TV Alert: Jonny Moseley on Skating with the Stars

Tonight is the debut of Skating with the Stars, the triple-lutz spin-off of Dancing with the Stars - which you should care about (debatable) because it adds another familiar face to San Francisco's lineup of reality TV alumni: Bay Area local, Olympic gold medal skier and your boyfriend: Jonny Moseley. more ›

Ski Exhaustion

Ski Exhaustion

sfski.gif Man, we're running out of pictures and titles for the ongoing ski jump saga in Pac Heights. So the big day's tomorrow! Skip work and watch Jonny Moseley zip by multi-million dollar homes and their angry occupants! (If you go with a digital camera, send us your pics!) Today's latest outrage: the amps are coming back! Previously, the city entertainment committee (that's gotta be a fun committee to be on, like "social committee" for your dorm) denied Moseley a permit for loudspeakers and music, with a vote of 3-3. Based in part on the quieter noise levels, the transportation subcommittee approved the request to close off the streets for the jump. But -- oho! Much like with Superintendent Ackerman's pay raise, the entertainment committee then called a special meeting to reconsider the issue on a day where one more committee member was available. This time, the vote passed unanimously. Kick up that bass! Angry, angry! Pac Heights residents have hired an attorney, who tried to appeal the decision but found out there is no appeal right for a traffic commission decision. The attorney has found out that the company sponsoring the jump is not in compliance with corporate regulations in Nevada, and the company that was hired to clear out the snow is in default on a civil judgment against it. more ›

Ski's On

Ski's On

hill.jpg Bundle up, ski bunnies -- looks like Jonny Moseley's 30th birthday Pacific Heights ski jump party, sponsored by Icer, is back on! After a contentious meeting of the SF Interdepartmental Staff Committtee on Traffic and Transportation, in which two hours of public comment were heard, the ISCOTT panel voted 8-0 in favor of the event, since all the permits had been obtained and all safety concerns met. There'll be 50 cops, a fully-staffed fire truck with 1000 feet of hose, and an ambulance nearby at all times. The party takes place Thursday the 29th -- jump practice starts at 10:30 a.m., the actual jumping goes from noon to 3:30 p.m., and the awards ceremony is at 4. Street closures will go into effect Wednesday at noon and run until 8 p.m. on Thursday. Picture of the Fillmore Street hill from the 1890s off the Fillmore Museum website more ›

Ski Jump Redux

Ski Jump Redux

moseley2.jpg So now that Laurie Beijan had her dream wedding at Flood Mansion uninterrupted by cries of "Tubular!" from outside -- what's going on with Jonny Moseley's ski jump plans now? The good folks of Pacific Heights called a public meeting yesterday, where some interesting things were said. On the one hand, there was the angry resident at Fillmore and Green, who says, "For my 30th birthday, I went to Mexico, got drunk, and learned how to surf. It didn't affect anyone." (Huh. Mexico.) On the other, there was the passionate Iranian immigrant who asked, "I can't help but wonder if there is a starving child in Africa or Taiwan who will watch this event and be drawn to San Francisco to make it their home." (Taiwan is actually doing OK on food these days, but thanks for asking). However, everyone agreed that no matter what happened, San Francisco is at least better than the rest of the country: "It is events like this that distinguish us from Kansas City, which is flat in every way," said one person, who said we had to have the jump so our city wouldn't be "boring." And all agreed that no matter what happened, it was probably the city government's fault as well. "This company went through San Francisco and got the proper permits. We should be angry at The City, not this company," said another resident. Icer is hoping to have the ski jump in Pac Heights still, on Sept. 29. more ›

SFist Cares ... About the NABE

SFist Cares ... About the NABE

caresnabe.jpg Though they didn't get to host Jonny Moseley's birthday party, Potrero Hill still rocks and the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House (NABE) is doing good work. Right now, they're rocking the Neighbors for the NABE campaign. The Potrero Hill Neighborhood House (known as the NABE to community members) is a multi-purpose, multi-generational community center in continuous operation for nearly a century. It's mission is to serve those in need from the "cradle to the grave" with an emphasis on youth and education. People helping people right where they live is the idea and it's a great one that SFist can get behind. Their programs help people of all ages from Potrero Hill, Visitation Valley, the Mission and Bay View Hunters Point. Most of the programs help youth from low-income families. They're looking to raise a pretty modest $100,000 and so far are just under 50% of their goal. Please consider sending them some money to help them meet their goal and keep providing these valuable programs and services. With city budget cuts, some of them are in trouble. If you want something for your money, they're holding a raffle as well. more ›

Downhill Potrero!

Downhill Potrero!

35850700_dda26415d4_o.jpg Gav really just cannot make up his mind! After first saying he'd think about moving the Jonny Moseley birthday party ski jump to an eager and enthusiastic Potrero Hill, he's now all like, oh, it's gotta be on Fillmore after all. "I can't imagine a more idyllic location to showcase San Francisco." Aw, come on, Gav! We know you used to rep District 2 so you've got a soft spot, but the neighborhood at the other end of the 22 line is even hillier, has just as pretty views of a bridge (okay, it's the blue one and not the red one, but still) and the city skyline, has better parking, and -- actually seems enthusiastic about hosting! Compare this to the griping 94115ers, all like, "will this block our sewer drain" and "I have been planning my wedding ever since I was a little girl and when I light my unity candle I don't want people to be shouting out 'whooooooo!' outside." (FYI: if you're thinking about crashing Ms. Beijan's wedding to her pollster fiance this Saturday, she's getting bouncers.) Plus, the bars in Potrero are so much better than the bars in Cow Hollow for Jonny Moseley's 30th birthday party celebrations. Mike at Potrero Hill SF is starting a letter-writing campaign to Gavvy-Gav to get him to reconsider -- sign on! Picture from the Red Bull street luge competition in Potrero. more ›

Ski Jump Cancelled

Ski Jump Cancelled

moseley.jpg This just in! Newsom cancelled Jonny Moseley's 30th birthday party. Look at bummed-out Jonny over there -- doesn't he look kind of like Matty Gonzalez at that angle? Just a little bit? Newsom, always hedging his bets, said he was cancelling the event despite his own personal enthusiasm for it, mostly because of community concerns. The community (i.e., the monks, the Pacific Heights homeowners' association, and that extremely stressed-out Flood Mansion bride) are probably thrilled. All's not lost, though -- they could still maybe move it to Potrero! Picture from ABC 7 News more ›
