Interview With San Francisco Drag Legend Juanita MORE!

The Sword recently did this interview with SF drag queen Juanita MORE!, who's been DJing and hosting at parties (like Booty Call Wednesdays at Qbar in the Castro, Shits & Giggles in L.A., and Susanne Bartsch's Vandam in NYC) more than she's been performing as of late. Juanita talks about her first performance in San Francisco at Lily's (where Martuni's is now), about how she got her drag name, and about her drag idol, Divine.

-- Booty Call Wednesdays: Local living legend and drag artist Juanita MORE! shares the spotlight with her harem of followers, the More Boys as well as her fans, at this night of drunken debauchery and DJ dancing. DJ Missy Hot Pants and Juanita man the decks, so to speak, from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the Bar On Castro; free.

-- Shadow Circus Vaudeville Theatre: (In)famous night of underground "circus arts, burlesque, music, and puppetry" begins at 9 p.m. at Fat City; $10.

-- No official Halloween bash happening in the Castro, anywhere in SF. Hmm, this will be interesting/scary to watch come 10/31. [Chron, The Snitch]

-- Bad Boys of Runway: Project Runway enfant terribles Santino Rice and Jeffrey Sebelia help host and judge a fashion show along with the fascinating Denise Hale and the hilarious Marga Gomez. Juanita MORE! performs an opening number that’s not to be missed. (Like, seriously, don't.) The pre-show prefaces a screening of The Women (1939), with a VIP reception afterwards. Partial proceeds benefit CUAV (Community United Against Violence), so…yay! Show starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Castro Theatre, Castro & Market Streets; tickets are $15-$55.

-- Treat or Trick!: Ack, it's Halloween in July! SFShenanigans invite you to hand out candy at the Civic Center BART station tonight (at the platform closest to the Embarcadero.) Why? Just...because. So, dress up in your Halloween-ian finest! Bring fun-sized treats to pass out to weary BART riders! Spooktacular, drunk fun for all! 6 p.m.-8 p.m. at Civic Center BART, Market and Leavenworth; free.

We need to come up with a new word to describe the tasteless, fabulous, trashy, glamorous style of the Tenderloin. It's not just a slummy neighborhood; it's a slummy neighborhood with a can-do spirit and discerning palette. And one of its heroines is Tenderloinish drag star Juanita More, who, along with three hot Moreboys and the adorable Mike Albo, performed for an adoring crowd at The LGBT Center on Tuesday night. The evening, the last of the Queer Cultural Center's series of Trash Talkin' Tuesdays, started strong with Juanita's Moreboys reading harlequin-style smut, moved on to a dazzling song and dance by The Lady Herself, and then finished with a gut-busting performance/reading by Mike Albo from his new book, . By the end of the night, the audience could barely breathe though their laughter -- aren't you sorry you missed it? Lucky thing Mike's going to be performing again, tonight, at 7pm at A Clean Well-Lighted Place For Books. If you don't go, we can't be friends anymore.

What happens to weird frantic kids with ADD when they grow up? If they're lucky enough to become frisky homos, they get themselves a zine: Based in SF, NYC, and Montréal, Scum Bag Fag Mag is an attention-deficit-disordered collage of ephemera, errata, and plenty of dicks. Each issue has a theme, but continuity is minimal; the hasty-looking assemblage of clip art, stickers, snapshots, and hand-scrawled notes would be utterly non sequitur, if there was ever a sequitur in the first place.
