San Rafael nonprofit WildCare put the call out in April for knitters to craft nests that mimic baby birds’ naturally warm habitats. So far, the Chronicle reports, 529 nests have been donated, half of which have gone to California wildlife hospitals and bird rescue centers. Below, check out a video by WildCare that shows these adorable chicks hanging out in their knitted homes.

The nests are primarily being used for songbirds that have fallen out of their nests during the spring season. Once they fall, the baby birds' mothers are often unable to pick up the chicks and fly them back to the nest.

WildCare keeps the baby birds in knitted nests for two weeks, feeding them 15 times a day until they’re strong enough to be moved to a larger cage. The birds are usually released to where they were found within two months.

The Baby Bird Nest campaign started two years ago, following in the footsteps of Sebastopol's Native Songbird Care & Conservation, which first designed the pattern for the knitted bowls that’s still being used today. Previously, WildCare used hard-surfaced bowls that caused the fragile birds to bruise or develop other problems.

Craft blogs are full of inspiring handmade gift ideas this month, here's a round-up of some of our favorites.

Ornaments are quick and easy gifts to make, plus they can be used year after year, and if they're sweet enough they may even stay out long after the tree's down. We love these yarn ornaments on Craftster which we first saw on Craft. Three simple supplies are all you need, yarn, an old ornament and party drink umbrellas that will turn into knitting needles! Diane of Crafty Pod has a great tutorial up on how to make an adorable ric rac ornament. Homey not your bag? How About Orange has a simple tutorial for retro ornaments made out of foam. Another fun suggestion is buying some hollow glass ornaments and filling them with anything you think would look good-- beads, buttons, old photos-- the possibilities are endless.

If you have some basic sewing skills pillows are an easy project that can be made in a day. Sewing machines speed things along, but all you really need are thread, needle and fabric. Eye pillows also make a great gift, fill them with rice and lavender and you have a therapeutic present for the stress case in your life. Sew, Mama, Sew! is loaded with instructions for the beginner to more experienced sewer. Of course if you don't feel like sewing you can buy one of love forever's eye pillows from her Etsy shop.

Sure, on the surface it seems like a viral, isn't-that-darling clip of a Chinese man executing a well-choreographed tribute to "U Can't Touch This" by Oakland native MC Hammer. But the underlying theme here is a heartbreaking one of a young man craving a scrap of affection from a frosty and heartless mother whose only concern is that of her gauge. Watch it and just try holding back the tears.

Craftwork Gets Soft

Image from My Paper CraneIt's been a productive yea...

Arts & Entertainment

art

Christina Loff

Crafts

Flickr

fun

knitting

photos

pictures

Christina Loff

It's been a productive year for us. Between knitting and cupcakes, we've been crafting up a storm. Our favorite new craft has absolutely no function other than looking cute. We're talking about softies, soft homemade toys that may not be all that functional but are certainly fun to make and coo at. For inspiration head on over to My Paper Crane, where master softie maker Heidi Kenney has an incredible gallery of softies for sale. Flickr of course has a great gallery of softies as well as some fabulous pictures of amigurumi. Amigurumi is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small stuffed toys. These beauties take a little more skill and time, but they're certainly fun to look at.

We made our first softie this weekend and although it took most of the afternoon, we're going to blame that on our hangover and not the skill level required to make a softie. A cupcake may have been a bit ambitious for our first hand sewn toy, but it made a cute birthday present and Richard seemed to appreciate its homemade appeal.

Craftwork Plays in the Kitchen

In case you don't think there's anything crafty about baking a batch of cupcakes, ...

Arts & Entertainment

Amy Sedaris

art

blogs

books

Christina Loff

Crafts

in the kitchen

knitting

Marie Antoinette

pictures

Christina Loff

In case you don't think there's anything crafty about baking a batch of cupcakes, we've got the pictures to prove you wrong. And we've had so much sugar today, we doubt you would really want to argue with us.

Maybe it was the decadent cakes and sweets we saw in Marie Antoinette, our hero Amy Sedaris's cupcake obsession, the new book Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World, cupcake blogs, or our own local cupcakeries, but we've been itching to make cupcakes for months now. Lucky for us we have a good friend who happens to be a pastry chef (not that you need a pastry chef in your life to make cupcakes, we're just less baking savvy then most) who offered to play in the kitchen with us.

Sure, part of crafting is the satisfaction of planning, playing, and making something permanent with your hands. But baking is as much an art as any craft out there. And there's something just as satisfying in mixing, measuring, baking and then eating your creation. Cupcakes are the perfect palate for some edible artistry.

Craftwork: Happy Kitschy Crafting.

There was no shortage of craft books on the market this year. Kramer, a craft maven by every definition of the word, is responsible for starting the fabulous craftster.org, an online community for crafters of all stripes. Kramer is also one of the organizers behind Bazaar Bizarre, and if that weren't enough she is also part owner of Magpie, a crafty boutique in Sommerville, Massachusetts. A self proclaimed craft junkie, this book was inspired by Kramer's collection of craft books from the 1950's and 60's. In fact, about seventy percent of the projects that appear in the book are taken from those retro publications.

We'll admit at first we thought some of the projects seemed a little silly, Terry Loincloths anyone? But part of what makes this book so great is that these outlandish projects are the ones from the 50's & 60's. And there's something sort of charming about the crocheted doll face fridge magnets and beaded fruit. The actual images and text are reproduced so you can read pack-o-fun's (a manufacturer of many of these vintage craft booklets) original directions and delight in the drawings that accompany them. As Kramer states in the introduction, there's something sweetly nostalgic about craft projects from this era, not that we would have wanted to live in the 50's either, but it would have been fun to make a gold macaroni frame with your grandma back then.

As you may recall, we're giving out "The Heart Is Deceitful" movie swag to the person who came up with the best, most fakest San Francisco story.
"Speak up Patrick", I said breathlessly as I dashed out the door and across the spotless sidewalk, "I can never hear you, and my bus will be here in 60 seconds." He pointed up the street, where I noticed a police car. "Big graffitti bust" he said softly, "biggest thing since the drug bust back in '97!". "Drugs?" I said, flabbergasted, "on Lower Haight?" He nodded soberly. "Yes, who would believe it, now that we have the HOPE VI program. Hey, watch out for those dirty needles." Looking down, I noticed a pair of beat up knitting needles on the sidewalk, and stepped over them carefully. "Used rubbers too" I remarked, gesturing at some worn galoshes. "Yeah, they're left over from that shooting we had last night", he added, "looks like another Robin Williams blockbuster."

A man in chef's garb passed by, carrying a broken saucepan. "Which way is the pot club?" he asked. As I pointed him up towards the 400 block, I saw the 71 making its way around one of the hourly meter patrols. "Darn, my watch must be slow!" I muttered.

Suddenly a man dashed into the crosswalk, pursued by a group of what appeared to be reporters. "No interviews! No photographs! Not until this crack problem is cleaned up" he cried. "But Mayor Newsom! What possibly do you mean" shouted one pursuer. "I'm talking about this!" he cried, pointing at the roadway, where a tiny hairline fracture had developed in the year-old pavement.

Yes, ladies knitting, although they were part of the audience, not performing. In other words, it was a veritable calvacade of comedy, one that lasted over three and a half-hours and kept SFist up way past our bedtime.

As for the comedy itself, things got off to a bang with jokes about anal sex. That pretty much set the tone. From there on in, we heard jokes about religion, drugs, race, shooting the President (any President), and sex. In other words, it was about as blue as it comes and we mean state as much as style. And in a time when an ex-heart surgeon declares on C-Span that after watching a thirty-second video, he can determine that a vegetable is not a vegetable, it’s good to hear offensively funny things that are meant to be offensively funny.

Get Your Knit On

Hark...

Arts & Entertainment

angels

art

Arts+Events

SF Events

Fashion

Henry Rollins

hipster

Hobbies

Jim Morrison

knitting

literature

Oakland

pictures

Rollins

San Rafael

sf

Stitch

The Knitters

train

Transportation

Wednesday

rita

Hark! Do you hear the hosannas of angels wearing roomy striped ponchos and the clicking of bamboo sticks? That's right -- the hipster goddess of knitting, Debbie Stoller, is in town promoting her new book, , a sequel to her massive hit, the original Stitch and Bitch: The Knitters' Handbook. Stoller, who also edits the zine Bust, is all about bringing knitting to the new millennium: reclaiming knitting as a feminist art, organizing knitting circles (or Stitch 'n Bitches), encouraging a community of online knitters and crafters, and now, writing a new book that features even more contemporary knitting patterns from contributors across the nation, such as snazzy rasta caps, yoga mats, bags with pictures of Jim Morrison on them, and Henry Rollins dolls, among others.

Stoller will be bringing her intarsia mojo to San Rafael's Dharma Trading Company tonight. Tomorrow, she'll be launching a new program with Amtrak, Stitch-n-Ride, where knitting circles can take Amtrak from Oakland to Sacto every Tuesday (and free patterns from Stoller's book will be distributed -- you can find them online too). If you're a knitting commuter, meet at 5:30 in Oakland, take the train to Sacto with Debbie, and then triumphantly carry her aloft a carriage made of knitting needles to Rumplestilskin's for another reading.

Those of you who don't commute by train, Stoller will be back in SF on Wednesday, for an appearance at Urban Knitting. And hey, can someone teach us how to knit with double-pointed needles?

Six students and a knitting instructor at the Knitting Basket in the Montclair Village in Oakland were held up at gunpoint Monday night by a suspect described as a white 60 year old homeless man missing two front teeth and carrying a camouflage-colored rifle. A witness said, "He looked very out of place at a knitting store." The suspect was also wearing (yup) a knit black hat.

The police are on the lookout, and the Montclair Village security staff will escort nervous shoppers to their cars if asked. This is why we're sticking with cross-stitch.

You provide the yarn and labor and they'll get your creation into the hands of some adorable small, previously cold, child or equally needy adult who could really use it. Their website has links to patterns and provides some guidelines. Yeah, putting a big picture of Jesus on the sweather might be a bad idea. But colorful yarns, stripes, funky patterns are all a go!

It's so very simple we don't even have that much to say about it. They note that their effort was inspired by the Red Cross which, during the two world wars, had formal programs for Americans to knit for the military.

If you don't know how to knit or crochet, you can also support them by buying some cool postcards. Or buy a pattern to give to someone you do know who knits.

The deadline to get your blanket into their next shipment to Afghanistan is January 14th - so get going!

Grrrl Riot

Calling all feminist hipsters (and those looking to pick up the same) – the second Ladyfest Bay Area will be hitting the Mission this weekend (July 29-Aug...

Arts & Entertainment

art

Band

Bay Area

Bitch Magazine

City

diy

Dolores Park

east bay

SF Events

feminism

fun

hip-hop

hipsters

knitting

maps

Modern Times

porn

punk rock

spoken word

Summer

take out

valencia street

jackson

Calling all feminist hipsters (and those looking to pick up the same) – the second Ladyfest Bay Area will be hitting the Mission this weekend (July 29-August 1). Ladyfest is the feminist DIY post-riotgrrl community art, activism, and punk rock festival, which started in 2000 in (where else?) Olympia, WA, and has since spread throughout the land and throughout the world. So naturally, girl bands play, spoken word poets rant, knitting circles purl, self-defense classes take out the eyes and kneecaps of the oppressor, and positive female energy rules the day. It’s volunteer-organized, non-corporate sponsored, and appears mainly to have been advertised by spray-paint stencils on Valencia Street.

This year’s line up includes: bands like the All-Girl Summer Fun Band and the Butchies; feminist short films, documentaries, and a DIY porn; a photography show by Tammie Rae Carland of Mr. Lady Records; a queer hip-hop show featuring Katastrophe, the transgender rapper; readings by the luminaries of the lesbian lit and slut scene; and panels on topics such as political activism, indie record producing, auto repair, and feminist legal issues, among many, many others. There’s also a merch table to support feminist businesses (what better time than now to pick up a silk-screened “This is what feminism looks like” t-shirt, or the latest issue of Bitch Magazine?)

Passes and individual tickets can be purchased at Modern Times or Needles and Pins in the City, the Long Haul or Mod Lang in the East Bay, or online at the website. Schedules and maps are available online – or just look for the young women with the black tank tops and tattoos around Dolores Park this weekend.
