Francisco hosted its first Slut Walk. Scores of people showed up at Dolores Park to talk about their own personal experiences with rape. As SF Weekly's Ginger Murray reports, Jessica "Jane Doe" Gonzales told her story about being a victim of gang rape: "She was assaulted by her high school football team while unconscious. At the trial the clothing she wore, the fact that she was intoxicated, and her social network photos were all used against her. The perpetrators were not convicted."
Tonight at 6 p.m.: Annual Milk-Moscone Memorial March
The 32nd Annual Milk-Moscone Memorial March kicks off tonight at 6 p.m. with speeches by Cleve Jones, Harry Britt, David Campos, Carol Migden, and Tom Ammiano at Harvey Milk Plaza at the corner of Castro and Market streets.
March in the Chinese New Year Parade with API Equality
There's a lot to love about SF's fantastic Chinese New Year parade -- and a lot of love the parade as well. Marching for the fifth time in a row this year is API Equality, and LGBT advocacy group serving the Asian and Pacific Islander communities. And you can join them!
Day Without a Gay Protest Photos, San Francisco, 12/10
Tonight's Day Without a Gay protest seemed peaceful compared to those just over a month ago when Prop 8, the same-sex marriage ban, passed. Although cops in riot gear gathered on Market and Octavia streets just eager for a head to crack open, we haven't heard word yet as to any arrests or melee.
Mormon Church Investigated for Role in Prop 8
A complaint filed by civil rights organization Californians Against Hate prompted the the California Fair Political Practices Commission to investigate the LDS Church and their work in supporting Proposition 8. It seems the Mormon church allegedly concealed just how big a role they played in initiating a ban into the California constitution that would bar same-sex couples from getting married. According to AP, "the investigation does not mean there was any wrongdoing, only that commission staff have found evidence to warrant further inquiry."
Ask SFist: A Call for Constructive Prop. 8 Overturning Tactics
Is it out of your system yet? While all of this in-fighting, blaming, exempting, and naive attacks of reverse-discrimination (a chortle-inducing term if there ever was one) has been fun, let's get down to brass tacks, folks. SFist is putting out a call for and sites and/or organizations doing any of the following constructive things to help overturn gender and queer discrimination in the state of California.
California Musical Theatre Aristic Director Donated to Prop. 8
Queers are calling for a boycott of the California Musical Theatre -- at least according to the -- after discovering that its artistic director, Scott Eckern, donated $1,000 to Prop. 8. Eckern has been with CMT for over 25 years. Richard Lewis, the organization's executive producer, released this statement regarding the controversy: "Any political action or the opinion of Scott Eckern is not shared by California Musical Theatre. We have a long history of appreciation for the LGBT community and are truly grateful for their longstanding support."
"F*ck Mormons" Sign Removed
CBS 5's Joe Vazquez reports that the big, pink "Fuck Mormons" banner has been removed. While rumors of photoshopping swirled, CBS 5 managed to figure out that, yes, the sign was, in fact, real.
Keith Olbermann, Hollywood Power Players Fume Over Prop. 8
Well, this is pretty powerful stuff. Last night, Keith Olberman's "Special Comment" was about Prop 8.
Scenes from Prop. 8 Protest in Sacramento, CA, 11/9
Sorry to inundate you with even more protest-ness, but this is happening all over the state today, citizens protesting Prop. 8's passing -- e.g., the protest at Oakland's Mormon Temple, the big one happening in Sacramento.
Scenes from Prop. 8 Protest at Oakland's Mormon Temple, 11/9
As we mentioned already, a protest at the Mormon temple in Oakland forced the CHP to shut down some Highway 13 ramps. Here are some shots of today's protest in progress.
Thousands Gather for Prop 8. Protest March, 11/7, San Francisco
With four helicopters flying overhead, we had no idea what to expect at Market and Seventh Street in terms of turnout.
It was huge. Massive.

Protest Prop 8 March on Friday
Wish you went to last night's Prop. 8 protest instead of watching Dancing with the Stars? Well, you get another chance. Tomorrow there will be an even bigger protest (Friday) against Prop 8. The march will start at Civic Center at 5:30 p.m., ending in Dolores Park. (Interesting that it's not ending at an LDS temple. That seems to be what's going on in LA today.) It will be going down Market from Seventh, continuing onto Castro and turn on 18th Street which will lead to the park.
Prop. 8 Opinion: Let's Just Ban Marriage Altogether
Shamelessly breaking boundaries here at SFist, we're letting budding SFist star Tiffany Maleshefski use the first-person voice with this opinion piece. Not because youu Editor necessarily disagrees with the sentiment; it just works better this way.
Thousands Protest Over Prop. 8
Here was the scene last night at City Hall, where over 2,000 people protested Proposition 8's passing.
Scene from a Crime Wave Peace March
Jim Herd, the Notorious S.I.G., and Jesse Friedman were at the Crime Wave Peace March (or Crime Wave March, depending on your news source) last night. Be sure to check out all of their photos showing what went down. Here are a few more as well.
Crime Wave Peace March Tonight
Prepare your candles, mourning attire, and faces full of fear. A peace march is happening tonight in the Mission district, so that everyone can collectively be all WTF regarding the "wave of violence that has alarmed residents and prompted increased police presence" in the neighborhood. Hosted by Mission Education Project Inc. and the Lower 24th Street Merchant & Neighborhood Association, concerned citizens will gather at 6:30 p.m. at 24th Street and Treat Avenue. The march is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. sharp. Aside from making people better, we're not sure what this will accomplish; but stay safe out there during the march, people. (CBS 5)
Milk Finishes Shooting, '70s Fashions Abound
Well, it's been fun. The trailers, the megawatt celebrity sightings, the lights, the cameras, the not being invited to cast/crew parties -- SFist will miss it all. As most of you know, Gus Van Sant's biopic -- the story of assassinated San Francisco Supervisor and gay rights advocate, Harvey Milk -- started shooting in January. This past Sunday, the production came to an end. Alas.
More Milk Extras Needed for March Reenactment
Starting this week, as we all know by now, Palme d'Or-winning writer/directer Gus Van Sant starts filming Milk on our pretty yet smelly streets. But Gustave needs your help, folks. On Monday night, Feb. 4, and Friday night, Feb. 8, he will require you use your thespionic skills during several march reenactments. If you go here and register, you will be used. All ages, races and genders are just dandy; however, you must be 18 or over to participate. Alas.
