According to the Des Moines Register, an Iowa gay asked the former U.S. House Speaker how he would support gay Americans if elected.

“I asked him if he’s elected, how does he plan to engage gay Americans. How are we to support him? And he told me to support Obama,” Scott Arnold, an associate professor at William Penn University told the publication, adding: “When you ask somebody a question and you expect them to support all Americans and have everyone’s general interest...It’s a little bit frustrating and disheartening when you’re told to support the other side. That he doesn’t’ need your support.”

This represents the latest devolution of Gingrich's campaign, one that he initially promised would maintain a "positive" tone. "Gingrich's rhetoric and tone have grown increasingly angry in repeated broadsides against Romney and his other rivals," notes HuffPo. "Each time that Gingrich complained about the ads being run by his opponents' campaigns or by the independent electoral groups called super PACs supporting them, his fury seemed to grow."

Gingrich, if you recall, has a gay half-sister, Candace Gingrich, who once served as the Human Rights Campaign's National Coming Out Project Spokesperson.

Avowed racist Rep. Michele Bachmann, the GOP presidential candidate, signed an anti-Christian conservative pledge last week stating that among other things, according to the Telegraph, "African American children were more likely to grow up in stable families during the era of slavery than under President Barack Obama." One of countless Americans still furious over having a black man in the Oval Office, Bachmann, along with fellow candidate Rick Santorum, approved and agreed with the following statement.

"Slavery had a disastrous impact on African-American families, yet sadly a child born into slavery in 1860 was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African-American baby born after the election of the USA's first African-American President," the opening statement reads. It just gets more horrific from there.

In lieu of creating yet another moment of bad (and, far worse, ineffective) satire in response, some moderates fought back. Cheryl Contee, blogger for Jack and Jill Politics, responded, "Given that families were broken up regularly for sales during slavery and that rape by masters was pretty common, this could not be more offensive."

The pledge, created by anti-civil rights groups The Family Leader, was then given to The White House.

In addition to yet again evoking slavery in an effort to sway uneducated voters, the confused GOP candidate and her husband, Marcus, also made headlines by using taxpayer dollars to run a clinic that "suggested in counseling that prayer could help switch a patient’s sexual orientation." According to the LA Times, the noted anti-gay candidate and her partner used federal and state funds to "[endorse and practice] reparative therapy aimed at changing a gay person’s sexual orientation, despite the fact that such 'therapy' is widely discredited by the scientific and medical communities."

Celebration in the Castro for Iowa Same-Sex Marriage Ruling

Sorry for the late notice, but we just got word: \head over to the Castro between 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. to celebrate Iowa'...

SF News

castro

SF Events

gay marriage

Iowa

party

Brock Keeling

Sorry for the late notice, but we just got word: \head over to the Castro between 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. to celebrate Iowa's ruling in favor of equal rights. The official Celebration Rally in SF for Iowa Same-Sex Marriage Ruling say it'll be a seriously fun celebration honoring the Midwest. Rumor has it popcorn will be served -- which, we assume, is all they eat in Iowa -- so this could be the one day of the year many of you will get to digest carbohydrates. (Ack!)

We will distribute popcorn - that Iowa staple food - in their honor and update people on plans for the day of decision from our own State Supreme Court. (Tentative appearance from a few country western dancers from Sundance - yippee!) Let's send the message to the California Supreme Court that marriage equality is popping up all over. The value of fairness and equality for all has resonated today in America’s Heartland let us hope the ripple of hope and tradition of extending civil rights to all minorities continues back to the Golden State.

Drink responsibly. Ish.

Iowa became the third state in the U.S. (and the first in the heartland!) to legalize gay marriage today. The Iowa State Supreme Court "upheld a lower court's ruling that found a state law restricting marriage to between a man and woman only violated Iowa's constitution." According to Richard Socarides, former adviser on gay rights during the Clinton administration, "It's a big win because, coming from Iowa, it represents the mainstreaming of gay marriage. And it shows that despite attempts stop gay marriage through right-wing ballot initiatives, like in California, the courts will continue to support the case for equal rights for gays." LGBT community will have to wait a few weeks before they can obtain marriage licenses. Way to go, Iowa. Hopefully, California will follow your lead (did we really just say that?) when the State Supreme Court makes its final ruling on Prop. 8.

Obamamania Infects San Francisco, No Cure in Sight.

Barack's new SF HQ opens

misc

America

Barack Obama

Craig Newmark

District

District Attorney

District Attorney Kamala Harris

Iowa

Jim Herd

Kamala Harris

Market Street

Obama

Obamamania

oprah

San Franciscan

San Francisco

Jim

First Oprah, now Craig. We hit the recommend button on that one! You may recall that Newsom has been pestering Leal to resign, either because she wasn't considered a sufficiently loyal Newsomite (she ran against him for mayor), or because she was pushing for public power. You know, if Newsom actually is cleaning house for his second term, the PUC is not the place where we figured he'd start.
Essentially they'll put a measure stretching out term limits so all the legislators now don't have to be worried about being termed out. Or those that are about to be termed out can get all of their reelection cards in order and run this year. There's enough time between February and June to get something together for the primaries.

The deal is so sweet that Arnie is throwing in his redistricting measure for good measure and everybody is so gaga over the whole term limit thing that they don't even care what Arnie's up to. Hell, Arnie could wear make it so that he's allowed to wear his costume from Conan the Barbarian and be served by scantily clad women wearing sheet metal and the legislature wouldn't care.

And speaking of Arnie, there's an extra benefit to him. Rumors are flying that the reason he's in favor of it is because that term limit thing applies to him too. It's entirely possible he could use these laws to his benefit and run for a third time. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

You want to know what's scary about all of this? According to MSNBC this morning, if California moves their primary to February, Iowa and New Hampshire might move theirs up to late 2007. Which means we'll have to move our primary up to get closer to Iowa and New Hampshire which will make them move theirs up earlier and the next thing you know, we'll be voting all of this in June.
You could also make the argument that since we're more representative of America than, say, Iowa or New Hampshire, two states that pretty much describe the phrase "white bred," it'll be more representative of what the country really wants.

The reasons against is that we're the 800 pound gorilla and our presence early in the primaries' could throw the whole darn thing out of whack. Something that could actually be a good thing. Last time we moved up our primary date, a bunch of smaller states moved there's up to get in ahead of us. Already, the DNC is threatening to take away some of our delegates to the convention (oh noes!) if we do the move because they're afraid of the effect we'll have. Another reason against it is that it'll cost us much more money to prepare for another election. The plan is to have the primary in February but still have a bunch of legislative elections in June. That's three elections in a year, four for those places that don't have ranked voting and have to have run-offs. Ironically, this is something that legislators like because they're hoping to also put a rule changing term-limit rules on the February ballot so they can have enough time to put them up for reelection by June.

Which is why legislators like the idea. And Arnie, who likes the idea too, is thinking it might be a good time to throw a redistricting measure up there too because all the legislators are so into the idea of changing term limits that they'll support anything. It's a win-win!

American Football Spectacular: Bowl-tastic

t's time for American Football Spectacular's bowl preview! LIBERTY BOWL
Fresno St vs. Tulsa
Saturday, December 31, 2005

Fresno has been all slumpy since nearly upsetting USC in a monstrous toe-to-toe battle. Tulsa used to be in the same conference with Fresno and is on the way up, winning their first league championship in 20 years by taking Conference USA from UTEP.

Tulsa's mascot is the "Golden Hurricane." That's considerable more serious than a simple Golden Shower. Who OKs these mascot names? It just makes us gloomy to ponder.

I love Tulsa's tight end Garrett Mills, he's like 80% of their offense. (And he just broke the NCAA 1-A record for TE receiving yards in a single season.)

Sponsorship: The Liberty Bowl is sponsored by AutoZone. Their company name might also be used for a 1970s paperback sci-fi novel. "To win your freedom, you must pass through the AutoZone!"

HOUSTON BOWL
(14) TCU vs. Iowa St.
Saturday, December 31, 2005

TCU would probably be playing after New Year's Day if they hadn't lost to an unranked SMU. Doh. So here they are in the Houston Bowl, which is Texas. And Texas means fightin'!

This game will be held in the NFL Houston Texans' Reliant Stadium. No one would be shocked if this bowl game outdrew a Texans game.

MC Fried Chicken's take: TCU should win. They have a hot QB and should take out Iowa St.

Sponsorship: EV1.net. A who-da-what? Upon further review, EV1.net is an ISP from Houston. Perhaps you're even using them right now.

Well, it's come to this. Remember the brouhaha over docking the USS Iowa at Fisherman's Wharf? It was DiFi's idea to send $3 million worth of pork our way. Nevermind pacifist sentiment, the Navy's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy and the fact that floating military museums are a money-losing proposition -- everybody and their mother got on the Supes' case about turning the offer down.

So of course The Daily Show sent out cub fake-reporter Nate Corddry [Torrent] (Rob's younger brother, apparently) to do interviews with Tom Ammiano and Chris Daly and to play up every gay stereotype he could, including wearing a sailor suit to Trannyshack ("after six Cosmos and two grams of something..."), and the report played tonight before the intellectually stimulating interview with Cameron Diaz.

Don't get us wrong, we love The Daily Show, but we left disappointed. They cut Chris Daly out of the bit, meaning that we didn't even get to play SFist Rita's drinking game. At least Nate got a nice dry hump out of the deal. And Tommiano certainly held his own, not getting punk'd and dishing out The Funny (lord, we love that guy). But we expected better from fellow commie pinko queers.

Political Junkie: The Daily Daly Show

<img alt="DailyShow_Indecision2004.jpg" src="http://www.sfist.com/attachments/sfist_rita/DailyShow_Indecision2004-thu...

SF News

Chris Daly

Daily Show

Daly

drinking

fun

gay

Iowa

Law

OMG

PoliticalJunkie

SF Politics

The Daily Show

The Examiner

Tom Ammiano

Tom DeLay

rita

This is going to be a great day. First Tom DeLay gets indicted, and now this! The Examiner reports that Tom Ammiano and Chris Daly !!!!! OMG! OMFG!!! OMFG!!

You know in those segments how you always wonder, "who the heck would agree to be interviewed by Samantha Bee, anyways?" Well, now you know! Ammiano, a former stand-up comic, gamely answered all their questions about the gay-rights controversy over the USS Iowa and said he tried to be funny but that "they have total control over the camera." Ammiano also told his aides, "I think we're going to get punked." Daly, no doubt hardened by years and years of Matier and Ross mockery (and his own special archives category on SFist.com!), said, "I told them I didn't care if they made fun of me, as long as it's funny." (Oh man, Daly must hate us.)

No word on when the segment's going to air -- but it's never too early to prepare! Your official SFist Daily Daly Show drinking game after the jump! (Sorry, Tom, it's Chris only.)
just got interviewed by the Daily Show
