During her week-long visit, Kerwood had plans to visit Sacramento, Calaveras Big Trees State Park, San Francisco, and Santa Cruz.

The next time Kerwood’s family heard from her was Friday when they received a text saying she was still staying at the hostel. Family friend Ali Zaidi told KTVU that immediately following the text, Kerwood’s family asked to speak to her on the phone — as she’s normally very communicative, and there was no further response. They later discovered she never checked into the hostel.

"She's generally very responsive and the fact that she didn't message for hours is the first signal," Zaidi said. "Second, when she messaged they said, 'Hey, let's get on the phone,' and immediately she didn't respond."

Security footage from SFO showed Kerwood meeting a man there who brought her flowers. Her family later discovered the man’s name is “David,” whom they learned Kerwood had previously met in the UK. Kerwood is reportedly scheduled to return to London Wednesday.

According to KTVU, the case is being investigated by both the San Francisco Police Department and authorities in the United Kingdom. Authorities across California have also been alerted via a statewide law enforcement database.

Image: Inside of San Francisco International airport, International Terminal, San Francisco, California, June 7, 2023.
In SFist’s most recent updates on the case, it was revealed that police still have yet to access Heklina’s cellphone, which they initially shipped to her friend Nancy French, and then French had to return it to them after they sent her a box. It also took two years of persistence from Peaches and French for police to release CCTV footage near the scene of Heklina’s death, which showed three men who are now people of interest.

Additionally, London police admitted to “investigative bias,” which was confirmed in a 2023 report that said the department was “riven with institutional racism, misogyny and homophobia and doesn't do enough to weed out bad officers.”

As Peaches told the Chronicle recently, "I think the bias started happening from the moment she was found. This was considered a dismissed case from the moment we started going down this road.”

The protest will start at London’s Big Ben at 10 a.m. on the 31st, followed by a march to the London Met Police headquarters for speeches and peaceful protest until Noon. Speakers will include Peaches Christ, Scissor Sisters’ Ana Matronic, Cheddar Gorgeous, Crystal, plus more.

In a recent Gscene Magazine post, Peaches spoke of Heklina’s covert kindness:

Heklina was maybe one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. She now tells the Chronicle's Tony Bravo that she knew about the CCTV footage because it had been used early on to clear her as a suspect — she previously said that she had left the flat two days earlier to stay in a hotel so that Heklina could arrange a sexual encounter.

Peaches said she found Heklina in the living room in a "compromising position," and now we also learn that drugs were present on the scene as well.

The CCTV image of the three men.

But the Chronicle also now reports the further detail that not only did the London Metro Police take two years to release the CCTV footage seeking the public's help in identifying the men, they also majorly flubbed another aspect of the case. Without attempting to gain access to Heklina's cellphone, they packed it with her other belongings and shipped it off to back to the states to her "next of kin," who is her friend Nancy French.

French says she informed the London investigators that she had the iPhone in a Zoom call a year ago, in February 2024. It would then take them four more months to send her a box in which to return it to them, and they have yet to be able to access the device without Heklina's pincode. Friends of Heklina say the London cops have been inept and unresponsive.

It has never been suggested that foul play was involved in the April 2023 death of Heklina, aka Stefan Grygelko, or that other people might have been in the apartment she was staying in in the hours before her death. And it may be that foul play is still not suspected. But London Metro police have just publicly released footage for the first time of three men seen on CCTV footage in London's Soho in the early morning hours of April 3, hours before Heklina would be found dead by tour partner and longtime friend Peaches Christ.

As the UK Metro reports, police are asking the men to come forward, with Detective Chief Inspector Dean Purvis saying, "We know that the three men in the CCTV images were at the flat in the early hours of 3 April 2023. I am asking them to contact police. We need to establish what happened, and how Steven [sic] was when they left."

According to friend Nancy French, who was listed as Heklina's "next of kin" when she died, "There is no 'new' news here," adding that she has still been given no death certificate or official cause of death by the London police. "This CCTV footage should have been released 21 months ago. Releasing it now just proves their ineptitude and mismanagement that we’ve been dealing with for almost 2 years."

Peaches Christ, aka Joshua Grannell, adds, "To get the London Police to take more action has been something Nancy and I have been pushing for since the tragedy began.
A series of cock-ups has rideshare Uber arse-deep in trouble on the other side of the pond. In the wake of a Guardian report on sexual assaults committed by Uber drivers, the regulatory transportation authority Transport for London (TfL) has rejected Uber’s license to operate in London according to TechCrunch. (Uber has previously received such a license, but it expires September 30). Using adorably British terminology, TfL declared that Uber “is not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator licence.”

“TfL’s regulation of London’s taxi and private hire trades is designed to ensure passenger safety,” the regulatory body said in a statement. “TfL considers that Uber's approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility in relation to a number of issues which have potential public safety and security implications.”

Business Insider reports that Uber was not aware of the decision “until one minute before the regulator tweeted its statement out publicly.”

In this particular rejection for a license renewal, Uber was dinged on the rigorousness of their background checks and their approach to reporting criminal offenses among drivers and those applying to be drivers. UK authorities also suspect Uber has been using their shady Greyball scheme in England to evade regulators.

This is not a death blow to Uber’s operation in London. The Private Hire Vehicles (London) Act 1998 gives Uber 21 days to appeal the decision, and they’re still allowed to operate during the appeal. But unsurprisingly, the company is circulating an online petition that creates the impression that Uber is all about the “drivers’ livelihoods.”

An attack that injured an as-yet unknown number of people in London Wednesday has caused San Francisco's airport to increase security, and has San Francisco police monitoring the overseas situation.

As reported by the BBC, the incident occurred at 14:40 GMT, which is 7:40 a.m. in San Francisco. Information on the attack is still being released, but according to the New York Times, police were called to London's Westminster Bridge on reports of “a firearms incident.” The Independent reports that an attacker "mowed down pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, before slamming his car into railings and stabbing a policeman outside Parliament." Gunfire was also reported outside the governmental building, the BBC reports.

"One police officer and at least two others" were killed in the melee, the Independent reports, with "at least" 20 more injured, even as other publications say the number killed and wounded is still unknown. The assailant, described as "middle-aged," was fatally shot by police, the Independent reports.

The San Francisco Police Department is monitoring news from London, spokesperson Officer Giselle Talkoff tells NBC Bay Area, "and will be ready to respond in the event that a local threat presents itself." Meanwhile, BART says that their "Critical Asset Protection team is on patrol as part of its regular schedule," and officials with the Golden Gate Bridge say that the agency is "always on high alert at the bridge to keep it safe from threats."

It's SFO that seems most concerned by the London attack, with "an increased amount of uniformed police officers" patrolling the terminals and tarmac, SFO spokesperson Doug Yakel tells NBC. All in all, Yakel says, "a heightened level of vigilance," is in place at the airport, but for now travelers should not expect protocols at the security check or gates to change.

SF Financial Trader Disappears During Job-Seeking Trip To London

Police are asking for public assistance after a San Francisco-based financial trader disappeared after traveling to England for a job interview.

SF News

england

London

missing person

Eve Batey

Police are asking for public assistance after a San Francisco-based financial trader disappeared during a trip to England for a job interview.

24-year-old Josh Sanchez-Maldonado flew to London from Japan on October 21, according to NBC News, in a trip London's Metropolitan Police are describing as "the first time he had traveled outside the U.S. on his own."

He was spotted leaving the St Giles Hotel in the West London area of Feltham at 12:35 a.m. on October 22, reports the Daily Mail. He never returned, nor did he catch his scheduled flight (Heathrow to Dublin to SF) later that day.

An email sent to the Guardian reporter for clarification was not responded to at publication time.

According to his parents, Sanchez-Maldonado had flown to London for a job interview, though "investigators said they had been unable to uncover the details of the appointment," NBC reports.

The Guardian reports that Sanchez-Maldonado's parents have since arrived in London to meet with police.

According to his father, Jose Sanchez, Sanchez-Maldonado had been in regular communication with his family throughout the trip, and when they spoke on October 21 “He was kind of tired because he had just arrived...He was sad he was away from home, so we were just talking about when he was coming back. He never confirmed the interview, he just told me he had a potential job interview in London.”

In a video statement released earlier today, Sanchez father asks any Londoners who might see Josh to "let him know that we're concerned, that we're looking for him."

(By Daisy Barringer)

Apparently there are NFL fans in the UK and apparently that means that every year, several NFL teams must travel to London to play at Wembley Stadium. This bizarre crossing of the Atlantic has been occurring since 2007, when 82,000 fans filled 90,000 of the seats to see the Miami Dolphins “host” the NY Giants. Until this year, there was only one game per season in London, but when the Jaguars “host” the 49ers this Sunday, it will be the second NFL game this year to be played there. (The Vikings won their only game of the season thus far there against the Steelers.) Apparently, however, that is not enough, because Roger Goodell announced this week that next season, Wembley stadium will be "home" to three NFL teams during the regular season.

Personally, I don’t mind the London game as long as it isn’t a home game for the 49ers like it was in 2010. It isn’t fair for any team to sacrifice a home game, but I’m the kind of girl who only cares when it affects me.

Luckily, Sunday’s game is an away game for the (5-2) 49ers who are heavily favored (+16.5) to beat the winless Jacksonville Jaguars.

One might call this a trick game—will the Niners be too confident and somehow blow it?—but that person would be a moron. Unless the 49ers totally self-destruct—like literally blow up on the field—I can’t see any way we lose this.

The Good

Um, the Jaguars suck? Like really, really, really, really suck. Not only have they
failed to win a single game this season, they’re only averaging 10.9 points a game, which ranks them, oh right: LAST in the league.

They’re also LAST in the league for points allowed during a game (31.7).

And they’re averaging 2.9 yards per run attempt for a total of 1,037 yards allowed thus far in the season. Which is, you guessed it: puts them LAST in the league. (RB Maurice Jones-Drew might have been a Pro Bowl player, but that all seems to be well in the past. The Niners need to stop him. And they will.)

But they’re giving up 4.6 yards per carry to the other team. Like, the Jaguars 100% would need to stop the Niners run game immediately—before kickoff even—and I think we all know that’s not going to happen. Give the ball to Gore. Give the ball to Hunter. Give the ball to Kap. I mean, give the ball to La Michael James for all I care.

The Bad

Hahaahahahahahahahahhahaaha.

I am trying to think of something. I really am.

Um…..

Nope. I’ve got nothing.

The Rest of It

Mario Manningham has been practicing, but don’t look for him to play. Totally not worth it in this situation.

The field the Niners have been practicing on this week was apparently super soggy and slippery. Patrick Willis wasn’t stoked, especially coming off of his groin injury. They moved to artificial turf today.

Sleep deprivation. The players are tired and not everyone is adjusting to the time difference. Adrenaline will handle that.

The 49ers are on a 4-game winning streak. Look for them to easily extend it to five before their bye.

Let’s just keep the ball on the ground as much as possible and get out of London with a win and no injuries. The End.

Today's update from the Keller-verse comes from Inside Scooper Paolo Lucchesi who notes that the chef will be bringing the experience of his Yountville destination all the way to the U.K. for a temporary, 10-day version inside noted high-end London department store Harrods. The scoop:

The temporary restaurant is going to be named “The French Laundry at Harrods” and it will aim to be a replica of the original Yountville destination, right down to the flown-in fixtures, fittings, and dinnerware — and over a dozen French Laundry staffers.

Like the original institution, it won't be easy getting a table at the London version: Keller & Co. will only be serving the nine-course, $450 tasting menu to 70 covers each for lunch and dinner when the pop-up starts on October 1st. Meanwhile, the original French Laundry will remain open stateside, but if you've got reservations up in Yountville for the first week or so in October don't expect Keller to be in the house.

By Daisy Barringer

I’m pretty sure no one even cares about the 49ers right now, but due to the fact that
I spent six straight hours at the Blackthorn Tavern watching football while you were out reveling in the gorgeous Halloween Sunday and getting fired up for the Giants, I’m going to write this post anyway. So there.

That being said, do you know what happens when you start watching football at 10 a.m. and your team actually wins? You keep drinking. And you don’t stop drinking until after the Giants win game 4 of the World Series over ten hours later. And even then, you don’t stop drinking because you have a birthday dinner to attend. Which means that by the end of the day, you’ve consumed somewhere around 14 alcoholic beverages. Which means you’re once again considering <s>rehab, taking a nap, and a side of bacon</s> when and where you’re going to get your next drink.

But enough about you and your drinking problem, let’s get to what really matters: ME. Oh, I mean, the 49ers.

So we won. We beat Denver 24-16 playing “at home” in London. For those of you keeping track, that is our second win this season. As in, two wins and six losses. Which is why when I say what I’m going to say next, you’re going to think I’m cuckoo for Coco Puffs, five cans short of a six pack, four fries short of a Happy Meal, three feet short of a yard, two people short of a threesome… a.k.a.: Completey effing nuts. But I’m going to say it anyway:

Week Around the -ists

href="http://londonist.com/2008/02/air_bound.php"> remove one man from Gatwick.

LAist asked the question, why does everyone hate h...

misc

Austinist

Chicagoist

China

Chinese

Chinese New Year

chinese new year parade

colleges

Democratic Presidential

Gothamist

LAist

London

Massachusetts

new year

Obama

Phillyist

San Francisco

Scientology

Shanghaiist

shepard fairey

this week

Torontoist

Transportation

US

Brock Keeling

While trying to steal them, we noticed a piece of paper wrapping the posies, a poem dedicated to the life and work of cherished writer, rumored plagiarist, and Oakland Square namesake, Jack London. Because today, Jan 12, you see, would have been his 132 birthday.

A bit of background: Born in a house on Third Street and Brannan, which was destroyed in the earthquake of 1906, the building that stands there now has a plaque in his honor, hence the flowers. Although London was born here in the city, he was raised in Oakland primarily by an ex-slave, Virginia Prentiss, after his biological mother was too sick to care for him. Then, London went on to write numerous stores about dogs dying in the wild, tales that would cause children in elementary schools across the world to excuse themselves from reading time in order to weep uncontrollably in the boys bathroom stall. Or so we hear.

Flash forward to today, you might find a poem penned in his honor such as the one we found this morning. While it's no "Ode to Tatiana the Tiger" - because, really, what is? - feel free to judge it yourself after the jump.

Week Around the -Ists
