District 6 Supervisor Jane Kim spent last Wednesday night in a homeless shelter, on an evening when she was technically serving as Acting Mayor while Ed Lee was out of state. Kim has been interested in improving the shelter system since beginning her term last year, and Wednesday found her experiencing it first hand, lining up for a shelter-bed reservation, getting assigned one, and checking in 7 p.m. for a 12-hour stay at the Next Door Shelter at Polk and Geary.
Jane Kim Spends Night In Tenderloin Homeless Shelter
Jane Kim Visits Occupy SF, Protesters Plan Midday Rally at City Hall
Although vague twitter rumors seemed to suggest a tense mood at the Occupy SF encampment last night, the only confrontation on Justin Herman Plaza was D6 supe Jane Kim sticking it to Mayor Ed Lee via text message. Kim, who showed up last night to ask how she could support the movement, will also be using her time during today's Board of Supervisors meeting to ask the Mayor how the city plans to deal with public health concerns and free speech issues associated with the ongoing protest. Naturally, Occupy SF demonstrators have some interest in that conversation and the group plans to show up on the steps of City Hall today at 1:30 p.m. to make their presence felt.
And Now, Here's Jane Kim Getting Tossed Into a Pool
We mentioned the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation's Pool Toss fundraiser earlier this week and now, for your afternoon schadenfreude, the aftermath of the sopping event has been posted to Facebook because that's where all the pictures of mildly embarrassing activities end up these days. Sure, it's just a blurry action shot and we're not sold on the pink headband/Juicy tracksuit look, but we have to give her points for form. +1 Jane Kim.
Watch Burning Man 2011 Gala Live
Too poor or too interesting to attend this year's Burning Man festivities in the Black Rock Desert? Have no worries. Here's some live streaming to whet your appetite. Arid-looking, yes? Unlike the days of yore, however, this year's Burning Man has plenty of luxe style and artisanal comforts for "[p]eople [who] have less and less time to be radically self-reliant."
S.F. Supervisors Chiu, Kim, and Mar Heading to Burning Man
Supervisors David Chiu and Jane Kim will voyage to the annual art and drug festival in the Nevada desert known as Burning Man. For whatever reason, they plan on spending only 24 hours there, flying there in a private plane. "For several years, I've wanted to visit the Black Rock Desert to learn about how Burning Man is building 21st Century community, creating art, and fostering sustainability," Chiu told the SF Bay Guardian's Steve Jones.
Constituent Asks Jane Kim Why She's Still Single
During a campaign walk-around in the Mission today with mayoral hopeful Ed Lee, stunningly beautiful District 6 Supervisor Jane Kim faced some tough questioning from a constituent. As Mike Aldax reports in the Ex, "While the mayor and supervisor talked to residents and merchants on 16th Street, a Chinese shopkeeper at Sam’s Shoe Services asked Supervisor Kim why she isn’t married."
Jane Kim, Supervisors, Quietly Trying to Rewrite Care Not Cash
A ballot measure spearheaded by District 6's Jane Kim was "quietly" added to the November ballot yesterday, setting the stage for the first revision -- and arguable dismantling -- of Gavin Newsom's controversial Care Not Cash program. The measure would make it easier once again for homeless individuals to collect their full general assistance stipend from the City by redefining the terms of what constitutes housing, and stripping homeless shelters from the roster of available benefits.
Late-Breaking Jane Kim News: Stylish D6 Supe Hitched a Ride to Work on Bike to Work Day
San Francisco's best dressed Supervisor has never experienced the joy of taking off her training wheels, apparently. As she told a crowd at City Hall yesterday, "I grew up a city girl and I never learned how to ride a bike." There's a statement in there somewhere about building bike-friendly cities by starting with the kids, but that's for someone else to make. For our purposes we're solely concerned with this stylish cycling getup the D6 supervisor rolled out for her ride down the green carpet. (Because bike lanes are green, get it? You get it.)
New Eagle Tavern Closing Date: End Of May, Possibly Later This Year
At what we thought would be the Eagle Taven's final beer bust yesterday, we were surprised to hear that, instead of 4/29, the SoMa leather bar's new tentative closing date would be at the end of May. Possibly later this year. An Eagle "official" announced the news on the patio stage, later confirmed to us by a frisky bartender. What does that mean for you? Well, you now have a few more beer busts to savor before the local institution closes its doors forever. (Eagle beer busts include, among other things, free BBQ, bottomless beer for a scant $10, the occasional public oral sex act, a sea of super friendly men, and all the second-hand marijuana smoke you can handle. Highly recommended.)
S.F. Approves Twitter Tax Break
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors overwhelmingly approved the controversial Twitter tax break today, a move that (hopefully) will keep the microblogging service from fleeing the city. "The measure passed by the Board of Supervisors 8-3 on Tuesday exempts the microblogging service from paying payroll tax on new hires if it moves to the city's neglected Mid-Market area," reports Associated Press. "The exemption applies to any business in the blighted neighborhood, but city officials call Twitter the big fish that could spur economic growth." Twitter is now expected to sign a six-year lease in the neighborhood.
Monday Morning Roundup
Jane Kim and the City Operations & Neighborhood Services Committee are having a hearing today to discuss the bedbug problem. Which, yes: bedbugs are still a problem, apparently. It's Agenda Item 2. (PDF warning) [SFBOS]
Meanwhile, during the same meeting, Avalos will hear about switchbacks along the 14-Mission line and Scott Wiener will get the low down on J-Church unreliability. (Agenda Items 5, 6) [SFBOS]
Speaking of trains: the overhead power lines along Market Street are having some work done this week, so after 8 p.m. F-Market trains will be replaced by buses until at least Thursday. [Market Street Railway]
Wednesday: S.F. Board of Supervisors Host Fundraiser for Japan
Have you ever wanted to have an intimate dinner with Supervisor Jane Kim? Ride your bike alongside Supervisor David Chiu? Sup with Supervisor David Campos at Moki's? Well then, head over to to Som on Wednesday (tomorrow!) for the S.F. Board of Supervisors Fundraiser for Japan. In addition to wonks galore, there will be a presentation from the Consulate General of Japan, DJ tunes by local resident B-Haul (Tasty), lots of booze, and a silent auction. Said auction, featuring goodies offered by your Supervisors, will include the following items:
Supe. Jane Kim to Make South Park Appearance Tonight
We've come to admire District 6 Supervisor Jane Kim. Mainly for lightning rod reasons - as of late, she has certain wonk sects in a tizzy over only God knows what; being an attractive woman, presumably - she's garnered a spark that could prove combustible. Good or bad, only time will tell. Whatever. That said, Kim will make a public appearance tonight at 6 pm The Butler & the Chef (155 South Park) in South Park, hosted by the South Park Improvement Association. (Word to the wise: If you're a reporter, you'd better hide your spiral notepads and laptops.)
Here We Go: District 6 Supervisor Jane Kim Refuses to Recite Pledge of Allegiance
Reinforcing the public's perception of the Board of Supervisors as a group of whiny liberal high school kids who go to battle, and occasionally try to one-up each other with how forward-thinking and/or blasphemous they can be, newly elected District 6 rep Jane Kim has taken a stand against reciting the Pledge of Allegiance that is sure to garner her some nice, negative national press attention. Way to fill Daly's shoes, girl and take on your first important issue as Supervisor -- that is, besides Tenderloin bedbugs.
Concessions Issued in Supervisor Races, Wiener and Kim Claim Victory
Even though the SF Department of Elections refuses to go beyond the *preliminary* stages of ranked choice vote tallying, Debra Walker and Rafael Mandelman put us out of our misery yesterday by issuing concessions, allowing Jane Kim and Scott Wiener to claim their victories in Districts 6 and 8 respectively.
Preliminary Supervisor Election Results, Post-Ranked-Choice Runoffs: Kim, Wiener Still On Top, District 10 Still Damn Close
55% of you went out to vote last Tuesday, and they're still trying to figure out who won the Board of Supervisors races (good luck sweatin' this out, District 10!). The first preliminary round of "instant runoff" tabulations took place on Friday, with another happening tomorrow.
Scott Wiener, Jane Kim Take Early Leads in Supervisor Races
With the whole ranked choice thing, and the relatively slim majorities being held, it's probably too early to call most of the Supervisor races. The Appeal has published the percentages of votes tallied for each candidate, with most votes already counted. But when you're talking about a difference of a couple of hundred votes (as is the case with Jane Kim and Debra Walker in District 6), with absentee ballots still to be counted, not to mention the ranked-choice complication, we're not going to get ahead of ourselves just yet.
Daly Throws His Weight Behind Longtime Aide James Keys
In the hotly contest race for District 6 supervisor, Chris Daly has finally given his formal endorsement to longtime aide and former election campaign manager James Keys. "While there are many good candidates in this race," Daly tells Fog City Journal, "James Keys best represents what I’m about — social and economic justice for our City’s most vulnerable." Does that mean he'll also take up the torch of saying "fuck" a lot during Supervisors' meetings?
SFist Blotter
Lotta activity on Capp Street lately: not only was a man caught beating and trying to strangle a woman around 15th and Capp, but a few weeks earlier, the SFFD found a pot farm on fire two blocks down, in the same building as the Space 180/Locus Arts gallery (where Kim-Shree Maufas and Jane Kim had their school board election party.)
Update on Josh Wolf
An event will be held today in yet another effort to Free Josh Wolf. Wolf, of course, is the video blogger/journalist being held in jail for contempt of court for not releasing the hottest video out there that doesn't involve a celebrity having sex with somebody else. And thank God for that but we'd love to see the alleged video of Britney and K-Fed playing chess.
Everything Else Results
SFist Jon's having computer woes, so we're covering all the rest of the races here too.
Bassists For Measure O
Maybe Kim Deal'll show up too -- Bassists Krist Novoselic and Matt Gonzalez (pictured to your left, shredding at a Jane Kim fundraiser) are hosting a fundraising event from 5:30-8 p.m. tonight to support Oakland's Measure O, which would institute ranked-choice voting in Oakland just like they've got in San Fran.
Bay Area Blog Pulse
Sasha dishes the news about TechConnect -- RFP deadline went by without so much as a press conference. Big news is that Google and Earthlink have teamed up, and that Houston's recent WiFi RFP was made public (The City threatened to sue when theirs was leaked). Francisco De Costa claims a victory after the public forum on Bayview redevelopment. San Jose Inside's Single Gal takes a look at the six folks who want Ron Gonzalez' job. And Pepper offers some analysis on the reports that Herr Governator's rising in the polls again.
No-Host Bar
on hold -- because the invited city officials are becoming more and more uncomfortable with the fact that Ford voted yes on the Marriage Protection Act of 2004 (defining marriage as a heterosexual institution; Ford was one of only 36 Democrats who voted for it).
Gavin "he's got game" Newsom, the original party co-chair, is now all like, "uhhh.... err.... I didn't know he'd voted yes on the bill when I agreed to host." Kamala Harris has suddenly discovered that her schedule is kind of booked as well (though it looks like Willie Brown's still game -- that guy does love a party, it's true). And Bubble Lounge manager Jane Kim (probably not the same Jane Kim that ran for school board -- but hey, you never know) is now like, I'm not sure if I'd rent the space to someone against gay marriage.
Ford's all like, I don't care (reg. req.). He's never met Gavin Newsom, says plenty of people don't mind his opposition to gay marriage, and he's raising lots of money from everyone (else) anyways. "He's not an (eligible) voter for me. Gavin Newsom has his politics in San Francisco and I have mine in Tennessee." He's rated a "moderate liberal," despite voting yes on school prayer, yes on abortion restrictions, and yes on the war.
SFist Interview: Jane Kim
The next time you complain about how busy you are, take a look at Jane Kim's packed schedule. Between her job as youth program director at the Chinatown Community Development Center, her position as co-director and co-founder of Locus Arts, and her many volunteer and philanthropic activities, she has somehow found the time to run for the San Francisco District School Board.
