The main character uses his newfound ability at making books disappear to get rid of books on topics he doesn’t find interesting, and before he knows it, even the books he likes start disappearing.

Per Book Riot, the authors’ presentation consisted of 45 slides that mainly featured pages from the book along with a few informational graphics about books that have been banned nationwide.

When the authors refused to censor their presentation, they were asked to leave. “Our book was literally written because of book banning; we could not leave that out of our presentation,” Ho told KRON4.

The school district released a statement saying the students who were attending the program — ages four to nine — were too young to understand the concept of book-banning. Per KRON4, the district claims that they contacted the authors’ management with the request in advance, which the authors dispute.

“We were not asked to adjust for younger audiences despite what the district statement says. They told us not to talk about book bans or mention queer books.
Sifting through the Mark Twain Papers and Project at UC Berkeley's Bancroft Library, one scholar struck literary gold, or at least enough raw material to turn into something of value: A set of 16 pages of notes detailing a fairy tale that Twain reportedly told as a story to his daughters one night in Paris in 1879. Twain, the titan of American letters whose picaresque novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn remains his best-known work, was apparently a prolific bedtime storyteller, though this is the only tale he seems to have recorded.

On Friday, publisher Doubleday Books for Young Readers announced it had acquired the story, discovered in 2011, which the AP reports has been adapted into an 11-chapter, 152-page illustrated book by Philip and Erin Stead, the prize-wining children's writer/illustrator duo known for their work A Sick Day for Amos McGee. The Steads will reportedly frame their expansion of the original story as "Told to me by my friend, Mark Twain."

The Purloining of Prince Oleomargarine, Twain's tale of a boy who speaks to animals to save a prince, is scheduled for a September 26 release. That date, the Guardian observes, is significant as it marks the 150th anniversary of the first volume Twain published, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County and Other Sketches (1867).

“To publish a new Twain story is an incredible literary event," Frances Gilbert, who edited the new book, tells the Guardian. "When I first got the chance to read this unpublished story, I couldn’t believe what I was holding.”

Setting aside the book's merit, I think it's fair to wager that the publisher will make quite the event of its release. Dr. Seuss’s What Pet Should I Get, a slim book posthumously discovered and then published last year, might serve as one example of what to expect: It sold 200,000 copies in just a week in the US, and though it wasn't received as Seuss's best, it was still gobbled up by fans.

But there's nary a neighborhood without notable literary significance in San Francisco, as illustrated by this informative interactive literary map assembled by The Chronicle.

The maps spans the Bay Area and details such literary factoids like Jack London's birth (in a house that was located at 615 Third Street in San Francisco) and grisly deaths (science fiction writer Robert Duncan Milne was run over by a cable car while drunkenly crossing the street at Market and Montgomery). Toggle over to the "Passages" section of the map for a lovely collection of Bay Area literary mentions, from The Joy Luck Club to The Kite Runner to (ahem, Fremont) to Divisadero:

"I come from Divisadero Street. Divisadero, from the Spanish word for 'division,' the street that at one time was the dividing line between San Francisco and the fields of the Presidio. Or it might derive from the word 'divisar', meaning 'to gaze at something from a distance.' "

Absent is the memorable first paragraph of Hunter S. Thomson's Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72, which we'll include here, just for kicks:

January '73

Dawn is coming up in San Francisco now: 6:09 AM. I can hear the rumble of early morning buses under my window at the Seal Rock Inn ... out here at the far end of Geary Street: This is the end of the line, for buses and everything else, the western edge of America. From my desk I can see the dark jagged hump of "Seal Rock" looming out of the ocean in the grey morning light. About 200 seals have been barking out there most of the night. Staying in this place with the windows open is like living next to a dog pound.

Get your literary fix for the day over at The Chronicle's map, which also includes a list of independent bookstores, local authors working today, and upcoming Litquake events.

In what's being called a "cross-country battle of the libraries," the fine folks at San Francisco Public Library have placed a bet with the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore. Both of them involving reciting poems dedicated to the other city. Both of them involve library types wearing jerseys. We love it. So will you. Here are the details:

If the 49ers win on Sunday (which, let's face it, they will), Pratt Library CEO Carla Hayden must recite George Sterling's iconic San Francisco poem, “The Cool, Grey City of Love” in Baltimore’s Central Library Main Hall while wearing a 49ers jersey.

If the Ravens win (which, how adorable), the San Francisco city librarian Luis Herrera will have to recite Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven" in the atrium of the San Francisco Main Library wearing a Ravens jersey.

"We are confident about the Niners victory on Sunday and we sure hope Dr. Hayden looks good in red and gold," chirped Herrera. "As a huge sports fan, I am thrilled to support our football team while spotlighting two great library systems and two great literary cities."

To give Hayden a jumpstart, here's the poem she needs to learn by Monday:

"The Cool, Grey City of Love"
By GEORGE STERLING

Tho I die on a distant strand,
And they give me a grave in that land,
Yet carry me back to my own city!
Carry me back to her grace and pity!
For I think I could not rest
Afar from her mighty breast.
She is fairer than others are
Whom they sing the beauty of.
Her heart is a song and a star--
My cool, grey city of love.

Tho they tear the rose from her brow,
To her is ever my vow;
Ever to her I give my duty--
First in rapture and first in beauty,
Wayward, passionate, brave,
Glad of the life God gave.
The sea-winds are her kiss,
And the sea-gull is her dove.
Cleanly and strong she is--
My cool, grey city of love.

The winds of the Future wait
At the iron walls of her Gate,
And the western ocean breaks in thunder,
And the western stars go slowly under,
And her gaze is ever West
In the dream of her young unrest.
Her sea is a voice that calls,
And her star a voice above,
And her wind a voice on her walls--
My cool, grey city of love.

Tho they stay her feet at the dance,
In her is the far romance.
Under the rain of winter falling,
Vine and rose will await recalling.
Tho the dark be cold and blind,
Yet her sea-fog's touch is kind,
And her mightier caress
Is joy and the pain thereof;
And great is thy tenderness,
O cool, grey city of love!

Go Do This Thing Tonight: Hear A Literary Mixtape

We were jazzed about Quiet Lightning's submission-based lit reading series when it debuted in the Conservatory of Flow...

Arts & Entertainment

conservatory of flowers

go do this thing

lit readings

literature

quiet lightning

sfist tonight

Andrew Dalton

We were jazzed about Quiet Lightning's submission-based lit reading series when it debuted in the Conservatory of Flowers a few months back. Tonight, the local literary concern collides with LitQuake for the final installment of their reading series in the Conservatory, and promises writing of all forms, read in a unique setting without unnecessary author banter.

After tonight's show, the materials will be presented as a book with artwork by Mary Behm-Steinberg. Behm-Steinberg's work will be on display in the conservatory tonight along with visual art from de Young Artist Fellow Todd T. Brown.

As for libations, Lagunitas will be sponsoring the beers at $3 a pop.

Yes, that Beck. You should help Francis Ford Coppola celebrate the release of one of the city's best (and most underrated!) literary magazines at Cafe Zoetrope in North Beach on Tuesday, July 19 from 6 to 8 pm. There’ll be cocktails flowing, passed plates of light bites, and presumably groovy music.

The event is free and open to all. So, you know, come. After all, North Beach is the new Mission. Or something like that.

RayKo Photo Center celebrates the glorious and richly colorful life of Kodachrome with a juried exhibition featuring images by 23 different artists from across the country. It truly is the end of an era. (Sigh.) If you have any undeveloped Kodachrome film sitting around, get it processed at Dwayne's Photo by 12/30/2010.

It's tough times for local booksellers. With Abandoned Planet cleaned out, McDonald's given the heave-ho, and the name of the frightening Forever After Books in the Haight thankfully shown to be an empty threat, it's starting to look like there's no hope for reading in this town.

But times things seem positively frantic over at Modern Times Bookstore, where the events calendar's filled to bursting with fun hands-on events, readings, and workshops. We recently popped in to photograph a delightful hands-on mini-comic workshop led by friend-of-SFist Justin Hall; and this past weekend the store thoughtfully hosted a Free Kidz Table at the Anarchist Book Fair. (Is there anything more anarchic than spelling kids with a Z?)
