Woman's Body Found in Lombard Street Hotel Possibly One Half of Missing Riverside Couple

A married couple who disappeared from Riverside County and abandoned their car near Devil's Slide on Route 1 yesterday appear to be connected to a dead body found in a Lombard Street hotel Thursday afternoon. The woman's body, found in a room at the Ramada Inn at 1940 Lombard Street, has not been identified, but signs point to it possibly being that of Colleen Waterman, and her husband Billy Waterman has been identified by police as a person of interest in the case. Billy Waterman remains at large. He is a white 51-year-old man who is 6 feet tall and weighs 160 pounds. more ›

SFist Blotter

SFist Blotter

...And that's not even the curviest part! A car chase that started in Marin County around 3:00 a.m. Monday morning ended abruptly when the driver, speeding at around 75 mph over the Golden Gate Bridge, overshot the turn from Doyle Drive onto Lombard Street and flipped over. A open fifth of Hennessey was found in the car, and the passengers are in SF General with non-fatal injuries. more ›

Big Wheel Keep On Turning

We were really sad we didn't make it to the Bring Your Own Big Wheel event this Saturday as it sounded like a lot of fun. Things like this are one of the reasons why we love this city, the fact that a whole bunch of people would get together to do something completely silly just for the sake of being completely silly. Even better, nobody did it to "reclaim the streets for Big Wheels" or "to symbolize the dehumanizing nature of the corporate world." more ›

Big Wheels, Bill Clinton, And You

Big Wheels, Bill Clinton, And You

Hey, there's lots of stuff going on this weekend! And in exchange for telling you about it, we're going to ask again for a favor in return -- if you go to any of these events, would you mind terribly sending us your pictures of them, and we'll show them off on the site for you? Tag 'em SFist on Flickr, or mail them to editor-at-sfist.com! more ›

Big Wheels Keep On Turnin'

Big Wheels Keep On Turnin'

129822250_66d1da5c20.jpg We did a little Flickr searching and found this excellent picture of the Bring Your Own Big Wheel race down the curvy part of Lombard Street yesterday by kwajkid. There's some more pictures here and here, and we're sure if you keep looking through the tags "Lombard" or "BYOBW," you'll find others too. This is the sixth annual Bring Your Own Big Wheels race down Lombard and seventeen Big Wheels riders made their way down the brick path yesterday. With the street slick from rain, the Chron reported a number of wipeouts, but Steve Aston, resplendant on a purple bike, took the championship. Check out the Chron's pictures too. Your Commute

Your Commute

7291427.jpgA cabbie at Laguna and California on Tuesday at 3:30 a.m. driving someone home was unpleasantly surprised to look up from his driver's seat to see a SUV flying through a red light right at him. The SUV hit the cab, and the cab burst into flame. Amazingly, no one was injured, and even more amazingly, the cops managed to catch the driver of the SUV (who had fled the scene) shortly later. Turns out there were three bullet holes in the roof of the SUV, and the driver admitted he was previously around Lombard Street, where the police had received reports of gunshots being fired. South Bay commuters, better go download some audiobooks for the drive home -- two lanes of 85 N in Sunnyvale, near 280 S, are blocked after an accident and hazmat spill after a van carrying motor parts flipped over and landed on an embankment. The spill appears to involve boxes that were labeled "explosive." That's no good. ...with all this, is it any wonder that BART ridership is soaring? Even with those perennial switching problems, BART's announced that they're going to be extending its cars during rush hour, so you won't be moving to the center of the platform to squeeze onto that Dublin/Pleasanton train. (All Dublin/Pleasanton trains will now be nine cars long. Nine! We'll practically be stretching out in the aisles with that much space!) BART notes that ridership is at 326,500, which is 11,000 more than projected, and 16,500 more than last year. It would take seven fully-loaded 10-car trains to accommodate 11,000 riders. (Dividing that out, a fully-loaded individual car can accomodate 157.142857 repeating people). Picture of cab on fire from KTVU more ›

SFist Rita's 2005

SFist Rita's 2005

09_Hurricane_Rita.gif Rock me like a hurricane! Well, I already told you my favorite news posts of the year -- but what about the other stuff? So here goes: Best movie I saw for free for SFist Reviews: It's so exciting to go up to the box office and be like, "I have press passes!" I really liked the Wellstone! biography, and the Grace Lee Project is out of contention because I actually paid my own money to see that one -- but the one I still think about all the frickin' time is Chinese Restaurants: Three Continents. Why didn't I think of a career path that would oblige me to travel to exotic countries and eat Chinese food all the time? Best show I saw on the 'Fist: Joanna Newsom! Though the Sufjan show with SFist Krissy (and Jason Schwartzman!) is definitely a close second. Best celebrity I met this year: You know, I met a number of interesting folks this year -- but you know, I think I gotta go with Jack Daly. Jack for Mayor! Best Blotter: That ostrich running around on the Golden Gate Bridge, the same day the cops did that exceedingly-thorough search of Centerfolds was a pretty good Tuesday, we gotta say. That girl who sent out an APB about the stuffed mouse she tied to a runaway helium balloon was also hilar. Oh, no, wait -- we just found the entry about the tourist who accidentally rolled backwards down the crooked part of Lombard Street. We have a winner! ....and Coolest person, 2005: My co-editor Eve, of course! Find out my worsts, after the jump! more ›
