Apparently, Al is a little upset that the Raiders once again didn't have a winning season and blames <strike>himself</strike> Lane. He is also pretty miffed that Lane talked him into trading Randy Moss. It's a little unclear as to what is going on as ESPN and the Chron have differing accounts but it appears that Al is trying to get Lane to quit so he doesn't have to fire him.

Apparently, Al wrote some sort of "Dear Lane" letter telling Lane that he will no longer have any control over coaching and personnel decisions. He also took away Lane's key to the executive bathroom. Lane didn't budge. ESPN then says that Lane's response to all this put Al in such a tizzy that he wrote a resignation letter to Lane and asked him to sign. Lane ain't. Or at least we think that's what is going on-- again, it's a little unclear as to what exactly is happening. The key thing in all of this is that if Lane were to be fired, Al would owe him $4 million for the remaining part of Lane's contract and since Al’s a cheap-ass bastard, he's trying to get Lane to quit so he doesn't have to pay him the money. Lane obviously wants to be fired so he can collect the $4 million without passing Go.

Supposedly, Dennis Green, of "they are who we thought they are" fame is rumored to be the Raiders new boss. That quote, come to think of it, should be a warning to Dennis if ever there was.

Regardless, this is one more point in the Raider's column in the heated contest for "Most Hilariously Dysfunctional Franchise" in sports, something for which the Knicks had pulled way ahead in. Hey, the Raiders might as well excel in something.

It's Got to be the Morning After

Here's todays sports news

SF News

blogs

games

Giants

Golden State

goldenstate

Gossip

Kerry Wood

Knicks

Lane Kiffin

lanekiffin

Marcio Jose Sanchez

mattcain

McCovey Chronicles

Raiders

Rockets

rumors

running

Bay Area Sports

starbucks

the game

timlincecum

Warriors

Jon

Warriors 113 Rockets 94- On the pregame show before the game, the announcers were saying that whomever controlled the pace of the game would win. If it was fast paced, it's all Golden State. If it was slowed down a bit, then the Rockets would take it. Guess which kind of pace the game was played at? Despite the presence of Yao, the Warriors outrebounded the Rockets and held him in check. So much for that size disadvantage the Warriors are supposed to have. For those keeping score at home, that's eight out of nine games the Warriors have won.

-So you've probably heard the Lane Kiffin to Arkansas rumors. We have no idea what the what is but the thing makes kind of sense in a weird sort of way. Kiffin was totally unprepared for the job and kind of looks it. He has the same look on his face that you'd see in Starbucks when a barista who's been on the job for only a week suddenly finds himself running the place because the manager was sick. Throw in all the Al craziness and the fact that the Raiders are the second most dysfunctional franchise in sports (the Knicks are, of course, #1 by a wide margin) and Arkansas sounds kind of inviting. Just think about that for a minute.

-McCovey Chronicles has a really good discussion about the Giants' "Sophie's Choice" dilemna this offseason, mainly in that in order to get some good players in a trade, they'd probably have to trade either Cain or Lincecum. So which one should they trade? Right now, it doesn't look like it's gonna happen, but somebody on the team has to be able to hit the ball. And if you ask us we'd get rid of the Enchanter as something about him just screams "Kerry Wood."

The Beard led the way with 31 points, seven assists and six rebounds and Stephen Jackson got 23 points. For the Knicks, Starbury played his first game of the season showing that blackmail does work

-According to reports, Al Davis stepped out of his cryogenic chamber once again to announce that he won't retire until the Raiders win two more Superbowls, which at this rate will be, what, in the year 2525? He'll probably still be alive then anyways. Davis also said it wasn't his idea to trade Randy Moss but his coaches. We bet the rest of the NFL is wishing Al didn’t listen to his coaches.

-Anne Killion of the Merc has been throwing darts at Mike Nolan ever since Sunday and is saying that the best thing the Niners could do is to say buh-bye to their coach. She think's that it's not that he has too much responsibility, as others think, and that's what is making him a lousy coach-- he's just a lousy coach. And it's not just he's a lousy game-day coach (see last Sunday and the infamous field goal) but that the whole thing with Alex Smith (was he healthy? Was he fine? Is Zeppelin really touring next year?) shows that he's just not good at the whole communicating thing either. There's more to it but after reading both columns, all we can say is ouch. The Niners, btw, hired Ted Tollner as an offensive assistant. We don't know what means either.

-And finally, is the Enchanter trade bait? Nooooooooo!
NBA fans, lehhhhhhhhht's get ready to ruuuuuummmmm-bbbbllllllllllllle -- again.

Saturday night in Madison Square Garden, the most famous boxing arena in the world, the NY Knicks and Denver Nuggets set upon each other in the squared rectangle for what snarky bloggers and snide sportswriters have billed as the Throwdown in Showtown.

Down 19 points with less than two minutes to play, a familiar position for Knicks teams the last few years, Knickerbocker Mardy Collins took it upon himself to exact some frontier justice on Nugget J.R. Smith as Smith drove the lane en route to increasing the Nuggets' already insurmountable lead. Predictably incensed, the Nugs retaliated in kind with the requisite pushing and arm flailing. It was shaping up as just another NBA slap-and-tickle fight until Knick fireplug Nate Robinson and foulee Smith went flying into pricey floor seats along the baseline behind the Nuggets basket.Oh it was on then.

Bodies rushed together on the court in a frenzy of expletives and "your mother!"s, and then league scoring leader Carmelo Anthony lost his mind and sucker-punched fouler Collins in the face.

Adding an extra level of intrigue to this story is word that just before the hard foul on Carmelo, Knicks coach Isiah Thomas "warned" Anthony not to venture into the lane. Sounds about right. It seems that Thomas and Nuggets coach George Karl have bad blood between them, Karl being a Larry Brown guy and Isaiah being decidedly not. Nicknamed "the baby-faced assassin", Thomas was always a sneaky dirty player back in his days with the intimidation-minded Detroit Pistons "Bad Boys" teams of the late 1980s and early 1990s. He'd smile, hug, and kiss-kiss you before the game, then cheap shot you with an elbow or a hard foul during the game -- ain't that right Magic, Michael, and Larry?

Oh you bet your sweet ass there's some finage resulting from this fracas. If there is one thing NBA commish David Stern will not tolerate, it's somebody soiling the image of his beloved cash cow, er moneymaker, er basketball product.

The benefit of having Mr. Brown is that he is well acknowledged as some sort of basketball genius, well praised as having invented the game, the first person to ever do a slam dunk, and helped personally ease tensions between Kobe and Shaq. He is also justifiably famous for taking crap teams and turning them into playoff-bound teams. That would pretty much describe the Warriors. Finally, it also goes without saying that his hiring would immediately put the Warriors on the NBA map, something they haven't been in years. Hell, you can't watch one episode of PTI without at least one segment detailing the latest in whatever soap opera Larry is involved in.

And that brings us to his downside, the reason why he's not such a hot pick. Usually, the first thing Larry does when he gets hired as a coach is call his agent and see if there's another job out there. The second thing he does is call every member of the press and complain about the team he just agreed to coach and bash all the players (the forum on WarriorsWorld already has a thread going on which Warrior would Larry complain about first with Baron Davis getting most of the votes). Yes, Larry wins, but he brings with him the Larry Brown Circus, complete with constant rumors of his leaving, speculation about if he's going to leave, and "unknown sources" whispering about Brown's unhappiness. Brown, in a way, is the Terrell Owens of coaches, undeniably great, yes, but not really worth the headache.

Considering Brown is about to get a $40 million dollar check to the Knicks (on top of a huge check he got from the Pistons) if he is fired, we really have to wonder why he'd even coach again. Do you know how many lines of coke you can do off stripper's chests with $40 million dollars?
Since Baron Davis was acquired, they have:

- Beaten Minnesota, Sacramento, Phoenix, the Knicks, and 76ers
- Have the best record of any California basketball team since the All-Star break (and yep, that includes the LA Kobe's)
- Won at Sacramento for the first time since 1994, and have won five straight on the road for the first time since 1978.
- Snapped four major losing streak on the road, having ended streaks to Dallas (12 games), Sacramento (11) and Orlando (also 11).
- Had a winning record in March (10-6) for the first time in a decade.
- Became the fifth team with a sub-.500 record to win at least four of eight games on a road trip since 1976-77.

Over the next couple of weeks, the Warriors will host Houston, Phoenix and San Antonio, all NBA powerhouses and all teams expected to go far in the playoffs. Tickets, of course, are available, but this time tickets mean something more than getting a good chance to see an actual good team play. It means seeing two good teams play. Imagine that.

Now, if they can only do something about those hideous orange jerseys.
