At Make-Out Room see a trio of local "The" bands: The Passionistas, The Happy Hollows and The Dont's. We're pretty big fans of As Tall As Lions' self-titled debut record, but we haven't had a chance to see them live yet, unless that performance we watched on Jimmy Kimmel counts. Lucky for all of us, they're playing on Friday night at Bottom of the Hill with Mae and Dear And The Headlights.
Even though there's no film fests in town, we stopped by the movie theater and checked out American Fusion, which opened this past weekend at the Sundance Kabuki. This film totally reminded us of a <strike>Jimmy Kimmel</strike> Patton Oswald joke we heard a few years ago that references the breaks one gets upon growing older.

Well, the wickedly funny Taiwanese grandmother, played by Lan Yeung, was not 100 (which according to Oswald, entitles one to kill anyone with their bare hands if possible), but close enough. She had us doubled over many many times throughout this film with her irreverent (and very unabashed) cultural stereotyping. If you’ve ever had a grandparent or elderly relative who resorts to blackmailing you into compliance with their not-so-subtle threats that they’re gonna kick the bucket any day now - or if you’ve ever had to witness their inappropriate ethnic comments (to put it nicely) in public -- then you know exactly what we’re talking about.

It’s not just about Grandma, though. American Fusion is an in your face portrait of intergenerational family conflict that almost anyone can relate to in part (and some probably all too well). It features former NYPD Blue hottie Esai Morales (what’s the latest on his legal woes?!), aka Dr. Martinez, the Mexican dentist who steps directly into granny’s path when he makes a move on her middle-age daughter, Yvonne (Sylvia Chang). There are plenty of cameos in the film, including one by Pat Morita (R.I.P.), the beloved Mr. Miyagi from The Karate Kid.

American Fusion continues at the Sundance Kabuki, and opens this Friday at the Oaks Theatre in Berkeley.

p.s. Any word on when the new Sundance café (that replaced Pasta Pomodoro) next to the theater is gonna get its liquor license? It’s about time!

1) went 0-for, not hitting anything pitched to him;
2) was on the losing side of the 13-8 score for the National League
3) hit a pop-up, which was promptly palmed by Dancing with the Stars second-placer Jerry Rice,
4) was booed; and
5) threw out his back.

Gavin's been observed wincing and walking at a 45-degree angle in City Hall today, and the emcee at the opening of the Federal Building this afternoon expressed sympathy as Gavin gripped the sides of the podium tightly so he could give his speech.

Others playing at the Celebrity All-Star game included Jimmy Kimmel, chef Bobby Flay, and Kevin Dillon from Entourage. James Denton from Desperate Housewives hit an impressive home run and another Dancing with the Stars alum, ESPN's Kenny Mayne, deftly caught what would have otherwise been a homer from Kimmel.

No word if Gavin tried to ply his pitcher ways with the ubiquitous Alyssa Milano, who emceed.

The group ("Gentlemen's Fight Club") is by invite only, involves at least a dozen people, and the only protective gear they can wear are either a fencing mask or hockey mask. Weapons include pillowcases stuffed with soda cans, frying pans, and tennis rackets. It's so Dwight Schrute!

There are some choice quotes in this article: a 34-year-old computer engineer with "fantasies" about inflicting pain on people, the 37-year-old organizer who says "you get to be a superhero for a night," and another engineer who says he skipped his first wedding anniversary for a fight. But the best quote? From Stony Brook psych professor Michael Kimmel, who says, "Real-life fight clubs are the male version of the girls who cut themselves."
