SFist's Guide to the World Cup Part 1- Why You Should Care

SFist's Guide to the World Cup Part 1- Why You Should Care

It is customary to start any post about the World Cup by stating that you should care. We won't do that. Y'all know what a big deal it is and how pretty much every part of the world that isn't Canada or the U.S. is effectively shutting itself down for a month to watch. Besides, we have a feeling part of the reason soccer has never really taken off here is because too many people tell you that you have to care. So getting into soccer becomes something like eating broccoli or the metric system or any other things you are told to do because it's good for you. As a result, people here start getting all huffy and get all "nuh-uh, we're 'merican's damnit. We like our sports with non-stop action, lots of beer commercials, and scoreboards telling us when to cheer and when not to cheer, you Euro Weenie One World-ist!" Instead, we're going to try and get you into it by showing you just how much fun the World Cup can be. Picture it not as something you have to do because you have to be like everyone else, but as, well, kind of a way to travel around the world in a month without ever having to leave the city. more ›

All You Need Is Just a Little Patience

All You Need Is Just a Little Patience

After a long, raucous day of debate that lasted even longer than last night's ball game, the Board of Supervisors stared straight into the eyes of several controversial, contentious issues and decided to make a decision later. We start with everyone's favorite topic, or at least SFist's, the medicinal marijuana debate. After holding off on making a decision last week, the Board took it up yesterday and was about to pass the measure before Daly aide Bill Barnes pulled a fast one and derailed it by calling an appeal on environmental concerns. Daly is against the legislation for the fairly understandable reason that due to a lot of the new rules, most of the dispensaries that will be kept open or will be opened will be in his 'hood. He also thinks that all of the new rules and regulations are too restrictive and will lead to many of the dispensaries having to close (which would mean he wouldn't have to worry about too many of them being in his 'hood, but we digress). And by too restrictive, we're guessing he means the fact that dispensaries can only dispense half a pound of marijuana to one person a day (that would be about eight ounces of dope). That's more dope than a van full of Dead Heads on the road to the Bonnaroo Festival could smoke. Or maybe it's because it's so difficult these days to get medical marijuana cards. more ›

Gastronomique: Sous le Soleil Exactement

One of our SFist editors, unfortunately the ill-gendered one, promised to kiss us if we ever wrote a post in French. We have postponed such post thus far, but with the opening of Café du Soleil, we have to put up or shut up: the place is as French as a fry. You will have to excuse our French, which we hid behind some link after the jump, in the hope said editor won't see it. more ›

Fight the Power?

As a member of the Board, Gonzalez has often held art installations in his office, for artists well known and unknown alike. Along with McGee’s bit of graffiti (and by the way, when does graffiti become art? When it’s inside an art studio and not on the 38 Geary? When it’s a little better than your everyday basic “Metallica Rulez” graffiti? When it’s done by white people?), this month’s installation includes the work of another graffiti artist that involves the hanging of five televisions, each showing a different video of young Latinos showing off their tattoos. Roll over DaVinci! Gonzalez has said that once he and his staff moves out, they’ll use their own time and money to paint over the walls which seems fair considering City Hall has been deemed a historical landmark. Either way, here’s hoping Chris “Mad Dog” Daly doesn’t get any ideas from this. more ›
