New SF Tax For Smokers To Help Clean Up City Streets

This morning, a fresh new ordinance went into effect: cigarette addicts now must pay 20 cents extra per pack "in order cover the costs of cleaning up discarded cigarette butts throughout the city." The very first tax of its kind in the U.S., KTVU says, "The fee will be collected from retailers and will go specifically to city departments that conduct street cleanup of cigarette butts."

Dolores Park Clean-Up on Sunday

In an effort to combat shameless litterbugs, loyal Dolores Park-goers have organized a regular Dolores Park Clean-Up effort. The first one is happening this Sunday at 5 p.m., and volunteers are invited to enjoy drink specials at Amnesia afterwards. With the weather forecast in the 70s this weekend, we're sure there will be plenty of discarded cigarette butts and bottle caps for the volunteers to glean.

Mission Mission posted this appalling photo of the trash left behind at Dolores Park on Easter Sunday, which was taken at 7 a.m. yesterday morning.

As we struggled to survive an interminable meeting this afternoon, we turned in desperation to the pale coffee available in the corner of the room. The "coffee" itself had no effect, but the strange design on the paper cup woke us up.

It's been two weeks since Mayor Gavin Newsom announced that litter in San Francisco had decreased 19% since last year, and about ten days since the last of the newspapers reporting the announcement blew away.
