KRON4 reports that the most recent of these was the armed robbery of a postal carrier in Dublin that happened at 4:30 pm Monday on Obispo Court. And as KTVU points out, the mail carrier who was robbed was a 63-year-old woman.

KTVU obtained security camera footage from a neighbor, which is seen in the segment above. The mail carrier is simply placing mail into a mailbox, when the masked suspects approach her from behind. One of them clearly places a gun to her head and demands her mail keys, then they force her to her mail vehicle to take her cellphone, and run off.

"Somebody came up behind me and ‘boom,’ just hit me ,and put a gun to my head," the mail carrier told KTVU. “He said, 'Give me your keys. You don't want to die, do you?' I go no, no, no. So I reached in, got my keys, and he goes, 'Where's your phone? In April, we saw an SF mail carrier robbed of mail in an incident affecting recipients in the 94110 zip code. In May, a postal worker was robbed in Antioch, and that same month, an SF man was indicted for firing at least 15 gunshots at a mail carrier, and another postal worker was robbed in the Western Addition. Yet another of these incidents happened last week, as NBC Bay Area reports a postal worker was robbed in the Richmond District.

A USPS mail carrier was robbed in a normally-quiet San Francisco neighborhood Friday. https://t.co/ZfEwLjjiAC
— NBC Bay Area (@nbcbayarea) August 1, 2023

NBC Bay Area describes this robbery as a “targeted hit on a female carrier,” and says the robbery occurred Friday at noon on 26th Avenue. Every time we catch up with a mail thief, they are armed,” Matthew Norfleet of the U.S. Postal Service’s law enforcement branch U.S. Postal Inspection Service told NBC Bay Area.

The station adds that there are currently dozens of investigations ongoing into postal-carrier robberies in the Bay Area. But they’ve also caused Trump some pretty bad publicity over the collateral damage of late-arriving paychecks and delayed deliveries of medicine, which have affected liberals and conservatives equally across the country. So what seemed like a left-wing pet issue when Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the House back from recess yesterday to vote on prohibiting further postal cutbacks, has quickly become very bipartisan, and Trump’s hand-picked postmaster general appears to have blinked. The New York Times reports that Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has now suspended any further changes to post office procedures (or so he says, at least), and they will not eliminate overtime for mail carriers, cut back hours at post offices, or remove any more mailboxes.

“They felt the heat,” Pelosi told the Times, amidst calls for hearings in the Republican-led Senate, and a bipartisan slate of 22 attorneys general suing the Trump administration over the delays. “And that’s what we’re trying to do, make it too hot for them to handle.”

But Pelosi brought the heat close to home too, as KPIX reports she spoke at the Bayview post office at Lane and Third Streets this morning, in an appearance you can watch below.

Americans rely on the Postal Service to deliver them all. Today, Democrats are sending a strong message to the Trump Administration: Don’t mess with the Postal Service!
Posted by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday, August 18, 2020

“It’s in the Constitution. The Constitution of the United States calls for the establishment of a postal service” Pelosi said, going on to cite both Ben Franklin and Abraham Lincoln’s work with the US Postal Service. “They’re trying to undo it. Why? Because they want to interfere with the election. But they’ve been after the post office for a while. Why? Because they want to privatize it, they don’t want to have to give workers the respect they should have.”

Other speakers at the Bayview events included letter carriers, someone who’s mailbox had been removed, and a veteran with epilepsy who depends on the postal service for medication. Bayview's supervisor Shamann Walton spoke too, though Pelosi referred to him as “Shamann Walker.”

I am here at our Post Office (at 3rd and Lane) to say thank you to Speaker Pelosi and her office for pushing the Post Office to do the right thing. Walton said. “And now he’s playing dirty tricks and trying to rob us of our constitutional right to get our mail.”

It was brought up that postmaster general DeJoy had said he would suspend the changes, but Pelosi sounded skeptical. “I don’t frankly trust the postmaster general in what he said,” she told assembled reporters. “And if he’s sincere about it, it means the bully has backed off.”

Pelosi’s rhetorical delivery has of course lost a step (she’s 80 years old), but the speeches from regular folk who are being jobbed out of their mail deliveries were brutal and effective. Frankly, this is what the Democrats ought to be doing in their prepackaged livestream convention that resumes tonight — get veterans, sick people, and the elderly out there, and let them tell their heartbreaking stories about how slow mail is disrupting the hell out of their lives and health. These could really improve that honestly pretty crappy first hour of the convention broadcast, which last night, felt pretty mailed-in.

Related: Speaker Pelosi Calls Back House From Recess To Deal With Postal Service Crisis [SFist]

Image: Shamann Walton via Twitter

Today's The Last Day To Decline SF's Printed, 300-Page Voter Info Pamphlet

The USPS, however, would prefer you kept on getting it by mail.

SF News

ballot measures

City Hall

election 2016

mail

opting out

usps

Eve Batey

The alphabet-busting roster of San Francisco ballot propositions voters will decide on November 8 have made for a massive information pamphlet, the booklet every registered voter will receive by mail in advance of the election...unless, as hoped by SF's Department of Elections, you get on the ball today and opt to read the document online instead.

This year's 300-plus-page voter information booklet (if you can call anything that's 300 pages long a "booklet") is "one of the largest pamphlets ever produced" in San Francisco, Department of Elections Director John Arntz says.

The pamphlet, for those of you who don't still have the copy of the last election's by your toilet, contains the legally-required "candidate statements, legal text of local ballot measures, and ballot arguments in favor of and against each measure," Arntz says. While earlier this summer San Francisco's Board of Supervisors managed to narrow the local measure count down from 40, the document is still incredibly long — and that's not even counting the California State voter info packet, which the Chron reports is a separate 224 page document.

San Francisco's .925 lb tome will go to every one of the city's 471,123 registered voters, unless they opt out in favor of reading the information online. So far, about 5,865 voters have done just that — but the deadline to decline the paper version is today, so if you want out, act fast by opting out online here or by calling 415-554-4375.

Of course, there's one party displeased by the push to take the pamphlet online: The United States Postal Service. When contacted by the Chron regarding the DoE's encouragement to opt out of the paper version, USPS spokesperson Augustine Ruiz sniped that “We are no different from any other business where a drop in business, in this case mail, is a drop in revenue. And no business would find this very pleasing.”

When asked if the heavy manuals might be an undue burden on postal workers, Ruiz was equally dismissive, saying that “Our carriers are accustomed to heavy loads ... (and) wouldn’t have an issue with delivering it.” (Tell that to the mail carriers on my route, who complain to me — at great length — when my multitudes of September fashion magazines arrive.)

For those OK with depriving the USPS of business, Arntz says that instead of the booklet, you'll get "a link via email in early October to view the pamphlet on sfelections.org." But opt out sooner rather than later, as if you fail to decline the print version by the end of today, your mail carrier will be HAPPILY delivering that big-ass book to you next month.
What's more, residents in the 94109 zip code — which is believed to be specifically at risk — remain vulnerable as changing all the impacted locks is a massive, expensive, and time-consuming task.

The story first came to light in August when KTVU reported that a pair of suspected thieves had been captured on surveillance video stealing mail from a Van Ness Avenue building. What made the situation so unnerving was that unlike your average package thief, these two had what appeared to be a USPS master key — allowing them to buzz themselves in to multi-unit apartment buildings and open all the mailboxes inside.

Buildings in Japantown, Cow Hollow, and Fort Mason were reported to have been hit by the duo.

We reached out to US Postal Inspector Jeff Fitch of the San Francisco division for an update on the case, and he assured us that investigators are working hard in conjunction with the San Francisco Police Department to find these two. "Our goal is to identify the individuals and arrest them," he told SFist by phone. "These things do take some time."

Fitch assured us that he knows residents in the 94109 zip code are frustrated that the thieving pair haven't been caught, and that he and his office are taking this case extremely seriously. "Right now we're actively investigating this and attempting to catch up with these individuals," he explained before adding that the mere possession of the key is punishable by up to ten years in federal prison.

When pressed as to just how, exactly, the key fell into wrong hands, Fitch wouldn't say — noting that how the key was acquired, and whether it is genuine or counterfeit, is part of the investigation.

But as time drags on, those living in the 94109 zip code are still at risk. SFist pressed Fitch on whether or not locks were being changed — a process that KTVU reports could cost at least $200,000 — but he would only say that "the Postmaster is assessing that right now" and that "if we were changing the locks we wouldn't announce it either — we try not to telegraph what we're doing security wise."

This is not the first time a lost, stolen, or counterfeit USPS master key has made the news in recent years. The Napa Valley Register reports that one was "lost" in 2011, and The Eastersider reported last year that thieves had likely scored a master key in LA's Silverlake neighborhood.

This fits a pattern of increased mail theft in California identified by Fitch, noting that his agency has seen other instances of master key theft and counterfeiting in the Golden State before. When asked whether or not he believed the suspected criminals pictured above were still actively out there stealing mail, Fitch declined to say. "I don't want to speculate on what they may or may not be up to, but they appear to be very comfortable with what they're doing — while they're drinking coffee," he explained, referencing surveillance video showing the thieves casually carrying coffee cups as they went about their illegal business.

There is a $10,000 reward for tips leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is behind the recent spate of mail thefts. Anyone with knowledge can call Fitch's office at 877-876-2455, and residents of the 94109 zip code who may have been impacted should email usps94109@usps.gov directly.

Police are on the lookout for two thieves they say have gone on a mail-stealing spree across San Francisco. According to Fox 2, the man and the woman appear to have obtained a USPS master key — the thing that allows mailmen to gain access to apartment building lobbies and open mailboxes — and are using it to steal credit cards, passports, and other valuable documents.

Video surveillance from one building on Van Ness Avenue depicts the alleged criminals at work during what is one of the three times they are accused of striking that very same building. "I was amazed they were totally relaxed [when] they walked in," resident Caxton Rhodes explained to the channel. "[They] knew exactly what they were doing especially when they're carrying — they both have cups of coffee! These guys had stolen [a new credit card] on Thursday, well, on Saturday, they charged like $5000 in charges to local businesses."

What makes this case so crazy is that unlike with your run-of-the-mill package thieves, possession of the USPS master key means this duo can physically enter multi-unit apartment buildings — so even things left inside by your neighborhood deliveryman are still vulnerable.

Officials say buildings in Japantown, Cow Hollow, and Fort Mason have all been targeted, and that they can't immediately do anything about it — changing all the vulnerable locks would cost at least $200,000 and will take some time. Mailboxes in the 94109 zip code are believed to be specifically at risk.

"The mere possession of one of those keys is a federal felony, [and the] potential penalty is up to 10 years in federal prison," U.S Postal Service Inspector Jeff Fitch told Fox 2.

Somehow, we don't think that fact will be much of a deterrent. But hey, at least they're not stealing entire mail trucks.

Stealing mail, in addition to being a federal offense, is just a plain old dick move. Stealing an entire mail truck, full of mail, the week before taxes are due, is so seriously messed up that we don't even know where to begin. But that's exactly what happened this past Saturday in Oakland, reports KRON4, and police are at a loss as to what happened to all the truck's contents.

What's more, investigators don't even know what mail was in the truck — and consequently aren't even sure who the victims are. In other words, if you live near where the truck was stolen (around 36th Avenue in Oakland — no cross street was provided), you may or may not be totally screwed.

“If anybody realizes, in the next week or two, if they get a credit card statement or a bank statement and any unusual activity, contact us immediately,” US Postal Inspector Jeff Fitch told KRON 4. “That is information that will lead us to the individuals.”

The truck was out for delivery, parked and locked, when it was stolen while the postal employee was doing her route on foot. Police eventually found the truck, but, you guessed it, all the mail was gone.

There's a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the individual or individuals behind the theft, and the crime is punishable by up to five years in a federal prison.

It's not just the food movement that's "slow" in the Bay Area. Postal Service employees in San Francisco move far less mail every hour than is typical of a processing and distribution center, according to a report from the Office of the Inspector General at the United States Postal Service, all caused by solvable issues that waste as much as $21 million a year.

The report, released this week and flagged by the Washington Examiner, states that the San Francisco Processing and Distribution Center "did not attain the efficiency achieved by similarly sized P&DCs." During 2013 "the San Francisco P&DC processed mail at a rate of 795 pieces per workhour, whereas the similarly sized P&DC at the median productivity level processed mail at the rate of 1,054 pieces per workhour. Accordingly, the San Francisco P&DC processed 259 fewer pieces per workhour than the comparable P&DC."

Why you do this, San Francisco mail? The report has a few answers: little processing occurred per hour "because management did not adjust workhours to workload, analyze operational efficiency through benchmarking, adequately supervise employees, or fully utilize automation equipment. Consequently, the facility was using more workhours than necessary to process mail volume."

At the same time, there's less and less mail overall being processed in SF, where last year our facility handled about 1.41 billion pieces of mail, a decrease of 8.6 percent from 2012.

According to The Office of the Inspector General, "We identified specific mail processing functional areas that could be more efficient, resulting in 486,781 fewer workhours and an annual cost avoidance of over $21 million."

In 2013 the postal service reported a loss of about $5 billion, so would $21 million in savings right here in San Francisco help? It sure couldn't hurt.

However, it's worth noting that the savings come at a cost: 280 jobs, to be exact. According to the Inspector General, "To save the recommended 486,781 workhours, the P&DC needs about 280 fewer employees." Is San Francisco's post office ready and willing to lay off 280 people? We won't be holding our breath.

Gmail Introduces New Inbox, Automatically Filters Annoying Email

Hot on the heels of the slick new Maps redesign, Google announced an update for Gmail today that will further de-clutter you...

SF News

email

gmail

Google

Inbox

mail

Technology in San Francisco & Silicon Valley

updates

Andrew Dalton

Hot on the heels of the slick new Maps redesign, Google announced an update for Gmail today that will further de-clutter your messy inbox. Unlike the Priority Inbox the ubiquitous email service introduced a few years back, the new inbox filters items based on varying levels of spammy-ness: from personal emails or ticket confirmations, to those constant daily deals and the never-ending flood of social network notifications.

The new features are similar to what you could do before by setting up filters and automatic labels, except without all the hassle of doing that yourself. Each section of you inbox (Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates, etc) is displayed as a tab across the top and is easily customized so you can delete emails you were never going to read even faster than before.

Along with the new desktop version, starts rolling out today, the iOS and Android mobile versions will be upgraded in the next few weeks as well. If you hate deleting Groupon emails as much as we do -- or even Google deals, if we may -- you'll want to keep an eye on the Gear menu in the top right of your Gmail for the "Configure Inbox" option.

Naturally, there's a video to walk you through it while you listen to the Marvellettes:

Now the postal service is selling off whole post offices in the Bay Area, with eight currently on the market and more to come. So far, only one large S.F. post office is for sale, and that's the 10,000-square-foot North Beach Annex at 2200 Powell Street. But it won't stop there.

Several more San Francisco post offices are being "studied" by the USPS to determine if they will be closed. These include the Civic Center Post-Office box unit at Hyde and Golden Gate, McLaren Station (94134), Visitacion Station (94134), and Bayview Station (94124). (See the full list of "access study" stations here.)

We're not sure much can be done about any of these except, perhaps, writing a letter to Nancy Pelosi. Good luck with that.

It Might Disappear Soon">
One very visible symbol of the shift from snail mail to email and all forms of electronic communication: Those blue mail boxes are disappearing! San Francisco's lost about 800 in the last couple of years, and dozens more are slated to disappear. Across the country, the USPS has killed off 60% of the boxes, bringing the total down to 160,000, down from 400,000 in 1985.

The postal workers are actually counting the number of pieces of mail going into boxes over a six to eight week period, and if it averages less than 25 pieces of mail a day, the box gets slated for removal. "To be honest, we don't get a lot of complaints," says a spokesman for the postal service in San Francisco. And we're sure those complaints come from old ladies.

But anyhow, the decline in use of the mails started way before the internet -- when more women went to work in the 1970s, and long-distance calls became cheaper, letter writing declined, and the culling of boxes began.

And he's right! He sort of is! And here they are!

Pixar characters will be available in stamp form late next year. Which is great. When we mail our monthly rent check, we can blubber like a Romanian orphan child as we did during the conclusions of Up and Toy Story 3.
