They've hired some new band members since we last saw them, so maybe they are better now - let us know if they are.

Down in SoCal, LAist reviewed Ani DiFranco, who will be here on Tuesday at the Fillmore. They declared their undying love for her and called her performance "enthusiastic, exuberant, and at times, brilliant." Not bad - apparently it was their 13th time seeing DiFranco - talk about some biased reporting.

Thursday night, if you haven't already bought your tickets to the Panic at the Disco show at the Warfield then you are out of luck, it's sold out. (But once again, we've found plenty of options on craigslist!) Instead, head over to The Independent where RJD2 will be playing. Paste Magazine calls them, "hip-hop's most adventurous musical astronaut." Listen to "Beyond the Beyond" and "Get It". Straight from their press release we quote, "This tour promises some new surprises, while RJ displays his incredibly dexterous musicianship in switching effortlessly from guitar and keyboards to bass to the turntables." Looks like the perfect mix.

*FILM: She Done Him Wrong (1933) screens at the Castro Tonight. What's is about? Well, according to CinemaSource, "Lady Lou works as a singer at the Gay Nineties saloon of Gus Jordan, who plays her with diamonds to keep her by his side. She runs afoul of stalwart Salvation Army captain Cummings, who warns her that she''s on the road to perdition. Though Lou herself steers clear of criminal activities, Gus Jordan runs a counterfeiting and white slavery ring. Also, Lou's ex-lover Chick Clark has been sent to jail for stealing diamonds for her. Things come to a boil when Chick breaks prison and goes gunning for Lou." But for all intents and purposes, it's that film where Mae West coos to Cary Grant, ""Why don't you come up some time and see me?" (Which was then changed to "...see me sometime" for her next movie, I'm No Angel.) <mtinclude blog_id="24" module="Corolla: Crest"> </mtinclude>

CLUB: Tonight's Noise Pop afterparty, intriguingly titled "Italians Do It Better In San Francisco," will be held at...Harlot. Why not? DJ Mike Simonetti spins tonight. We look forward to not remembering what happens tonight come tomorrow morning.

ART: Tonight's "Experimental Film & Video Art Series" over at Varnish Gallery, which happens on the last Wednesday of every month, features strong work by Bay Area women filmmakers. According to SF Weekly, "Terrie Samundra, known for her short film A Short Tale of Xuan; dreamy, glowing, impressionistic work by Vanessa Woods; and Jill Johnston-Price's animations are all curated by Scarlett Shepard, founder of the San Francisco Women's Film Festival." Yay! And you can get dunk off of some of the choicest wines in the Bay Area to boot.

--The SF DA's office is dropping the murder charge against the man SFPD arrested for the murder in the middle of the day at the Ella Mae Hutch community center back in March. This is the second murder case they've dropped for lack of evidence; look for the finger-pointing to begin shortly.

--A Global Exchange employee wearing a t-shirt that said "We Will Not Be Silent" in English and Arabic was denied entry onto an Oakland-bound Jet Blue flight in NYC on August 12 (2 days after the UK scare). He was reportedly told, "Going to an airport with a T-shirt in Arabic script is like going to a bank and wearing a T-shirt that says, 'I'm a robber.'" He ended up on the flight after putting on another t-shirt on over it, but ended up losing his original seat for one in the back. Hey, all seats get the same 40 DirecTV channels, we hear.

--and the president of Cal's Pi Lambda Phi fraternity has complained that overly-zealous undercover cops tried to bust into their rush party by falsely claiming to be with Gamma, the Greek system's watchdog group. The president of Delta Chi says he's fine with it, but wonders why the cops are policing his barbecues so closely anyways.

Another Hole In The Head: The Ghost of Mae Nak and Dark Remains

, right down to the spirit's long, stringy hair and ability to kill folks just by showing up and looking creepy.

Arts & Entertainment

Arts+Events

As

DVD

film

hair

Mae

Thai

The Ghost

The Grudge

The Ring

Eve Batey

<img src="https://img.sfist.com/assets_c/2009/04/entry53180_thumb-thumb-640xauto-133169.jpg" alt="Another Hole In The Head: The Ghost of Mae Nak and Dark Remains">
Though the haunted newlyweds at the film's center are just too cute for words, the more saccharine elements in the film are balanced by several gruesome deaths and some genuinely spooky dream sequences. It's slated for DVD release later this year.

<img alt="Another Hole In The Head: The Ghost of Mae Nak and Dark Remains" src="http://img.sfist.com/attachments/sfist_eve/dark.jpg" width="187" height="177" class="imgright">We saw -- and liked -- director's earlier film, Ghost of the Needle, at HoleHead 2004. We left with and a small armful of other ingredients. FitzHenry's extensive background in marketing is in evidence at her stall: Snifters of richly colored spices invite shoppers to smell her fragrant blends, and her Occasional Gourmet products come in small, resealable envelopes to attract home chefs who "tend to cook as a means of entertainment" or "would like to prepare sophisticated meals at home with easy-to-use ingredients."

But the spices aren't just marketing flash. FitzHenry seeks out high-quality suppliers who use organic sources when possible (she is also looking into Fair Trade spices). She then combines her raw materials to create well-balanced, flavorful blends. "I do a fair amount of research first," she explains, "then I work, rework and tweak the blends by tasting and trying them in a variety of dishes." The result, she says, are spices with "my own signature, a style of blending that is unique to my products."

That's always seemed hyperbolic, but the film itself makes a pretty convincing case. West (at right), more imposing than coquettish as Tira the Lion Tamer, wields physical presence like a boxer and sexuality like a gunslinger throughout the film. From her opening scene, where she's introduced to a carnival crowd as "the girl who discovered you don't need feet to be a dancer," until the end, when she gets her man (Cary Grant, 29 years old and looking about 14, as upstanding society fellow Jack Clayton), Tira owns the screen.

It's not hard to imagine either why I'm No Angel, often considered the last film of pre-code Hollywood, was the breaking straw for the Hays Office, or why Depression-era audiences loved it so much. Tira violates conventions of race, class, and (of course) sex, and she goes entirely unpunished by the plot of the film. Instead, West, who took sole credit for the story, screenplay and dialogue, is careful to give herself the last laugh--the real currency of a film like this one--in every scene. In the climactic trial, she cross-examines much of her romantic history to prove, to a judge and jury with whom she flirts hilariously, that she's "no angel" but that she is, indisputably, a heroine. Here at SFist, we are hard pressed to think of a recent studio film in which a hypersexual female lead gets away with so much.
