SF Zoo's Official Statement Released

SF Zoo just released an official statement about yesterday's attack, expressing their "deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the victim killed in the December 25, 2007." They also mention that it "is anticipated that the Zoo will reopen tomorrow from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. For information please visit www.sfzoo.org."

While this fatal and accidental meeting of man and beast is devastating, we can only hope -- guiltily, of course -- that yesterday's tiger attack results in an appearance by four-on-the-floor Neda Ruiz on behalf of Tatiana. Really, no fatal mauling story would be complete without her.

Escaped Tiger Kills SF Zoo Visitor

A tiger mauled two visitors and killed another at the San Francisco Zoo today. Tatiana -- the same Siberian who mauled its own trainer last year, ripping the flesh from her arm in front of spectators -- escaped from her pen at around 5 p.m. Then, the feline "went on to fatally maul a visitor at the Terrace Cafe, an outdoor restaurant in the zoo located near the tiger pen."

SFPD arrived at the zoo to find the critically endangered cat on top of one of her victims. According to CBS 5, "the tiger then started moving toward [the] group of approaching police officers, and they opened fire with handguns," killing Tatiana. As of now, it's not known just how the tiger managed to escape, well, captivity.

The zoo was evacuated after the attack was reported and will remain closed tomorrow (12/26) out of respect for the victims,"described by authorities as men in their 20s."

Oakland Mother Calls In Report of Infanticide

Yesterday, an Oakland woman called 911 late afternoon and informed the dispatcher that she had just drowned her 16-month-old son in their bathtub at their "nice, well-kept" Lake Merritt.apartment. According to the Chronicle, "when police and paramedics arrived at the family's apartment on the 1100 block of Third Avenue, they found the child dead, Holmgren said. The mother had injuries 'consistent with somebody who possibly tried to hurt themselves.'"

Yes, this is depressing as all hell, to say the least. Anyway, the mother was booked on suspicion of murder, and then treated at a local hospital for her self-inflicted wounds. It seems she wasn't stable enough to be taken to jail. Sigh.

Oakland: Early Morning Hit-And-Run Kills Woman

So far there is no description of the car or person that killed the woman.
