According to the Chronicle, while trying to catch a train at the Embarcadero station Tuesday night at around 6 p.m., a man got his hand trapped in the door of an L-line and was dragged along the platform. As he was seconds away from a fatal encounter with the approaching wall, a passenger inside the car pulled the little red emergency release par and the car stopped.

We meant to post on this yesterday but the afternoon kind of got away from us (thank goodness today's Veterans' Day! Thank you, veterans!). An electrical short near the Castro Street MUNI station disabled all the K, L, and M MUNI streetcar lines for three hours yesterday afternoon. They got it fixed around 4, so the afternoon commute wasn't as bad as it could have been. MUNI spokesperson Maggie Lynch apologizes.
--San Jose is outraged that people think it's less safe than New York. Outraged!
Well, on the down side, they're now charging so much for cable cars ($5) that no one wants to ride them anymore. On the up side, no one's going to be able to ride them anyways -- at least not today! Cable car service on both the Powell-Mason line and the California line are down all day after alarms went off on both lines, indicating possible damage to the cable.
--Why's Lawrence Wong getting in so much trouble for accidentally crossing a picket line when the Bay Area Reporter did too?
What a pain! It looks like an N Judah train has shuffled off this mortal coil somewhere between the Embarcadero and Caltrain stations this afternoon.
So MUNI claims that your morning commute from the Sunset should be okay today, after yesterday's debacle in the Twin Peaks tunnel. Turns out there was indeed a derailment (of an L train, at 7:50 a.m.) in the tunnel, and the initial reports of an electrical problem were incorrect. Also, it turns out that this was the second derailment on MUNI in seven days. Where was the first derailment?
Hey, take one guess: what's the worst place on the web for finding up-to-date news about Muni? That would be Muni's very own website, of course, which despite having a section for "new links" bears absolutely no mention of its new study showing that fifty percent of riders don't pay. Maybe Muni doesn't want anyone to know! ...Or maybe they didn't post that news because EVERYONE ALREADY KNEW. Nice work, Muni; what did you spend, like, several thousand dollars to figure out the obvious? Maybe next you'll do a study to investigate the possibility that sometimes, drivers can be surly.
We would like to sincerely thank everyone who has offered their stories, thoughts and support in this matter. We were honestly expecting maybe half a dozen people to show up tomorrow, but now we think that it's going to be a lot bigger, which is awesome. This story seems to have really touched a nerve! We notified local press and relevant city agencies through an official press release [PDF] yesterday. Once again, it's tomorrow, Saturday, at noon. Please assemble quietly at the Embarcadero Station Muni Fare Gate. We'll be catching a train at 12:30, and finishing around 2:00 at the Castro station if you miss us.
