No passengers were injured, as NBC Bay Area reports, and the plane was able to taxi back to the gate it had just left so that everyone could get off and board a new flight.

Per KPIX, it remains unclear what kind of damage the plane sustained, if any, in the collision.

The airline issued a statement saying, "On Monday, November 6, JetBlue flight 534 was involved in an incident with a pushback tractor just after pushing back from the gate. All customers have deplaned and are being offered alternate flight options. No injuries were reported. Safety is JetBlue's first priority; we are reviewing this incident, and the aircraft has been taken out of service for inspection."

One passenger onboard a Dubai-bound flight tweeted that his flight was delayed due to the incident, and he posted video of the jet, post collision, with a mobile staircase pulled up to one of its doors.

Not everyday your plane✈️ is delayed to Dubai 🇦🇪 because the Jet Blue ✈️ across the tarmac gets hit by a service truck truck 🛻 🤯.

I’m glad that the Jet Blue plane had only just left the terminal. #flying #sfo #svin pic.twitter.com/6h5lb2DF4u
— Keith Koo - 柯凱澤 (@techmaven_keith) November 7, 2023

JetBlue Flight Bound for SFO Gets Diverted Due to Unruly, Drug-Snorting Passenger

A JetBlue flight from New York's JFK Airport to SFO had to be diverted to Minneapolis on Sunday when an unmasked, reportedly very smelly passenger onboard became unruly, harassing and annoying other passengers.

Business & Tech

JetBlue

SFO

Jay Barmann

A JetBlue flight from New York's JFK Airport to SFO had to be diverted to Minneapolis on Sunday when an unmasked, reportedly very smelly passenger onboard became unruly, harassing and annoying other passengers.

As ABC 7 reports, multiple passengers on the flight noted the man's weird outbursts and behavior, multiple trips to the lavatory, and the fact that he came onboard with a rather pungent odor.

Flight attendants worked to deal with the situation while in the air, relocating the unruly man when he became threatening to a female passenger sitting near him.
"While I was logging onto the airplane Wi-Fi, I saw the left foot stretch over to open the window, and then close it again," she told TODAY.

She sought a flight attendant, but when one approached "the feet discreetly retracted back into the abyss of row 6," Char says.

Lest you think this was a tall person seeking some relief, Char says that's not the case. NBC 4 reports that Char says the culprit was a woman "about 5 feet 3 inches tall — or shorter — and was seated in a row with extra leg room." SFist's email to JetBlue for comment on the situation had not been returned as of publication time.

If you needed a second party to tell you this is pretty yucky, I can refer you to the Chicago Tribune, which in a July column from "Answer Angel Ellen" wrote "Never take off your shoes on an airplane. Period." They didn't say anything about what extremity one should use to operate the window shade, but assuming they are in working condition, we suggest using the one located at the end of your arm.

Sacramento-Bound JetBlue Flight Hits Crazy Turbulence, Puts Two Dozen In Hospital

The plane experienced a sudden drop in altitude that sent people and objects flying.

SF News

air travel

airlines

JetBlue

Sacramento

Jay Barmann

A JetBlue flight bound for Sacramento from Boston encountered severe turbulence Thursday that sent objects, passengers, and flight attendants flying through the cabin, resulting in 24 people needing treatment for injuries. As the Sacramento Bee reports, the flight had to be diverted due to weather to Rapid City, South Dakota, where it landed at 7:30 p.m.

Per the Boston Globe, flight 429 took off from Logan Airport in Boston at 5:25 p.m., and all was fairly normal on the flight until a "sudden drop" occurred. Dr. Alan H. Lee, an orthopedic surgeon, wrote in to the paper to describe the experience, which involved the kind of crazy turbulence flight attendants warn you about when they tell you to fasten your seatbelt.

"I was working on my laptop when the plane suddenly dropped,” Lee wrote in an e-mail to the Globe. “I don’t know how far it dropped, but all I recall is my laptop almost hit the ceiling, several other passengers hit their heads, and a bunch of the overhead bins popped open."

According to Lee, the sudden drop in altitude was what caused all of the injuries.

“People were flying all over the place,” Lee said. “If people weren’t wearing their seatbelt, they hit their head on the ceiling.”

Another passenger on the flight, Rhonda Lynam told ABC News, "People were floating. All of a sudden, it was as if you're on an elevator, 50 stories high, and it goes out of control. Then you hit the bottom."

Yet another passenger, Eileen Lynch, told Reuters, "I felt like I was in the tower of terror."

Two of the 24 people injured were flight attendants, and Lee says he helped attend to one of the injured flight attendants after the crew issued a call for medical help. He told the Globe that three flight attendants standing in the rear galley of the plane all hit the ceiling, causing at least one hole in a ceiling tile. He described most of the injuries as "moderate lacerations and contusions."

The plane landed safely in South Dakota and passengers then had to wait up to six hours for a replacement plane to be flown in from California, which they then boarded and flew to Sacramento.

JetBlue issued an apology to Flight 429's passengers Friday morning, according to the Globe, saying that all passengers would receive "a service credit in the amount of the roundtrip fare paid (excluding taxes and fees) or $200 whichever is greater."

While this could spell sad news for fans of Virgin America and their guaranteed-to-be-pretty-comfortable and wi-fi-equipped planes, the company has reportedly put itself up for sale and now Bloomberg reports that they've received a pair of buyout offers so far. The Richard Branson-owned Virgin, based in Burlingame, launched nine years ago but only went public 18 months ago.

The move comes after reported earnings of $201.5 million in 2015, the largest in the company's history. And the takeover bids came mighty fast, less than a week after Virgin announced it might be courting a buyer.

As Consumerist notes, Virgin could very well still call the whole thing off. However "sources say that if talks continue an official sale could be announced as soon as next week."

JetBlue, at the moment, seems like the more likely buyer, per Bloomberg, allowing the company to immediately expand its presence in, and routes out of, San Francisco and LA.

However a much bigger airline, like Delta, could step into the mix before all is said and done as well. Delta had mulled a merger with sister airline Virgin Atlantic back in 2012.

So far, no one is commenting on this pending negotiation, or which suitor Virgin might be entering talks with first.

A JetBlue airplane made a "hard landing" at Sacramento International Airpot this afternoon around 1 p.m. after "blowing two tires, sparking a small fire and causing minor injuries."

According to reports, "A passenger who was on the plane told KOVR-TV that when it landed he heard a bang and then the plane stopped suddenly."

"We were then told to start evacuating very abruptly, you know 'Get out! Get out! Get out!'" said "Elvis," the passenger in question. "I looked back under the plane, and it was on fire, and all four tires were out."

During a media conference at SFO last week, Gavin Newsom was quoted as saying:

"It's a wonderful day when we can welcome back an old friend -- in this case, Southwest Airlines -- to San Francisco."

Wait -- he's Southwest's "friend?" Uh oh. How long until Mayor Gav.'s heartfelt announcment that he's been flying business class on Virgin or JetBlue, but paying out some contractual obligation to Southwest all the same?

In any case, SFO will have eight daily flights to San Diego, seven to Vegas, and three to Chicago Midway. As a related promotion, one-way fares start at $39 for all three northern Californian airports (SFO, Oakland, San Jose).

GAHHH!
After the lukewarm-to-good news of JetBlue flying out of SFO, we're greeted with some bad news: Frontier Airlines is vacating the premises--no more "commuter flights" to and from LAX.

It's a shame, really. This airline, from the four times we flew this route, appeared to be have everything that JetBlue is known for, minus the history of extended runway visits: Frontier is low-cost, friendly, and, yeah, has that 20-odd channels of DirectTV thing going for it. Plus each plane has a really cute animal on its tail.

Anyways, bad news for those of us for whom visiting L.A. is a semi-frequent and necessary evil. Hmmmm . . . what's that? Southwest and Virgin are coming soon? At least there'll be a few options besides the "majors."

Nice Leather Seats For Your 11-Hour Wait

Update: So hey!
---
Those of you who want to watch DirecTV on your flights to the East Coast but who can't bear the trip to either the Oakland or San Jose airports are in luck! Fancy-pants low-cost airline JetBlue launches its much-anticipated SFO service today! Man, we love watching Bravo "Showbiz Moms and Dads" marathons when we're flying across the country.

The service starts off with four nonstop flights to New York's JFK airport, and one to Boston (one-ways starting at $164 for both cities) -- and starting July 27, we'll get direct service to Salt Lake City next (one-way $ 89). (Is there an underserved SFO-Utah market out there? Probably so!)

Let's hope JetBlue's ready for SFO -- their experience with those 11-hour delays back in February should be a good warmup for those mysterious "low cloud cover" days that plague the on-time statistics on the SFO runways.

JetBlue Coming to SFO

As anyone who has done a lot of traveling knows, there are two types of airlines-- there is JetBlue and there is everybody else. Here, you could get them at Oakland but not at SFO. But not for any longer-- JetBlue will now be serving SFO. And we are stoked.

Starting May 3rd, Jet Blue will offer direct flights to JFK and Logan Airport at Boston. Tickets will start at $99 one-way but will eventually go up to around $159 to $399 later on. Flights to other airports will be added on later.

SFO has been trying to get JetBlue for years, especially in light of Southwestern pulling up stakes and going to Oakland. Other airlines fly to the East Coast from SFO, but this is the only discount airline. As for Oakland, JetBlue is planning on lowering the number of flights out the airport, but will still have flights running out of the airport.

Not everyone is excited, however. A few years back, Beyond Chron argued that "socially conscious" consumers shouldn't fly the Blue because it's non-Union and outsources stuff elsewhere. The term, in fact they use, is the "Walmartization" of the airline industry. To which we say, what part of leather seats and DirectTV do they not understand?
