And sometimes it feels overwhelming!

Look, don't get me wrong. People who sneer that they don't pay attention to the news because it's "too depressing" bore the shit out of me, because I think willful ignorance is a grossly unappealing trait. But sometimes, it feels like a lot, doesn't it? Sometimes, we all need a break.

And that's what I'm taking right now, with this lovely video of a live sand dollar Richmond SF blog reader Erika O. found on Ocean Beach this week. It's a good reminder for all of us that there's life happening beyond this screen we're both looking at right now. All we have to do is look up, push our seats back, and go get it.

Afternoon Palate Cleanser: Life in a Day, Documenting a Single Day On Earth

Do you remember the Day In the Life coffee table books your parents had in their library?

Do you remember the Day In the Life coffee table books your parents had in their library? So satisfying. We loved those books and would pore over them each day after school in between overzealous bites of our carrot coins and peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

With that in mind, we were delighted to hear that Google and director Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland, Touching the Void, One Day in September) teamed up to produce a Life in a Day, Documenting a Single Day On Earth. Which is just that: one day documented by anyone with a video camera. That footage will then by edited into a single movie. Neat-o.

And that day? Is this week on Saturday, July 24. You will have 24 hours to capture a glimpse of your life (or a life) on camera, any camera. You will need to upload your footage before July 31.

Nancy Pelosi Dead Wrong on Abortion, says SF Archbishop

Sorcerer Archbishop George Niederauer is hopping mad at Nancy Pelosi. Why? Because of what she said about the church's teaching on abortion. It seems on NBC's Meet the Press last week, the congresswoman from Baghdad by the Bay, while defending her stance on abortion, claimed that "church leaders throughout history haven't been able to define when life begins." Not so, says Archbishop Niederauer. The Catholic church has considered abortion evil ever since religion was concocted in the creative minds of ancient ad execs, he declares. The SF Archbishop goes on to say that he wants to have a "private talk" with Pelosi. Gulp.
