A new audit this week by the Alliance for Audited Media shows us that while big international news orgs like the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times are boasting healthy circulations in print and online forms, local newspapers are seeing rapidly dwindling audiences and revenues. And magazines aren't doing so well either.

It's telling that the top two slots in the ranking of magazine circulations are occupied by AARP's two magazine titles, and both by a lot. The two have circulations of 22 million readers, while next in line in-print circulation are two other titles the elderlies love: Better Homes & Gardens, and Reader's Digest at 7.6 million and 5.2 million respectively. Magazine sales, as in newsstand sales, are pretty crappy too; they fell 10% in the first half of this year.

Magazines did manage to double their digital subscription base this year, likely via the popularity of tablets.

Newspaper circulation numbers, meanwhile, have seen a steady decline since the 1980s. As the Journal's Jason Bellini reports, about 63 million daily papers were being bought back in 1985, and that number is now about 45 million. And while people are willing to spend money for digital subscriptions to newspapers that cover a range of stories of national interest, like the NYT, other papers like the Washington Post and [cough] the San Francisco Chronicle aren't seeing the same success in luring paid online subscribers. The Chronicle, in fact, just slipped off the ranking of the top 25 circulated papers in the country for the first time in decades this year, with a total combined digital/print circulation of 219,000 as of March. (The figure for digital circulation post-paywall is not available at this time.)

The NYT boasts a circulation of 1.2 million daily readers now, and the WSJ has double that, at 2.4 million, with a bigger percentage of print readers.

The value of locally focused newspapers continues to slip as these numbers decline. Just this week, as you likely heard, Jeff Bezos bought the Washington Post for a cool $250 million after posting a 14 percent earnings loss, and the New York Times Company sold off the Boston Globe at a significant loss 20 years after they bought it — the purchase price in 1993 was $1.1 billion, and not adjusting for inflation they still took a bath selling it at $70 million.

What does it all mean? It means that local papers had better quickly catch up in terms of online ad revenue and digital subscriptions if they're going to survive, but it remains to be seen how many digital subscriptions the average newshound is willing to pay for when there's a whole free internet there to inform them.

Et tu, Wintour?

Gone is the magazine's use of underage, wafer-thin models that promote eating disorders and thus further the war on women in the name of fashion, society's greatest hoax. (Ha, kidding! All of that, sadly, still happens.) Digesting is in. And in the July issue of Vogue, the owner of Tartine and Bar Tartine, Chad Robertson, gets a beautiful, dare we say Grace Coddington-esque spread in the style rag of choice.

Furthermore, they go on to describe Robertson as "the cult prince of American breadmaking." (Did they mean "demon"? It stands with reason that the editorial staff at Vogue would probably file breadmaking under the category of demonic arts. Anyway.) A perfect title as Robertson's bread skills are royally remarkable.

Look for the issue to hit newsstands soon, with that Katy Perry girl on the cover.

They really never cease to elicit a chuckle — except for French Vogue, of course, which is very, very serious. Behold this new piece in Vogue India in which a blogger describes the various neighborhoods in San Francisco, through a young Indian transplant's eyes.

After putting in some time here, she has of course discovered Bi-Rite Creamery, Dolores Park, and Ritual, and she has figured out where everyone disappears to in the last week of August. But she's still a little wide-eyed about our tech- and food-happy paradise, and she has not gotten the memo about the overuse of the term 'hipster.'

To wit:

Pass by the glassy-eyed city professionals lining up for yet another cup of interminably extracted Chilean drip coffee from Ritual Roasters, and watch as they diligently Facebook-update their whereabouts as they head on to the Jazz Center on Franklin Street. In the city of a million mobile apps, you get your rides via Uber and your news on your iPad; and nobody will dispute the crowdsourced authority of a rating from Yelp.

Swedish House Mafia will fly in for a night to DJ a party in a killer renovated theater hall in the gritty Tenderloin neighbourhood for a room full of tech geeks in their twenties, and glossy, well-dressed girls they met via OkCupid will slink around them.

If Jack Dorsey walks into a bar in North Beach, heads turn and tweets go out. But a sighting of Anne Hathaway at Flour + Water is just passé, you’re more busy recommending the 2006 Brunello to fellow superusers on Foursquare.

...

People don’t go to work here; they follow their passions in offices parading as super-slick warehouse lofts stocked with art, colour, music, inspiration. And out of these emerge the apps that we play with, the devices we carry around in our pockets, and use to interact with and capture pieces of our incredibly distinct worlds in panoramic, microscopic, open, broken, tinted sepia, fluorescent, rose-hued Instagram effects.

Ugh.

Bon Appetit's Top 50 Best New Restaurants of 2012 unleashed itself upon a hungry, list-loving world today. Among their favorite rookie joints: AQ and State Bird Provisions. The mag's restaurant editor Andrew Knowlton had kind things to say about both establishments, of course.

Regarding AQ, "I could recommend several dishes I ate here in the spring, but by the time you eat here they'll be gone—the menu (and the decor) changes four times a year, taking seasonality to a new level." (He liked the soft potato gnocchi and Churchill's Bane cocktail.) And as for State Bird Provisions: "Husband and wife Stuart Brioza and Nicole Krasinski have returned with this dim sum-style spot where appetizers (they call them 'provisions') are wheeled around the room on trolleys. The duo's inventive small plates make it all work." (He loved the fried quail and "World Peace" dessert.)

We can safely say that, indeed, AQ is everything it's cracked up to be. And then some, really. We have yet to visit Provisions, but do look forward to trying some peace and quail at some point in the very near future.

The list will narrow down to ten, then one lucky winner will be crowned America's prettiest baby. Be sure to secure a reservation at both AQ and State Bird Provisions before your most obnoxious, shortsighted friend declares either fine establishment to be "over."

Hey, you. Yes, you. Sitting there glazed-over and glassy-eyed from staring at your preferred choice of online viewing. Listen up: did you know that changes are afoot in the world of local print publishing? It's true. And this time the news involves neither embarrassing attempts to regain ad revenue nor pathetic blanket statements about the future of media from brain-dead journalists. It's good news. Shocking, but true. Here we go:

First, 7x7's executive editor Chloé Harris has given the magazine a much-needed makeover. It's smaller, tighter, and even got its spine back. Literally. We're hearing that they're seeking a fresh new load of writers, photographers, illustrators, and more —e.g., Ethan Watters wrote a piece for their April issue. Their most recent issue, the fashion one, is worthy of picking up or stealing from your dentist's office.

As for the city's other glossy mag, Modern Luxury's San Francisco Magazine, they done got themselves a shiny new EIC. Jon Steinberg (the one who's not the president of BuzzFeed) spent the last six years at New York magazine, focusing on the "Strategist" section. He's also won several National Magazine Awards. Fancy. However, we have yet to find his Twitter or Facebook, so we have yet to form a thoughtful opinion of him. Nevertheless, good luck and welcome to Baghdad by the Bay, Jon!

And finally, had you ever checked out Oakland Magazine? We had not. But their latest issue is all about beer, so it can't be half bad.

Behold Tim Lincecum's New York Times Style Magazine Cover

Featuring an adorable cover shot of the two-time Cy Young Award winner, SF Giants star Tim Lincecum</st...

SF News

baseball

Giants

lincecum

magazines

New York Times

sfgiants

Bay Area Sports

Style

tim lincecum

Brock Keeling

<img src="https://img.sfist.com/assets_c/2011/03/timnymagcover-thumb-640xauto-605712.jpg" alt="Behold Tim Lincecum's New York Times Style Magazine Cover">

San Francisco came in at number 11. ELEVEN! How is that possible, you ask, when by some accounts one in five men in this town prefers the penis to the vagina, and where we basically invented gay marriage AND glory holes? Well, it's possible because the Sadvocate used some asinine formula involving Gay.com memberships (hint: no one uses that site anymore), yellow pages entries with the word 'gay' in them (no one uses those either), number of openly gay elected officials (we have lots), number of Tegan and Sara concerts in the last five years, and the number of gay wedding officiants, which they obviously got wrong.

Which cities to they judge to be gayer than the gayest city on the planet? St. Louis! Vancouver, WA which is like 150,000 people! Pittsburgh, for christ's sake! And what's number one? Minneapolis. Does anyone who has lived in Minneapolis actually think that place is gayer than S.F.? Now really.

Don't they know we have our own gay museum now?!!

Do we even need to explain how ridiculous this is? Who reads the Advocate, we ask you? The kind of elder gays whose straight counterparts still watch the evening news, that's who. And they have just further cemented their irrelevance by invoking Gay.com and failing to use simple demographic and census information, which we believe would prove them perfectly silly and ignorant. (Full census data for 2010, which is only really going to count out gay couples and families, not singles, and already shows a massive number of them in Jacksonville, Florida, will be released soon.) And no, Advocate, Cleveland is not about to become a gay hot spot just because the Gay Games are happening there in three years.

Rolling Stone Blasts Anti-Gay Rolling Stone

Anti-gay marriage and hateful citizens, unite!
Anti-gay marriage and hateful citizens, unite! A fake Rolling Stone based in Africa has been dishing out "one of the most vile and hateful anti-gay screeds," ever! And the real Rolling Stone, which got its start here in San Francisco, is none too thrilled.

The realRolling Stone issued this statement on their site today:

A new newspaper out of Uganda bearing the name Rolling Stone has published one of the most vile and hateful anti-gay screeds we have ever read. The article printed the addresses and photos of 100 homosexuals in the country, calling for them to be hanged. Not only are we not affiliated in any way with the Ugandan paper, we have demanded they cease using our name as a title. But there is a larger issue at stake: Homosexuality is still a crime in much of Africa, often punishable by life in prison. “Half the world’s countries that criminalize homosexual conduct do so because they cling to Victorian morality and colonial laws,” says Scott Long of Human Rights Watch. “Getting rid of these unjust remnants of the British empire is long overdue.”

This is what, say, your average bully or Tea Party sect member might decry as an example of Rolling Stone's intolerance of another person's point of view, intolerance of another person's right to hate freely no matter the cost. Many people were. Last night's 5.6 earthquake, which we didn't feel but hear the majority of you did, tore nerves to shreds, shook the ground, and sent magazines flying to the floor.

In a little over 12 hours, it managed to cause quite the stir. Some people were in the middle of dinner when it happened. Others blogged about it. Some from a faraway land called Walnut Creek broke down local media coverage of it, and liqufaction was threatened.

But it's all over. For now.

We'd like to start this week's run-down by wishing a very happy birthday to parent blog Gothamist, which turned four on Friday. If it wasn't for them, the rest of us wouldn't be here. They celebrated their birthday by nabbing an interview with star Adrian Grenier, who misses NYC public transportation when he's working in LA. They also reported on NYU students protesting a band whose name is also known as a slur, the new graffiti king in town, Bill Cosby's adorable dog, and the disturbing tale of a yoga instructor who was found guilty of killing his girlfriend, a dancer from Ohio who stripped to make ends meet.

Bostonist is grateful that the Celtics broke their losing streak on Valentine's Day—perhaps the players girlfriends were withholding the slam dunk until they won! They were also all about Valentine's Day: they made sausage, taught breaking up 2.0, and shopped for Barbie Dolls that were suspiciously like the ones in San Francisco.

Torontoist wasn't sure how they felt about four Greenpeace activists chaining themselves together in the offices of Kleenex's manufacturer. They hunted down the remains of Microsoft's Windows Vista Ice House, and wondered about the future of their men's magazines after the death of one.

Phillyist got pretty into local politics this week, what with their wacky local mayoral race and being Facebooked by city council candidates. They also stumbled across some sweet vintage concert footage and, in honor of Valentine's Day, listed ten things to love about Philly.

Each issue is clearly themed, although recycling and reusing have been common threads throughout ReadyMade's life span.
The guests then tied up traffic on Van Ness (we know, because we got caught in it on our way to dinner) as they spilled out of City Hall and across the street to the Opera House, which had three searchlights spinning around at full beam.

Inside the Opera House, SFMike reports that the $20 standing-room ticket (reduced from $25 due to a typo in the Examiner) entitled you to some "pretty decent" free champagne, and that the dancing was exquisite. Fondue went out of fashion in the 1980s, but only after it had been in fashion so long that it became trite. Only in the last few years have food magazines unearthed their old fondue features. Dig your fondue pot out of the closet, or pull it off that high shelf, and whip together a batch for you and your friends to enjoy.
