The battle over Gavin's new staffing plans went up a notch in lieu of a report by Board of Supervisors Budget Analyst Harvey Rose that will be released today saying that Gavin is spending $959,903 in raises and taking that money out of departmental funds. The report was done at the behest of Jake McGoldrick after the first initial reports came out about Gavin going around City Hall and making it rain.

Well, at least he lives in the Richmond, right? (Some) affordable housing advocates and ethicists are shaking their heads over District 1 Supervisor Jake McGoldrick's poor party timing this week.
When he's not busy getting impeached or whatever for indecent exposure, Aaron Peskin's trying to fix Muni. And SPUR, the urban-planny folks, are grateful: they're encouraging everyone to give Aaron's amendments a thumbs-up. You can read it in loathsome .doc format here, or as a Google Document here -- but honestly, you don't want to read either, since it's about a billion pages long.
Nothing too new to report on the Ed Jew got arrested front this morning, but the Chron did survey all the other Board of Supervisor members for their reactions. Let's go in order!
What with all the budget debate going on, the issue of golf courses has been in the news a lot. Mainly that they cost a lot of money but don't take in a lot of money. Hello, budget deficit. So now the question on everyone's minds is what-to-do, what-to-do.
On Tuesday, the 49ers unveiled their shiny new plan for a stadium in Santa Clara. The whole thing will cost about $854 million with Santa Clara pitching in what is said to be $160 million, although Santa Clara still might have to throw down for another $20 million to move the substation that's on the grounds of the proposed stadium. The rest of the money, $694 million, will come partially from the Niners ($363.3 million) and partially through the usual assortment of things, mainly naming rights and fan gouging.
In today's "No Duh" study of the day, the San Francisco County Transportation Authority determined that-- are you sitting down for this?-- a rapid bus system and better public transportation options will increase ridership along Geary Street. The study also determined that puppies are cute, Brooke on "the Real World" is crazy, and the Giants need more offense.
The latest issue concerning the DPT is sidewalk parking and what to do about it. The issue raised it's head a few months ago when Jake McG asked for a crackdown and now, the DPT has some ideas on what to do about the issue. Mainly shrug their shoulders and tell everyone "whatta you gonna do about it?"
A hearing was held with the Board of Supervisors’ Land Use and Economic Development Committee yesterday to discuss the whole Healthy Saturday's issue. On one side, biker enthusiasts and anti-carites. On the other side: advocates for the disabled and various friends of DeDe (FODs). At the end of the debate, Supervisor, main sponsor, and recall victim Jake McG, decided to postpone the vote until next week. The reason for a delay in the decision was because Gavin wanted to hold a sit-down with people on both sides to hammer out some sort of compromise.
In light of the new study coming out saying that the closure of JFK boulevard on Sundays doesn't hurt attendance at any of the fancy new museums in Golden Gate Park, supporters of the Healthy Saturdays initiative gathered to renew the fight. In a press conference yesterday, Jake McG said he was going to reintroduce the measure to close the park on Saturday for a six month trial run.
-More officers are sent to the Ocean View neighborhood after two men were shot within an hour of each other last night.
And so the Board of Supervisors finally sat down and weighed in on the great question of WiFi and decided....nothing. Actually, they decided to wait until they come up with a different proposal, one for a city-owned WiFi system. When that gets put together, they'll put both together, debate them, and then select one or the other. The vote came down to 6-5 with Supervisor Michaela Alioto-Pier actually siding with the progressives on this one as she said she thinks it would be better for everyone if both were debated at the same time so nobody could complain about how this thing got debated.
As we go almost a week into As the Gav Turns, a few more stories are leaking out about what's been going on with the Mayor lately. But first, some news, mainly that he is most definitely not going to resign. In fact, he and Jake McG, who earlier called on Gavin to resign, had a meeting yesterday about that very subject that didn't go very well. Gavin played the "why is everybody always picking on me" card to which Jake responded, "bitch, please." Earlier, Jake had called on Gavin to resign, saying that Gavin did not have the "moral fiber" to be Mayor and we seem to recall that not being on the city charter. And if Gavin doesn't have moral turpitude than what could one say about Willie? The other news is that there's been issues as to who exactly is paying Alex Tourk's compensation and Gavin's people are trying to figure out a legal way around paying Alex Tourk as people have brought up the legal issues with how it was initially set up.
We used to live in the Cole Valley (well, technically it was Upper Haight but nobody likes to admit they live in Upper Haight) and during the weekend’s almost every drive way had a car parked in it, especially at night when everyone went out and about in the neighborhood. One night, around midnight, one of our crazy neighbors came home only to find a car parked in her driveway, blocking her from parking her own car in her very own garage. So she started screaming at the top of her lungs about how she can't get into her garage and how she's going to kill whomever parked the car in her driveway and how they spend all this money to have a garage and how they’re tired and not healthy and how they were going to get the car towed unless somebody came down. After about five minutes of screaming, somebody sheepishly went down to move their car. Crisis averted.
