The incident, as KPIX reports, happened around 2:30 p.m., and the children's father jumped into the water in an attempt to rescue them.

The father, identified as 40-year-old Michael Wyman of Petaluma, apparently reached one of the children and was trying to pull the child to shore when they were both swept out further by a rip current.

"They were both his kids — a 4-year-old and a 6-year-old — apparently he grabbed onto the 4-year-old and was trying to pull him in and apparently got swept out further," says Sonoma County Sheriff Lt. Michael Raasch, speaking to KPIX.

The mother, who was also present at the scene, was reportedly knocked down by a wave but managed to get herself out of the water alive, as KTVU reports, via Monte Rio Fire Protection District Chief Steve Baxman.

Both children were swept out to sea and have not been found despite extensive searching. Bystanders on the beach reportedly pulled the father into shore and attempts were made to perform CPR. But the father was pronounced dead at the beach at 3:05 p.m., per KTVU.

A High Surf Advisory remains in effect for Bay Area beaches through Tuesday, with waves as high as 24 feet.

"The waves are very treacherous, even very strong swimmers would have trouble getting out of the water," said Raasch to KPIX.

The search for the children continued Monday morning.

Update: The children were presumed dead and the search called off as of Monday afternoon.

A tragic story in Sonoma County. Well, the case remains open, however there was a person of interest named Joseph Burgess who was suspected in the case by Sonoma County sheriffs because of the similarity of a 1972 murder in British Columbia in which Burgess was also a suspect.

Anyhow, the man had guns, and when closed in upon this week by authorities in New Mexico he apparently started shooting, and ended up shot dead himself. The father of one of the victims, Lindsay Cutshall, takes the Christian view of all this, naturally, and says he hopes that Burgess will face justice in the afterlife.

Jenner Headlands Almost Preserved

The Jenner Headlands -- that gorgeous, relatively untouched stretch of coastal land a few hours north of San Francisco, where "<a href="http://...

SF News

Environment

headlands

jenner

preservation

Brock Keeling

The Jenner Headlands -- that gorgeous, relatively untouched stretch of coastal land a few hours north of San Francisco, where "the Russian River meets a Pacific Ocean" -- is a breath away from being preserved in what's being called "the largest conservation acquisition in Sonoma County history."

Six agencies and nonprofits have come together to purchase the 5,630-acre headlands property for (a cheap!) $36 million. The Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District will put up a third of the money, with the rest of it coming from Sonoma Land Trust, the state Coastal Conservancy, the California Conservation Board, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

If you want to take a jaunt up to the Jenner Headlands this weekend, which we highly recommend, even over the more popular Russian River, you can check out hotel and cottage prices, here.
