Afternoon Palate Cleanser: Foxes in the Snow (in London)

For your afternoon relaxation, all ye who are stuck in the office (probably hungover) during this dreadful slow week: A video of some foxes outside in the snow, shot by a guy in south London who clearly has a lovely piece of property in back of his house. They kind of remind us of Maru, the hoppity cat who loves boxes. [via Laughing Squid - music by Airport 85] more ›

Gary Gygax, Co-Creator of Dungeons & Dragons, Dies

Laughing Squid broke the news that game designer Gary Gygax, co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons (1974)/co-founder of Tactical Studies Rules, died today at the ripe age of 69. According to LS, his death was announced on the Troll Lord Games forum. Steve (AKA the High Lord, Coburg the Undying, he who sits on the elephants back of the Castle and Crusade Society) had this to say on the forums: more ›

Is Your Little Blessing a Tagger?

Is Your Little Blessing a Tagger?

God, sometimes we love Orange County. It's such a parody of itself at times, which we admire. Especially when it comes to brilliance like the following found over at Laughing Squid. You see, the city of Santa Ana (oy) wants to help parents determine, via the graphic above, whether or not their child is a rat bastard tagger. The city of Santa Ana's site explains their accusatory and unfair image, along with the final word as to what is and is not art, thusly: more ›

SFist Tonight

  • Laughing Squid’s Last Minute Unholiday Party: Scott Beale and the gang will be having a most splendid post- and un-holiday party/experiment with social media. Although LS will be "providing some beer and buying pizza, but please feel free to bring some more beer, wine, leftover holiday food, etc." The mood is low-key and geek-filled, and we mean that in the best possible way. Starts at 7 p.m. at Citizen Space.
  • Ben-Hur (1959): Not only did this William Wyler-directed epic saga about a Jewish prince sold into slavery (and something or other about bare chests and chariot racing) win a record-breaking 11 Oscars, but finely-aged ham Charlton Heston also picked up the best actor award for it, too. See, miracles really do happen. Screens tonight at 7 p.m. at The Castro Theatre; $6-9
  • Barracuda: (Now, wouldntcha?) DJs Damon, Heiko, and Phillie Ocean turn what could be an ordinary '80s night into something extraordinary. Chic, rather than humorous or ironic, '80s attire is highly encouraged. The beats go from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. at 111 Minna Gallery; $5-10.

Cream Pie Cuteness Makes Pie Fight a Success

Cream Pie Cuteness Makes Pie Fight a Success

Last Friday's public pie fight was a phenomenal, messy success. This reporter (above) got hit hard, it seems, or added more cream to her camera-ready face for the cameras. We're sorry we missed this, but again, as we used to whine in elementary school to avoid any water-balloon mayhem or recreational sporting activity, "Don't! Dude, our mom's going to kill us if we get our clothes dirty." Laughing Squid has an brilliant comment commencing... more ›

Splat: Pie Fight Tonight

Screw the cardboard tube battle, this sounds like something that needs to happen every night. This evening at 5 p.m. sharp, head on down to the tourist epicenter of San Francisco, the Powell Cable Car turnaround, for what will be a massive pie fight. According to Mr. Scott Beale over at Laughing Squid, SF0 player Herbie Hatman is organizing a formal-attire pie fight (think Mabel Normand, Keystone Cops) which will get all up in... more ›

Behold: Life-Size Mouse Trap

Behold: Life-Size Mouse Trap

Remember this game? Well, we don't remember the game's competitive aspects -- does anyone? -- but we remember setting up its trap over and over and over until it finally broke. And over at Laughing Squid, Scott Beale caught a life-sized version of the game at the Maker Faire 2007. (Yes, any fair ending with an "e" is cause for great alarm, but this Mouse Trap overrides that fear.) more ›
